This show is Star-Wars Prequel level bad. Just like those movies did, it is retroactively making me love the first series less. Skip it. Like for real, and I'm not talking about the 90s toy Skip-It. Don't watch this show.
I must preface that this review is heavily colored by my love of the original Basilisk anime, which in my not particularly humble opinion was a masterpiece. I cannot help but to compare them, but to be honest that is fine. Nobody who didn't watch Basilisk OG is going to sit through this travesty anyway. This will contain some very mild spoilers, but it doesn't
matter because if you watch this and love the original it will just make you sad. Don't make the same mistake I did.
Basilisk OG had a tight, cohesive story that was set up in the first 5 minutes of the first episode could be summed up in a sentence: a macabre battle royale between two rival clans of ninjas with bizarre abilities. As of 4 episodes into Basilisk 2018 I have no idea what is going on, who anyone is, or why the hell I should care. The story is the worst aspect of this disaster of a show, and that is saying something. If I could give it a 0 I would, because as of yet there does not appear to be a story.
Art: Fine, I guess. That is the best I can say. The original had a distinct style and tone, and a dark and oppressive color palate that suited the bleak story. This one is bland and uninspired, with nothing at all of interest. Nothing stands out as being either good or bad. It just is. It's like a bowl of oatmeal. And also Basilisk 2018, don't think you can hide lazy or non-existent animation behind a bunch of muddy rain effects and think we won't notice. Not today Miss Thing.
Sound: Maybe the best part, although that isn't saying anything. The voice acting is good and the soundtrack is inoffensive. The best thing about the show is the sound, and the only good thing I can say about it is that it is not actively bad and some of the actors are talented. Yikes.
Characters: Offensively, aggressively, devastatingly bad. This was the best part of Basilisk OG. Some of the characters you hated, some of the characters you loved, but regardless of how you felt about a particular member of the cast the show gave you strong characters who knew who they were and what they wanted. I still remember their names, motivations, relationships, and abilities all these years later. By contrast, I watched an episode of this show five minutes ago and could not tell you anything about anyone. We don't know anything about the characters, about who they are and what makes them do the things they do. Or rather the things they would do, because as of episode 4 they haven't done a damn thing. At least 6 named characters have died so far. We know nothing about them, what their goals are, or even whose side they are on. Hell, we don't know if there are sides. We don't know what's happening.
Oh and the main characters are twin brother and sister and they are being set up to f*** each other. Wonderful. What a great replacement for Oboro and Gennosuke. Also they are apparently Oboro's and Gennouske's children even though we know that not to be possible because we saw them both die and Oboro was not pregnant, and particularly not with no damn twins. Also she stabbed herself in the stomach. Unless my high school sex ed class fails me, I'm pretty sure that's where the baby goes. It was Catholic school though so I may be wrong about that. This is the most disappointing part of all. It gets 10/10 sad pandas.
Enjoyment/Overall: Trash. I only gave it a 3 because I decided to go re-watch the original, and that made me happy again. The only reason I am going to finish this show is for nostalgia's sake. It is insulting to my memory of Basilisk. I'm not even going to acknowledge that this show exists. I am going to go full Indiana Jones Crystal Skull and block this out of my mind completely.
Basilisk Sequel, what Basilisk Sequel? Basilisk can't have a sequel, because everybody is dead as fuk. And it was glorious. Go watch it! Don't watch any hypothetical and nonexistent sequels to a show that was perfectly good as written.
Well.. I'm hugely disappointed. I really enjoyed the first series. The story was excellent, animation style was on point, and it wasn't trying to be anyone else. But this... this is.. a bastardized Naruto+KissxSis+FMA+Ironman+Steampunk cluster f***. ALL IN JUST 1 EP! Like I said earlier, the first series knew what it was. It knew what it wanted, and how to get there. The main heroine this season is immediately identifiable as a dere archtype. Why any dere should be in Basilisk, YOU GOT ME!? By the ending credits on the first episode I had trouble picking my jaw up in amazement (not positive) of the
transformation from Kouga, to this. The sheer fact that instead of solidifying the base of the story for it to stand on and progress on why things are the way they are right now, they instead use over 7 different references from the first series to support.. you guessed it, unjustifiable nothing! But hey you might relate in some understanding because they mention Kouga/Iga tension and then immediately sweep it under the rug so they can feed you a bunch of random info in the first episode so they can rush a story you won't feel attached to.
Yes yes, I understand I'm hating right now and that's ok to be honest. Because not every anime is for every person. Some people may see this and really enjoy it. That's the only reason I gave it stars 5 and the art/sound are good quality.. It's not horrible, but I don't think it's good. For those that do like it, good on ya and go have a blast. After deciding enough is enough with today's release of the 5th episode, I feel most people will stop before I did. In fact, most of the things I mentioned here can be realized within the first 2 episodes.
I love basilisk, I love how it time skipped and the villains were undoubtedly strong. I love that hachirou looks like Gennosuke too, it really eased me into the Basilisk I knew and loved. However...
This show has become a shadow of its former self quite fast. It was an impressive, gory, decapitations, violent, ninja/samurai style show with unique talents/powers to each character that could of been played out into a great series. Then you get into the later episodes to find out you've been spending almost 12 episodes alone just getting to know characters that can only kill ninja's called "The
Rain" (Aka. Possessed Farmers).
The side characters in this show were basically moral support, with some of the most fantastic powers in the show. Unfortunately they had little to NO impact on the show whatsoever besides acting as a diversion while Hachirou was either like "Yeah, I'm gonna do this" or "Nah, I'm gonna be gone on an adventure while everyone's fighting"
I love strong, OP characters, I love a strong villain, but the Joujin squad on this show were TOO strong, it makes it hard to watch on the supporting side of the MC's, you almost want to support them instead. The main characters/supporting characters spend the whole show attacking them over and over, and without fail the Joujinshuu always wins. Never actually doing any "impact" to the villain. I expected at some point some villains would fail or fall a lot sooner. Maybe even the supporting Kouga clan and Iga clan would have teamed up and made use of each others powers in homage to the lovers unique power, from the first/current Basilisk
So basically you take your whole time learning the past, powers, and everything of 12 characters, that you really don't need to care about because of how little they achieve. Feels like it all could of been cut out besides maybe Namemba and Gorone, the only interesting and useful supports for the show. The later half of the show also seems as if its oddly censored as well, which takes away from its overall charm. It feels like the shows finale will resemble the first series. I am left disappointed and bored because Basilisk's ouka scrolls couldn't really step up to the 24 episodes like the original could, a terrible shame.
