Titles that people will pick up in person at a physical brick & mortar store like Animate or Gamers. As opposed to titles that are mostly ordered online (generally at Amazon). I think the Japanese use the term 店型 (shop model, taken literally, might have the wrong kanji but you get the point) or something like that.

A slight correction: Actually the word used in Japan is 店頭型
店頭 means storefront.

Oct 11, 2012 3:46 PM by symbv

@jmal, could you explain what storefront anime means?

^ Great stuff!

Just one thing:

> Haganai OVA adds 679 BDs, total 12,227.

Should it be: adds 697 BDs, total 12,245 instead?

Seven times its sales? Nice. So any idea what it sold before the anime started? Any clue what the figures are now for volume 1? Hmmm...but then the sales would reflect in the next LN volume as well. I'll look forward to that. I wonder if it'll cross 50k?

Bear in mind that we are talking about only the sales of Vol.1 (and sales of one chain instead of broad national sales), which would have dropped to a low level after so many months since its publication (but then one would also expect some pick-up in sales since the anime adaptation was announced but before the anime was aired). And because it was at such a low level, it was not reflected in the standard Oricon sales ranking (I guess those subscribed to the premium service may have access to those data).

Ah but the last time I saw Nobuna's latest volume.....I think it was after the anime, it sold 30k or something in 2 weeks. Maybe the next volume will cross 50k...or is that hoping for too much?

But....most LNs I've seen(OniAi, PapaKiki, DxD) sell 30k even without(or before) anime adaptations. :( Is that a bad sign?

The vol.9 of Nobuna sold around 32k in 2 weeks (which was published in July just after the anime started to air). Vol.8 sold <25k in 2 weeks while vol.7 sold <20k in 2 weeks.

phoenixalia said:

basically, how much sales does an LN need to say that the anime was very good advertisement? SAO and Hyouka are out of this world, I know, but I was just wondering.

Not sure, but we can say that any sharp rise in the sales of the vol.1 of manga/LN after its anime starts to air can almost entirely attributed to an anime boost (and perhaps part of the sales boost after the anime announcement as well). With this in mind, we can see why adaptation anime is so attractive to anime production people. All those LN which got this kind of jump on an order of multiple times of its pre-anime level should be seen as a very good advertisement.

In fact, Oda Nobuna is far from the best performing manga/LN in terms of sales boost (of vol.1). There are at least 6 titles in the Summer season anime that are above Oda Nobuna:
1. Total Eclipse - over 21 times
2. JoshiRaku - over 18.5 times
3. Jinrui wa Suitaishimashita - 15 times
4. Kokoro Connect - over 10 times
5. Bimbougami ga - over 7 times
6. Sword Art Online - almost 7 times

phoenixalia said:

Ah and how much of a boost did Kore wa Zombie get?

I could not find the data for the first season but for the second season it got slightly less than 3 times of sales boost for vol.1 since anime was aired.

phoenixalia said:

well, that IS news to me. I'm glad that you know all this info. :D But all the same, the highly skilled staff and the execution would have cost money as well. but that is nice to know. One way or the other, it had a bigger budget than other shows even if its not animation.

We do not know how much Studio Gokumi paid those amazing staff but we know that the number of frames and cuts had a direct impact on the underlying cost of animation, particularly since most of the Inbetweens Animation now are subcontracted out which means squeezing cost may not be easy if the number of frames/cuts is high. On the other hand, for the animation in Nobuna to impress, even without high number of cuts, the still frames and CG MUST be done very very well. And I think we can agree that substantially more effort may have been put there in Nobuna compared to other anime.

Just wonder what made you say that even taking away the animation it had a bigger budget than other shows?

phoenixalia said:

I'm not sure if you follow, but do you know if any otome games like arcana or hakuouki got a boost or became more popular after their anime?

No.. I don't really have the data. In fact I am also interested in how much boost erogame anime like Mashiro Iro Symphony, Fortune Arterial, Yosuga no Sora, KoiChoco etc gave to its original game too, because compared with say Hakuouki the sales of those anime is definitely on a low side, often below the manabu (breakeven) line, which means the business model of those anime has to bear even stronger relation to sales boost for the original material than manga/LN adaptation.

If they want to do it, a sales of over 4k is good enough for a second season.

I read it from a blog by a staff national bookstore chain (which sells books of all genres not just manga/LN) he reported that in the 3 months since the anime started, the sales of vol.1 of Nobuna is close to SEVEN times of its sales in the 3 months before the anime started.

By comparison, Campione vol.1 sold around 3.5 times of the pre-anime sales.

30k extra? 50k?

Ah and how much of a boost did Kore wa Zombie get?

I'm sorry for so many questions.

Actually it turns out to be a MYTH. Most fans, including many otakus in Japan, thought Nobuna was costly because its sakuga was so impressive. However, in an interview with Nobuna's producer Takao Aoki, http://www.sbbit.jp/article/cont1/25457?page=1 he said in fact the number of cuts and frames used in Nobuna is even fewer than Saki episode of A and other anime done by the studio. The trick according to him is careful position of the key frames as well as smart and efficient use of still frames and CG so that even though the audience are watching the same scene or cut they do not feel it. Of course this actually involved highly skilled staff and very good execution. Otakus were so impressed that they wonder what those staff can achieve if they allow to use a bigger budget.

Btw, did Nobuna or any of the LN Anime this summer get a LN sales boost?I've been checking the list every week and I haven't noticed anything.

Cuz I remember Kore wa Zombie got a second season cuz the novels got a big boost.
Campione probably? Anime sold 4k which is good and the latest volume, volume 13, was released last August and sold around 10k I think. Not sure if the LN side is good or not, I don't know the data for the past volumes. Though chances of this getting a second season is slim because of anime original ending. They need a lot of fixing for it.

I thought for an anime like Nobuna at least 6k is required? That is unless LN sales went shooting up like Kore wa Zombies?

I love the show but I'm not keeping my hopes up.

Hmm.... For fans of TT the deal that it is a great anime was sealed in Wakana's arc in ep.5-6.
She was in Minchi mode back then though, and ep 7 had too much drama thrown on Sawa, watching those wasn't too pleasant. When Sawa's situation started to clear out I could finally enjoy the series and only then. I'm unable to praise beginning either as its concentrated on Konatsu, really inferior clone of Ohana. Wakana and Sawa are definitely better than Minchi and Nako but they had almost no chance to show it because of Tari Tari's plot.
I know that fans loved it before 8-13 but it looks more like blind affection toward PA Works to me because *some reasons above*.
