These Satoshi Kon's movies resemble each other in many aspects. Both tell private lifes of the stars. It's sometimes hard to distinguish reality and fiction in both of them (although in MA, thanks to the different centuries presented, it's a lot easier than in the PB). Drawing style is just the same, atmosphere as well, mysterious, awkward. Both are half-realistic, very psychological and kept in the same style. And definitely, both are recommended.

Nostalgia at its best! A look at women who think back upon their lives and the effects the experiences had upon them.

The stories are centered around the reminiscences of elderly protagonists who are prominent figures in the entertainment industry. As these characters begin to show age, they begin to brood over their inevitable fate. If you'd like a drama that will keep you on the edge of your seat, then I've got the perfect recommendation for you!

Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers) seems to maintain a underlying theme in his films. The psychological - reality versus dreamworld plot lines are richly detailed and keep views guessing at every scene change. We'll see if his upcoming "all-ages" film (Dreaming Kids?) continues to follow this 'what is reality?' concept.

Both has a similar beggining of a girl meeting an older men and helping him, which changes both of their lives

Both had similar aspects of finding their true love with a twist by using Time as their primary obstacle. Both are Impacting and gave a very deep meaning. The feels chart do not over shadow each other, they're equally beautiful. I don't know why people didn't thought about Millennium Actress when people watched Kimi no na wa, that's practically a more modernized version of it.

These movies incorporate a very interesting technique in its storytelling in order to tell the story of the life of one of its characters. The other characters in the movie are literally immersed into the lives of the characters giving a feeling that they were actually there, which in turn immerses the audience in their lives as well. Both movies are definitely very interesting to watch!

Don't get me wrong, the titles are actually pretty different but there are definitely some things, which both of them share. The main one: they're all about pursuit of love shown in a nonstop breathtaking action. These movies are also pretty unique themselves and every new shot grabs you stronger and deeper into the story. "Night Is Short" is an amazing comedy and "Millennium Actress" is a great drama, so they complement each other very well!

Fractured narrative style, lets the audience fill in the gaps, heavy on symbolism and themes and both are absolutely gorgeous to look at even though they were made on opposite ends of the budget spectrum.

Both are about two lovers separated by certain circumstances. The protagonist desperately tries to be reunited with his long lost love but as time passes it starts loosing hope. Both are about the true meaning of Love.

Though Millennium Actress' narrative continuity - albeit quite jumpy - contrasts with La Maison en petits cubes' lack of narrator, the two are uniquely similar in that they are framed narratives communicated via the melancholy reminiscences of an elderly protagonist. Both stories unfold as Impressionistic splashes of recollection; the audience follows as the past leads to the present, drawn into each respective protagonist's current despondence.

Both Anime deal with Actresses and the struggles the go through, though different kinds.

Old heroines in a pitch reminiscing about their past through multiple dramatic dream sequences. Mami Koyama voiced both Remy and Chiyoko.

the editing style is very good and plays important role in storytelling. if you like to ponder about why the scene was made the way director intended this is the film for you.

While they're pretty different, 'Millennium Actress' and 'The Tale of the Princess Kaguya' are still both movies about the life of a girl, its themes are very "Emotional And Captivating Fantasy Storytelling" according to Letterboxd which... yeah, true. Both movies are great and should be watched at least once.

Both use what is on the surface is a seemingly relatively straightforward fictional biopic as a vehicle for far more complex and multilayered story, both extensively reference other works, deal with legacy of an individual's work as a theme, as well as overlapping in the time periods covered. Many other similarities in plot, potentially as a result of Japanese and Western postwar dramas being an influence, and historical events given the time period covered. A striking number of visual similarities as well, notwithstanding that many of the same people worked on both: an artist painting on a hillside, the melodramatic train station scenes, kanto earthquake, train  read more

"The protagonist has fallen in love and has an object that must deliver to their beloved, so they embark road to a wild and weirdly animated adventure. This anime is spectacular, mindbending and has an amazing soundtrack" Is a description that fits both anime. Really, they are extremely similar. If you loved one, highly likely that you'll love the other.

These two films are similar in that they are both movies(not shows, although RK has a tv series). also they are romantic tragedies, with astoundingly beautiful animation. Each of them have a bit of action, although RK had considerably more so. And the only two films to make me cry out of love.

Might seem surprising, but I felt that these movies are more similar than what meets the eye. They both tell the story of a Japanese woman living before, during and after WW2 (of course, Millenium Actress also covers a time period exceeding the 1950s), the viewer practically witnessing them growing from childhood to adulthood and beyond. Taking the Japanese perspective of the war, both movies show that their culture is not characterised solely by atrocities and violence, unlike what is portrayed in many WW2-themed movies. Deeply connected to rebirth: rebirth of a society, of a country and of the people themselves.

Reality softens a bit around the edges, & the logic of dreaming mingles with the waking world. There is little anyone can do to avoid being swept along as they try to make sense of what's occurring around them, either through memory, as in Millennium Actress, or through reason & scientific observation, as in Penguin Highway.

How is this similar to Sennen Jojuu? It's how the dots connect one after the other.

Both plot revolves around girl with a key, and childhood promise. But Nisekoi is more harem & romcom oriented

They share romantic themes with their focus on young love, and both have a tragic edge to them near the end. Plus, both of the films center around the visual motif of a girl running. As such, I often tell people that The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo) feels very much like it was made by Satoshi Kon (director of Millennium Actress).

Both of these have highly realistic characters and excellent, photorealistic visuals.

Both Anime are about women who do great things through what can be called an idol career. It is also about remembering the past with fondness so to speak.

Both of these movies deal with actresses who happen to have grown up during the era of World War II. Both touch upon the troubles they went through during this time frame, from different point of views.

At first glance Millenium Actress and Paranoia Agent do not seem to warrant a recommendation. Yet they are two sides of the same mirror: MA explores the lyricism and beauty of escapism and PA exposes the darkest consequences of letting go of reality. Both are imbued with Satoshi Kon's unique flair for the bizarre and impressive imaginary. One complements the other.

Both of these deal with themes of aging, humiliation, and the difficulties of being an ordinary person without superpowers.
report Recommended by formosan
Both have a scene that involves firebombing, and both show the attitudes and culture of the Japanese people during WWII.
report Recommended by xMatronxMalicex
The protagonists in both of these stories come to know themselves better through their loves, and ultimately become strong women who are not going to collapse if their love falls through. They're about the empowerment of women without the loss of femininity and grace, and without degrading men.

I don't think that Metropolis and Milennium Actress have the same atmosphere with each other, but these films always remind me of how spectacular anime was back in '01. I felt that they both have these type of Miyazaki-visuals in each of them with superb scripting and equal emotion.

There is a notion of looking back at your teenage years in an attempt to fix your present.

Millennium Actress and the "Magnetic Rose" section of Memories were both worked on by Satoshi Kon. Both films deal with once famous and successful woman reliving their past through memories. Both are visually inventive films with great animation.

How life and art are related? Is it a good idea to blur the boundary between them? Neither title approaches these questions directly, but the creators of both definitely meditated on them. Needless to say that it looks most likely that the Kyousou Giga creators have seen Sennen Joyuu.
