Synopsis

Dressed in a conspicuous outfit and armed with an eccentric spirit, Hina Satou goes around insisting that she is the Asgardian god "Odin." When she crosses paths with a boy named Youta Narukami, she uses her precognition abilities to warn him about an impending catastrophe threatening the end of the world. But being a teenager preoccupied with his problems, Youta finds it hard to believe such a preposterous claim.

Somehow forced to tag along with her antics, he witnesses the effectiveness of Hina's skills with his own eyes and realizes that she truly is capable of divination. Nevertheless, despite her persistence in being a god, Hina is still a child who desires to see and experience the wonders life has to offer. With the world ending in 30 days, Hina, Youta, and their friends venture forward to create lasting memories they will cherish forever.

The hate for the anime is massively overblown, and the much maligned ending is nothing out of the ordinary for previous Jun Maeda writing or Key visual novels, like Angel Beats or Clannad. I think people like to jump on the hate bandwagon because it's easier to not have the burden of having to think for yourself. That's most of humanity it appears like now in the digital age, especially for modern audiences who watch anime vicariously through others and don't really know, (or care to know,) about the storied history and culture of the medium in the West (or the East, for that matter).

Therefore, ...

Mixed Feelings
Top part is a normal review, bottom part is about Jun Maeda & me ranting about what went wrong

Overall the series has a good concept, but fails at the execution. I can really only recommend it as something you should try, but can't encourage you to finish it.

It starts off strong, the idea of a omnipotent god warning a group of kids about the end of the world, then just plays with them is goofy. However, as the story progresses it starts to derail. It looses sight of the message it wanted to convey, weird plot devices start that could have been used differently, ...

The name Jun Maeda might ring a bell to fans of anime adaptations of visual novels from Key that were popular in the 2000s and early 2010s like Kanon, Air, and Clannad with his involvement in their writing. These titles were well known for having light comedy mixed in with heavy drama, romance, and fantasy elements that pushed things rather heavily with suspension of disbelief. Unfortunately, pushing out the same type of storytelling formula with all your works can lead to audiences tiring of someone’s creative works over time. Such is the case with Maeda’s most recent anime made, The Day I Became a God, ...
