I'm glad to see so many quality manga series doing well! I'm particularly happy to see so many of my favorite comedies, like Gintama, Sket Dance, Silver Spoon, etc. on the list. It's interesting that One Piece had four times the sales of any other series--it's popularity never ceases to amaze me. I'm looking forward to another good year! :)

After many many decades of manga, the Japanese truly do have the best tastes and know what it means to be a masterpiece of a series. One Piece, the greatest manga series of all time.

This is why it has a second season of anime coming. Their goal was increased manga sales and they shot up, especially first week sales. Volume 18 dropped back, but it was well after the series ended. I am eager to see what happens to the sales next year with the 2nd season.

Yeah, that proves it again - The top manga sellers are almost exclusively stuff I can enjoy, which makes it different from the top-selling anime. Seriously, from the top 19 I've seen all animes that were made, read some and the rest is on my plan to read, and with the exception of Bleach they're all stuff I really like too.

Anyway, I particularly enjoy seeing Uchuu Kyoudai, Magi and Chihayafuru. And I didn't know Toriko was so far behind Naruto. It does better in the ratings, but I guess the manga is not as popular yet?
I probably regret this post by now.

The manga industry and range of titles is vast.. None of my most favorite manga (perhaps except Kimi ni Todoke) is in the list either, and I am happy that I buy those less popular manga to support diversity and depth of the manga market ;-)
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

I buy them to read them and to support them. I am just glad that the industry understands that not all titles can have the same market success as One Piece. It is great that things don't get cancelled just because they lack mass appeal.

I buy and read what I like. I read some of the ones on the list in monthly magazines from time to time but don't love them enough to buy all the tankobons too.

This is why I always have doubt with the Shonen Jump way. That "extend it no matter what when it sells; but cut it even prematurely if it looks not popular" has ruined so many manga for me, including the very popular Dragonball and City Hunter, which are extended far far far beyond the point of being fun or appealing.

Bleach wasn't last year either.

And Naruto is 3rd by total sales and has the top 2 non-one piece individual volumes, so how that is "not in the top 3" I don't know?

I wonder how far off vol 10 of Saki was. Probably hit about 340k or so.

Well, this has been talked about quite many times in Japan. The standard practice in Japan is 10% of the revenue of manga sales goes to the author, so you can expect 34 Yen (10% of the listed price 340 yen) per book sold goes to the author. In 2010, One Piece sold 32.3 million copies which means 1.35 billion yen for the author.

This is not it !!!

The author is paid an amount for the serialization (the one I just mentioned above is for the tankobon, not the manga magazine serialization). For that, it is estimated to be 50k yen per page for One Piece. Each week we have on average 20 pages of One Piece and it appears 48 times on Shonen Jump in 2010. This comes to 48 million Yen for the author.

And this is still not it !!

The author got paid for the use of his work in anime TV series and movie. It is estimated to be 300k Yen per episode and 1 million yen for a movie. In 2010 there were 50 episodes of One Piece and one movie. This comes to 16 million Yen.

Still not yet !!!

The author got a share for One piece merchandise and advertisement deals. One estimate put it at 1.5 billion Yen.

Add all the four sources of income, and you get 3.12 billion yen (38 million USD) the author made in 2010 !!!!

It's just the power of the anime, they'll drop next year, check Toriko for an example.

Now commenting on the list:

I'm really glad in seeing Uchuu Kyoudai in the 4th place.

It's funny that Hunter x Hunter is in that list despite being in a hiatus for 9 months already, it's gonna be really interesting to see how much it'd sell in a year where Togashi doesn't take any breaks.

Magi getting in that position after a couple of months of its anime starting was really surprising, though too bad the adaptation is horrible (for a manga reader) till now.
