Ogura Hyakunin Isshu is a classical Japanese anthology of one hundred Japanese waka[poem] by one hundred poets. Hyakunin isshu can be translated to "one hundred people, one poem [each]." It was compiled by Fujiwara no Teika in the Heian period while he lived in the Ogura district of Kyoto, Japan.
It can also refer to the card game of Uta-Garuta, which uses a deck composed of cards based on the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu most often played during New Year's.
The anime Chouyaku Hyakuninisshu: Uta Koi., is a show based on liberal interpretations of various poems published in the Hyakunin Isshu from the viewpoint of a character based on Fujiwara no Teika.
Karuta is another card game utilizing the Hyakunin Isshu. If you've seen or read Chihayafuru anime/manga, then you are familiar with Kyogi Karuta, a competitive form of karuta played by opponents matching uta-garuta cards to the first phrases of each poem as read aloud by a speaker, according to rules set by the All Japan Karuta Association.
Compilation
One of Teika's diaries, the Meigetsuki, says that his son, Fujiwara no Tame'ie, asked him to arrange one hundred poems for Tame'ie's father-in-law, who was furnishing a residence near Mount Ogura; hence the full name of "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu". In order to decorate screens of the residence, Fujiwara no Teika produced the calligraphy poem sheets.
In his own lifetime, Teika was better known for other work. For example, in 1200 (Shōji 2), Teika prepared another anthology of one hundred poems for ex-Emperor Go-Toba. This was called the Shōji Hyakushu.
Other Hyakunin Isshu anthologies
Many other anthologies compiled along the same criteria—one hundred poems by one hundred poets—include the words hyakunin isshu, notably the World War II-era Aikoku Hyakunin Isshu, or One Hundred Patriotic Poems by One Hundred Poets. Also important is Kyōka Hyakunin Isshu, a series of parodies of the original Ogura collection.
Aired: Oct 23, 2005 to Jun 19, 2006 Length: 26 eps @ 25 min Rated: PG-13 Genres: Adventure, Drama, Psychological, Mystery, Fantasy, Supernatural
Animated by Artland and directed by Hiroshi Nagahama, the television series covered every chapter from the first five volumes of the manga and the first story from volume six, but did not adhere to the original order. At the 5th Tokyo Anime Award competition held at the Tokyo International Anime Fair in 2006, the series won grand prizes in the categories of television series and best art direction (for Takashi Waki).
Plot Summary: (from ANN): They are neither plants nor animals. They differ from other forms of life such as the micro-organisms and the fungi. Instead they resemble the primeval body of life and are generally known as "Mushi". Their existence and appearance are unknown to many and only a limited number of humans are aware of them. Ginko is a "Mushi-shi" who travels around to investigate and find out more about the "Mushi". In the process, he also lends a helping hand to people who face problems with supernatural occurances which may be related to the "Mushi".
(from Steins;Gate wikia): Rintarou Okabe (岡部倫太郎, Okabe Rintarō), a.k.a Okarin, is a self-proclaimed mad scientist and the main protagonist of Steins;Gate. He is a melodramatic, eccentric individual, who likes to assume the nickname "Kyouma Hououin", and often uses this to introduce himself to others. For the most part, people address him by his actual name or nickname, much to his chagrin. He also likes to pose as an agent working against a certain "Organization" which he thinks is always after him, as he believes this kind of image gives him a cool and mysterious aura. Initially, he is portrayed as being rather arrogant, however, it is later suggested that this is due to Rintarou's eccentricities and social awkwardness. He usually gives off the impression of being delusional and paranoid, engaging in strange mannerisms such as talking to himself on the phone and engaging in fits of manaical laughter often, this is in fact a façade he wears in order to make life interesting for his dear childhood friend Mayuri.
Origin: Kanagawa, Japan Genres: Hip Hop Years active: 1994–present Members: Ryo-Z, Ilmari, Pes, Su, DJ Fumiya, (past members - DJ Shige, DJ Shouji)
(from wikipedia): The group was formed in 1994 by Ryo-Z and Ilmari, who were later joined by Pes. The Rip in Rip Slyme stands for their initials. Slyme was a popular children's toy at that time. Their name is also a pun on the phrase "lips' rhyme". Winning an amateur rapping contest "Young MCs In Town", they started their musical career with their first album Lips Rhyme in 1995. Later they added DJ Fumiya and Su. In general, Fumiya composes most of the music, while Ryo-Z, Pes, Ilmari, and Su write their own lyrics. However, before Fumiya became a member, Pes composed most of the songs.
They became more successful when signed to Warner Music Group in 2000. Their first major single was "Stepper's Delight" released 22 March 2001. In 2002 they received MTV Video Music Awards Japan for "Best Newcomer" and "Best Hip-hop Group". The same year they released a big-budget album "Tokyo Classic", which became Japan's first million-selling hip-hop album, with a sound compared to James Brown's soul and funk. Two singles from the album, "Funkastic" and "Rakuen Baby" collected MTV awards in 2003. "Super Shooter", featured as a B-side to their single "Galaxy", is the theme song for the anime Gantz. Rip Slyme has also provided voiceover work as well as the ending theme for the Japanese dub of SpongeBob SquarePants. In 2010, Rip Slyme was one of the artists launched on Warner Music's new sublabel, unBORDE.
To date they have released 6 indies singles with 17 major singles. They as well have released 2 indie albums, 7 major albums, 1 live album, 1 indies collection album, and 1 best of album.
Pom Poko is a Japanese animated film, the eighth written and directed by Isao Takahata and animated by Studio Ghibli. Consistent with Japanese folklore, the tanuki are portrayed as a highly sociable, mischievous species, able to use "illusion science" to transform into almost anything, but too fun-loving and too fond of tasty treats to be a real threat – unlike the kitsune and other shapeshifters. Prominent testicles are an integral part of tanuki folklore, and they are shown and referred to throughout the film, and also used frequently in their shapeshifting. This remains unchanged in the DVD release, though the English dub (but not the subtitles) refers to them as "pouches". Also, in the English dub and subtitles, the animals are never referred to as "raccoon dogs", which is the more accurate English name for the tanuki, instead they are referred to rather incorrectly as just "raccoons".
Plot Synopsis: (from ANN): Faced with the destruction of their habitat due to the growth of Tokyo, a group of tanuki try to defend their homes. They decide to use their transforming talents to try to hold back the new development. Two of them, especially skilled at transforming, are sent to Shikoku to enlist the help of three sages. Meanwhile, the rest of them do their best to disrupt the construction site, at first causing accidents, and then actually haunting the site. However, the humans are very persistent, and soon the tanuki are forced to use more and more extreme measures to save their home.
