SynopsisFeudal Japan - A time of danger, intrigue and deception. Jubei is a masterless ninja who travels the land alone, hiring his services to those with gold...or a worthy cause. His fearsome abilities have served him well, but a hideous plot to overthrow the government threatens to end his wandering ways and possibly his life.
When a small village succumbs to a terrible plague, a team of ninjas are sent to investigate, and realize that all is not as it seems. Ambushed, they are wiped out by a fearsome man-monster with incredible powers, leaving only one alive - Kagero, a beautiful female ninja, whose touch can bring instant death. Jubei saves her from a fate worse than death, and unwittingly becomes drawn into the web of treachery. He is soon faced with his greatest challenge, an enemy for whom death holds no fear, with the power to destroy Jubei`s world. (Source: anidb) |

Either Basilisk was influenced by Ninja Scroll or the had the same source material, because a few of the techniques can be found in both, as well as some names. Of course that means whichever one you see second will seem unoriginal, so space it out. They're both very good.
Ninja ninja ninja and more ninja :)
both got a lot of action, its about ninja clans, both got really cool techniques. And both are creepy when it comes to monster. Both got 'immortal' bosses and rape scenes. In short both are good

Aug 7, 20081 of 1 episodes seen 6 of 7 people found this review helpful Ninja scroll is by far one of the earliest memories of most anime otaku, namely it's respective aspect of sewing together a storyline that - for the most part incomprehensible at times folds together major character 'types' that have been made popular in more recent action titles.
As a movie, ninja scroll provides the main villain who, for the most part remains unseen throughout the duration of the film. Our main protagonist is a vagabond named jubei kipagami who brings with him ...a shrouded past that faced him against the main villain and his new scheme to rain terror on the present day japan.
What the movie does not fall on specifically are facts, this is a fiction for the purpose of enjoyment and should be considered only as such. The substance or 'point' behind ninja scroll comes through when a storm washes over a small village, afterwards, evil forces at work have spread word of an epidemic which clears the area, the 'police' a small clan is dispatched to see what may have caused the epidemic and are viciously attacked by a large demon type with a dual edged broad sword that he throws like a large boomerang.
The story is filled with the in and outs of the supernatural villains who, with a small amount of luck are quickly dispatched by our hero and his female love interest kagero a cursed ninja woman who taste poison due to her immunity. While Jubei should have no real 'interest' in going, a government agent 'forces' him through poisoning and a small reward.
The rest of the outcomings involve walking, action scenes and the eventual conclusion, a variety of action sequences take place over an hour or so of superb animation which is fluid, stark and brilliantly executed. However, ninja scroll does not seem to 'work' as a single film, while albeit short lived, the characters move with a small cloud of mystery and unfilled life that could have been explored even more.
Double crosses are the name of the game, from homosexual semi-conductors to blind swordsman, this anime easily enlist extremes to keep the small team from exploring any further to meet the final conclusion that, for the most part on 'present' standards falls short of what fans may expect.
Falling in under an hour would give any anime title a short leash of what it's fully capable of but, remains enjoyable. As memorable as ninja scroll is, there is respect for it as one of the few titles to exploit molestation to such extremes, it never leaves with a bitter sweat taste in one's mouth. The full gore and realism in deaths are in some cases slightly over done, but, for the most part understandable.
In a nutshell, ninja scroll is not so bad it's 'good' and it's not one of the most stellar performances in a anime film either, it's in a comfortable spot thats it's own and remains there despite it's age. As a fun one shot, Ninja scroll is an easy way to strike up conversation once you've seen it at any anime convention. read more

Apr 14, 20081 of 1 episodes seen 8 of 11 people found this review helpful Ah Ninja Scroll, the epitome of everything a ninja anime needs and tries...and fails to be. My friend and I saw this at our local Blockbuster and he had heard of it from a coworker who said "WATCH THIS MOVIE!" Now generally when I get recommendations from my friends I don't enjoy them all too much but Ninja Scroll was and is possibly one of my favourite films.
Story: Ninja Scroll in a very realistic sense is an anime B-movie. So the story was pretty heinous. Essentia...lly the entire plot can be seen as a device to switch setting and to move to the next fight scene. However the story itself (if you're actually paying attention) isn't all too bad. There were some interesting little character developments and a couple neat twists and turns. It gets slightly weird towards the end and the actual ending itself was a little lacking. But the forte of the anime is the action scenes. Almost all of them were brilliant, I say almost all because frankly I wanted to see a couple stretched out a little longer. Each enemy that Jubei faces is different and even though it's pretty clear that he can't be beaten it's interesting to see him face some of the tougher opponenets.
Art: The art completely and perfectly suits the feel of the anime. The art isn't good, it isn't bright or colourful....it's mediocre. But the movie wouldn't feel right without the style of art that's used. Granted there were 2-3 moments where I was forced to turn on the lights because I felt like I was going to have a seizure. Most of the screen flashed red and black really quickly and I quickly averted my eyes. But that's my only qualm about the art.
Sound: Cheesy, oldschool....perfect for the movie.
Character: Jubeii is....the best and most powerful swordsman ever. Well, maybe not ever, but he's still pretty amazing and he has a good heart. All the characters are pretty one dimensional are never developed. You get a couple "reveal" moments, but they're a little bit boring as well. About the only noteworthy character is Kagero. I felt really sorry for her during pretty much the entire movie. However the interactions and "development" of characters is meaningless to the film. The film is about action and fighting so, for me at least, it's understandable that the characters are pretty flat.
Enjoyment: I love Ninja Scroll. It's a seriously fun ride. There's nothing deep about it, there's no meaning to it....the film is about action and that's exactly what it delivers. The movie is also quite gory and has a lot of nudity in it. There's also a really hilarious sex-scene...well...it was at least funny to me. There's also rape...so if you're offended by that you probably should steer clear.
If you enjoy Ninja Scroll, which I can only hope you do, you should definitely check out Wicked City, which is from the same director and in many respects is practically the same film. read more

Apr 6, 20081 of 1 episodes seen 5 of 12 people found this review helpful This is one of the Japanese animated movies that have left a long lasting mark on me.
It influenced me alot in artistic style, and other ways.
It's very much like typical old Japanese samurai stories, but with all the stuff animation allows in.
Ninja techniques were great.
I loved watching it and I watch it again now and then.
I don't know why many people have a bad experience with it.
Anyway, I'd reccommend this anime to hardcore samurai or ninja anime ...fans.
Or men who are interested in animations and over the age of 27.
Best suited for men in their 40s.
Best Ninja Animation Movie ever!! read more
