Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi

Salaryman Tsuyoshi Mukouda is accidentally summoned as a hero to the Kingdom of Reijseger in another world to help defend against their enemies. Wary of the royal family's true intentions, Mukouda is able to talk his way out of the situation due to his non-combat skill, "Online Supermarket," which is deemed useless.

However, this power proves to be anything but useless. With this ability, Mukouda is able to cheaply purchase food products and utensils from Japan—most of which are considered luxuries in this world. As Mukouda cooks up a storm using his ability, he catches the eye of the fearsome mythical wolf Fel. The legendary beast swiftly negotiates a contract to become Mukouda's familiar, unable to resist the delicious dishes. With Fel by his side, Mukouda travels the world, earning his keep as an adventurer and merchant all the while enjoying delectable meals.

Tondemo Skill by Isekai Hourou Meshi is the kind of isekai that understands its genre very well and decides to play with it instead of taking it too seriously. The premise begins by subverting expectations: we follow the classic “hero summoned to another world”, but who, because he has no useful combat skills, is quickly discarded. The difference here is that the anime doesn't turn this into a big existential drama - there are no speeches about abandonment, loneliness or cruel fate. On the contrary, everything is handled with lightness and good humor, which makes the experience extremely enjoyable.

Mukouda is a simple, almost banal protagonist, ... which is precisely why he works so well. He doesn't want to save the world, defeat the demon king or become legendary; his goal is just to live comfortably, eat well and avoid trouble. This “anti-hero” attitude creates constant comic situations and allows the narrative to progress in an unpretentious way, focusing more on everyday life and the interactions between the characters than on major conflicts.

One of the biggest highlights of the anime is its supporting cast, especially the creatures that accompany Mukouda. The monsters are a veritable patchwork of different folklores, references to other anime and even elements of pop culture, but all of this is harmonized by excellent visual design and a lot of personality. Each creature has presence, charisma and a clear function within the story, which prevents them from becoming mere “mascots”.

Comedy is another strong point. It comes naturally, whether in the dialogues, the exaggerated reactions of the characters or the absurd seriousness with which food is treated. The anime manages to turn something as simple as cooking into almost epic scenes, while maintaining a relaxed tone. It's humor that doesn't just rely on quick jokes, but also on situations and cultural contrasts between the modern world and the fantasy world.

On the technical side, MAPPA's animation delivers exactly what you'd expect from the studio. The sets are rich in detail, well colored and used efficiently to reinforce the setting of the fantastic world. The action scenes, although not the main focus, are fluid and well choreographed, while the cooking sequences are given special care, with a level of detail that makes the viewer hungry.

In the end, the anime stands out for being an isekai that knows exactly what it wants to be: a light, fun and comfortable adventure. It doesn't try to reinvent the genre, but uses its clichés intelligently, turning them into strengths. It's the ideal type of anime for those looking for something unpretentious, well-produced and full of charm.

Mixed Feelings

This is hard to review, because Campfire Cooking does meet the expectations set in the title, this is about a guy who reincarnated in another world and his "skill" is to access an online store website to purchase items from his original world, so he is using this ability to lay back and explore this new world. That's it, that's the entire thing, there is nothing else going on.

This is just a chill anime, I'd argue that there is no action because nothing is at stake, and there doesn't seem to be any intention to put any action in this thing. This is like an ... "adventure" anime but there really is not any adventure, it's more like "exploration" or "traveling". It just exists and that's honestly fine

I have never seen an anime of this kind. I have watched cooking animes like Shokugeki no Soma, but it's not that type of anime. The way the food is shown and prepared feels more like Dungeon Meshi, but this is still very different and can't really be compared.

While I somehow enjoyed watching it, I am not really sure what made it appealing to watch. The animation is good but not crazy, the music is terrible and the characters and plot are like watching paint dry.

The characters so far are a trope, they only exist within the boundaries of their cliché personality and have nothing going on in the background, so they are completely predictable and it sometimes leans into being annoying. An example of this is the main character, who currently is in a position where he basically can't be harmed, but despite knowing this, still cowers in fear and refuses to fight while acting like a bitch, going completely astray from any logical decision or rationing, it's like the events in the anime so far have no repercussion on his personality, maybe the guy has undiagnosed Alzheimer or dementia and can't really make up new coherent memories. I think I just don't like the MC.

At the very least, it's worth to give this show a try, maybe you'll like it. I'm sure I had no reason to like it but here I am, finished the first season and currently watching S2.

Simply put, Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi a waste of time. Being a series made by Mappa, also being an isekai, I figured this was an easy watch. It was not that, it was just a cooking show with a wolf, cool. 12 episodes with 0 plot, basically the only fan service was bright colorful food, which is the best part of the show, seeing the food. It's very rare to come across an anime that refuses to have basic storytelling, but Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi pulls that off. This is the lowest effort a studio can ... give. A thoroughly disappointing series from such a reputable studio. If this is what Mappa is wasting time on, my advice to them would be this, less is more. Don't release garbage.

Animation 7/10
- The food is drawn well, the beasts are also done well, but the backgrounds can be muddy looking when they are outside.
Sound 6/10
- OP/ED are meh, SE are not great, and voice acting is just okay, nothing sound wise stands out.
Story 1/10
- This is rare for me to rate something under a 5 in any category for my scoring, but seriously, I can't in good conscience give this anything but a 1 story wise, because there is no story, this is slice of life cooking channel, and that's it.
Characters 4/10
- Another aspect of this series that just isn't remotely good. Main character has zero growth, doesn't use his abilities to their full potential, even after realizing the potential. Sui is cute, Fel is just an OP wolf, the goddesses are rarely seen or heard from.
Enjoyment 5/10
- This series had potential when it started, but then halfway into it, I was just watching it for completion. Like a lot of series in winter 2023, they had potential, and then became a fart in the wind.

I can't recommend this to anyone. If you like drawn food, go play Final Fantasy 15. Then again Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi is on par with FF15 in its trashiness, so maybe that's not a good idea. Either way, stay away from this waste of time, there are so much anime out there.
