- What Did You Think Of Anime *As A Genre* Before You Got Into It?

For Me, I Thought It Was Sick, Perverted, A Sign Of Weakness And "Low-Life-Ism", Super-Duper Cheesy, And Only For Super-Nerds... There Were Exceptions Though, I Had Always Liked Movies Like Princess Mononoke Or Kiki's Delivery Service. The Above Is What I Thought Of The Hard-Core Anime Nerds... *I Also Told Myself That I Would Never Ever Become An Anime Nerd* ... Of Course I DID Become An Anime Nerd =/ And See That I've Been Very Naive About The Whole Thing... *Though I Guess I Wasn't Completely Wrong :P It Can Be Very Pervy Sometimes* ...

-Yeah, I Know I Was Alittle Harsh T'wards It, But For Some Reason It Was A Large Point I Made That I Only Liked "Very Realistic" Things... Also I Have A Childhood Friend Who Is An Anime Nerd And I Might Not Have Liked It Because He Did... "Friendly Childhood Rivalry" Sort Of Thing...

I thought I would enjoy it, but I just didn't know where to start, and I was more into video games. It wasn't until 2011 I decided to get started on one, and the rest is history!

I thought it was just cartoons with very cute/hot character designs.

I watched Yu Yu Hakusho and Pokemon alongside Ed, Edd, and Eddy and Johnny Bravo. At the time, they all seemed the same to me. Didn't even know the word anime until I was in high school.

I thought they would be childish and boring.

I started cause i couldn't find any decent TV series to watch and because there's less than 5 movies / year worth watching. So i was really bored and thought "what the heck lets give it a try" and right now i'm really happy that i did :)

Found out what it was only after I'd watched a lot of Pokemon, Digimon, and Dragon Ball Z on the cartoon channel. Then I sought out others and became an anime fan. I didn't have an opinion because I didn't know it existed.

Can't remember exactly what I thought of anime, but I know I didn't like whole "manga style". I thought it was unnecessary because you were just copying an already existing style, thus being unoriginal. Or something.

That had more to do with drawing manga, though.

...Heh, how fun it is to look back to after a 180° turn :P

Honestly speaking, anime had been growing up with me. Watched it since I was 4 or 5. It had been a part of me for the longest time I can ever remember.

If I am to precisely state my perception towards it, there's only one word I can use to describe them - "different".

I didn't even know it is anime when I was very young. I only have the knowledge that all the animated things I am watching are cartoons. But I discovered some of them are anime. I always think they are cool

I watched Pokemon, DBZ, Digimon and all that growing up so watching it was just natural for me. As I grew up I just moved away from shounen and started watching other anime. Judging an entire medium without even looking into it is silly. It's like saying "I heard Justin Bieber and thought it was horrible, so music must be horrible." Or "I read Twilight and hated it, so books must be horrible." I could go on but I'll stop before I make people mad. >.> The point is, 90% of the time there's going to be something out there for you within each medium, if not several things. The trick is just in knowing where to look.

I had no particular preconception of what anime was, I think I uncounsciously thought it was just another entertainment medium, which it is...

Since really small, I had access to anime, with Cantonese dub(don't live in China BTW, and anime in HK never had their openings remade as far as I can tell). The thing is that everything that seemed to me which had the better and more complex plot at the time(most of it still do) had Japanese song openings or endings instead of a generic BGM before a cartoon.
So to me Japanese animation were always superior in comparison, technically I shouldn't actually comment on this topic as there was never a part of my life "before" anime.
The funny realisation about it is that the best cartoons tend to have a better soundtrack, like how old Woody Woodpecker cartoons are much more interesting than most children's cartoons today and have great tunes at the same time.

I was neutral towards anime. Watched Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Naruto, but not much else. I just thought of them as just another form of cartoon, nothing more.

Wasn't until 2009 when i watched Chobits that i got serious about anime.

I grow up with manga... Romance, Shonen, Shoujo, Seinen... Ecchi(Since the age of 6, though back then, I always wondered why the main characters like tits and ass so much...)

So yeah, anime is always anime. But I didn't think anyone over the age of 20 would watch anime. I myself pretty much don't watch anime till around 19.

I didn't really think of DBZ as anime, but I remember thinking it was overrated and stupid when I was 8. It just seemed like endless scenes of characters and never actually fighting which is what the show was supposedly about.

Well Honestly speaking, Anime was born with me.
instead of watching cartoons Like Dexter ecc. , at the age of 4 i watched Digimon and Pokemon. You know both were truly a masterpiece for me.

but then , if we speak about on-going anime ecc. , the first one was Bleach and before i got into it. i thought that anime were cartoons and a usless way of wasting time. But i was wrong, because you can learn a lot from them. Like what to do before eating! Ittadakimasu~! xD, and how to enjoy your free time.

First, GAHH! The way you are writing is annoying!

Second, I was into anime ever since I saw anime and cartoons on tv xD Loved them then, loved them as I grew up and loved them when I realised some of what I was watching were anime and not only cartoons and generally what anime is!

I just thought they were more cartoons.

The idea of 'foreign entertainment' didn't really hit me for a long time. I'd been watching stuff like English verison of Asterix since I was a little kid.

I was guilty of associating the entire medium with Pokemon and DBZ both of which I hated. Pokemon annoyed the crap out of me and DBZ just seemed stupid. All of the techniques that are specific to anime, even outside of other cartoons (the over-exaggerated facial expressions, the change in the eyes due to emotion, the movement markings, everything), made me hate it more.

Even when I finally started watching Bleach and then Fullmetal Alchemist, those aspects still annoyed me. As I watched more, I began to appreciate their value. How in one frame they can communicate an enormous amount of emotion and give a punch of laughter stronger than without those techniques. Now I love them.

I'm glad that I got into it later in life because I think that I'd have missed a lot of the subtle humor that is geared toward a mature mind.
A hero will sacrifice the one he loves to save the world. A villain will sacrifice the world for the one he loves. I'll take the villain.

I just thought they were cartoons. I started watching anime at a pretty young age with Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z, and Digimon (wasn't a Pokemon kid, thought the show was stupid). I got more and more into them and I started to realize the distinct difference between anime and traditional cartoons.

I was always interested in the medium, because I liked the art and stuff, but I just couldn't be bothered with searching any sites or finding anything to watch. Until I just randomly watched Lucky Star and Full Metal Panic last year.

Never was really into watching any sort of Anime or Cartoons when i was young (since i was not allowed to do so), so when i first found out about anime was when i stumbled onto a video about it, so i thought it looks interesting and here is where i am today. Never did i think anything about Anime since it was another form of entertainment, but the only thing i thought all this time from the beginning i that i need subs until i understand Japanese in the near future.

Well, I've watched stuff like CCS, DBZ and Inuyasha during my childhood so I always had a positive image of anime. I watched it on and off during middle school (Death Note anyone?) and I really started getting into it last summer. So yeah, I've always liked anime.

I didn't think much of the medium or the subculture. To be honest, I still have a mixed opinion for a variety of reasons, but unlike before, I do acknowledge that, even taking into account my peculiar tastes, there is a lifetime supply for me to enjoy. Occasionally, I'll even be moved provocatively.

I didn't think of it at all. I wasn't aware of it but I was always attracted to the less "cartoony" Disney offerings and stuff like Johnny Quest, Superman, Spider Man, X-Men, etc., also things like Heavy Metal. When I discovered anime, I was absolutely smitten. BTW, I was an adult when I discovered it.

I actually saw pretty mature rated anime when I was still in grade school (Wicked City, Crying Freeman, Ninja scroll, and many more I cannot remember titles too). I always found myself more attached to watching anime or shows similar to anime than the generic everyday cartoons. Though sadly, I didn't have cable tv as a child (nor do I have it now), so I didn't have any Toonami or Adult Swim as I grew up. Though I had other channels... that aired more mature series.. again... (Uncensored version of Dragonball Z and GT <- omigawd so mach blud, Descendants of Darkness <- Shounen Ai , Fushigi Yugi, Record of Lodoss War, Slayers, etc.).

tl;dr: I was aware of anime but didn't take it as serious as I do now.

First saw Ranma 1/2 at the age of 7, and I thought, "WTF IS THIS SH*T?" and proceeded to think that anime was cartoon porn.

I thought that for 6 years straight, until I saw Reborn. Then I got addicted. :D

My friend told me about her friend who knew about anime. I actually thought it was pretty cool and made an anime picture slideshow (I just googled "sad anime girls") to the song White Horse by Taylor Swift in the 6th grade, and had a pretty fun time.

I never really thought much of it, but I was interested. When I eventually found the anime "Elfen Lied", I was ecstatic and discovered something wonderful and have loved it ever since.

I guess I was interested in it for a while, before that I never thought much of it.
Dont touch me I'm in despair.

In the 1990s, I saw commercials for the usual suspects, then sometimes the toys and whatever merchandise there was. Aside from the art styles that I didn't like, my usual reaction was "these shows look cheesy". It took an awful lot of separate instances of tangential exposure to Japanese media to get over that.
