Nice to see that Persona 4 is the top seller of this Fall season. That gives me some hope that its amazing predecessor may get animated in a near future. (Though it's still just my hopeful thinking.)

nice that Hellsing is there!!! as well as Guilty Crown getting 12k sales
and as usual Gundam Unicorn tops them all lol

i watch the first episode of persona 4 and the animation quality very much like a naruto filler episode visual experience lol, why do people like this show if it has that kind of pathetic animation? anime should be watch mainly for its animation since anime just means animation in japanese language anyway

Because clearly that story and plot isn't worth watching for if the animation is bad.

But seriously, if everyone should watch anime because solely of animation, then Guilty Crown should have sold 50k+. But it didn't happen, so your regular anime fan appreciates a good plot as much as good animation, thank you very much.

Just to say that Guilty Crown has better animation than the rest, but it didn't sell like hotcakes if people watch because of animation. Even Working'!! outsells Guilty Crown. Could be because the plot and story isn't executed very well.

As I have never watched (or even played) Persona 4, I have no comment on that. My point simply is that anime fans loves good story executed well even if it has standard animation more than top-notch animation without a good story.

Bullshit. Having fans is one thing, having an adaption succeed is a completely different one.

A good example would be Umineko. Yeah right, look at aaaaall those fans and how the anime flopped. P4 simply is a VERY good adaption. That's why it sells. Its writing basically. (Because fans know the story and the visuals seem to be not too good either..)
Guilty Crown is the complete opposite. It looks nice, but the writing is apparently atrocious. (Writing, not story mind you. The story is very much a matter of taste. The writing.. not so much)

you have no point unless you both watch Guilty Crown and Persona 4 then, just try watching the first episode of Persona 4 and first episode of Guilty Crown then tell me who has the better plot and plot execution later on, because for me Persona 4 is no way have a better plot nor better plot execution than the hated Guilty Crown

so for me Persona 4 has low visual quality and have mediocre story

And that's when you misrepresent my argument. I merely refuted your point that people should 'watch anime because of animation only' (in your own words) and my point is people who watches anime prioritize good story more than animation, because anime is a form of story-telling, not just to see beautiful pictures animated and moving around. Because if people watch anime just to see beautiful pictures, then Guilty Crown should have been a hit success among the fall animes (as it has supposedly top-notch animation), but it isn't.

Whether the story and execution of Persona 4 is better or worse than Guilty Crown is irrelevant to my point. But based on sales people loves Persona 4 more than Guilty Crown even if it has mediocre animation, so it could be Persona 4's story is executed better than GC.

(And if someone going to argue with me because Persona 4 is a successful game= successful anime adaptation then read previous posters' arguments. They can explain why is this false.)

Umineko doesn't have that much of a fanbase anyway. Persona 4 is much more popular, so it would sell regardless of it being bad or good.

and i understand this really, i know that good story is the main factor of why most people watch a movie or a series and im just part of the minority that priorities animation first before the story, but read below

my point is that you should not jump to conclusions that Persona 4 has indeed far better plot and story exeuction than Guilty Crown so im daring you to just watch at least the first episode (or first 2 episodes) of Guilty Crown before you judge that Persona 4 has way way way better plot

any movies and tv series that is popular does not mean it has good plot, remember naruto? remember bleach? and all their fillers? i bet you still love those anime that has lesser episodes but they are not so popular

This is demonstrably false and I really wish people would stop perpetuating this misunderstanding. The correlation between the sales of source material and sales of the anime adaptation is fairly poor. It helps, but does no come close to guaranteeing, success.

If original medium sales and anime sales followed some sort of consistent, direct relationship, Moshidora would be one of the best selling shows in history. Instead it sold maybe 500 copies a volume. If you object that we should restrict it to otaku-centric properties, then just look at almost any visual novel adaptation. Top 10 VNs regularly get adapted only to sell less than 4k a volume, often much worse. And of course there's a large graveyard of poor-selling video game and manga and light novel adaptations. Persona's success was not guaranteed, even less so it being a 30k+ smash hit.

no you are wrong, Umineko and your top 10 VN are Visual Novel which played by just clicking your mouse to read dialog and choose from given choice, Persona 4 is a JRPG, which have complicated, well-built RPG gameplay and even have VN style dating sims. VN doesn't have much loyal fan and mostly played by otaku alone. while Persona 4, a great and famous JRPG that have much bigger loyal fanbase, played by normal people and gamer, not otaku alone so when they see their favourite game get an anime adaption, they will get curious and buy it even when they never seen anime before, that alone enough to boost the sales.

Visual novel fans are some of the most obsessive collectors in fandom. It just doesn't usually translate over to anime, which is part of my point.

But who buys the vast majority of anime DVD/BD? Anime in Japan is not well-priced for the casual buyer. Persona 4, assuming it's 8 or 9 discs (only 7 are solicited so far), retails for about ¥60000-67000 or about $750-875.

and because of otaku buy so much expensive disc that they can't afford to buy every anime adaption of their favourite VN. and have you played Persona 4? it a JPRG that get 8+ score in almost every game website and known by all JPRG gamer, those gamer have much more money to spend than your usual otaku. don't forget that Persona 4 considered one of the best JRRG ever made. look at this. 11/47 game website give 10/10, 26/47 give 9.0->9.8, 7/47 give 8.0->8.8, only 3/47 give 6.8->7.6

If every Persona 4 fan in Japan thought the anime were as shit as some people here feel, it wouldn't be selling anywhere near this much.

most people who consider Persona 4 anime shit are people who haven't play the game. as a Persona 4 player myself, i think the anime really good and would buy it if i have a chance. and look at Persona 4 forum here, animesuki thread and ATLUS forum, most of people there have played the game and think the anime is a really good adaption

EDIT:

It's true that P4 sold more than 40k in the first volume

but I believe the 2nd and 3rd only sold 20-30k

And with amount of fanbase that its already have, it should be able to sell more

I guess Seiji Kishi combined with AIC are not a good combination

(I heard there is also a lot of problem during the production period)

This is unprovable. It's not possible to calculate the sales a show "should" get.

you can say P4 (or F/Z) was the most anticipated anime last fall due to the strong fanbase they already had.

It's true that we cannot calculate how much 1 show should sell.
considering large hardcore fanbase its had, it should be able to do better (in v2, 3, ...).

lack of 'eyecandy' animation might turn the gamefans and a lot of people off, that is might one of many reasons why there is so significance drop from v1 to v2

jmal said:
I'm guessing the production committee might not agree. It's always possible that a different creative staff could have made more. And it's just as possible they could have sold less.

what I'm saying is, there is a rumour that a lot of animators quit during the pre-production of P4
and the result is you can see a lot of people complain about the animation quality
why are they quit again? I can only think there are problems between them (animators) with the Director (Seiji) or the Studio itself (AIC)

jmal said:
In any event, debating whether a show would have sold 30k or 35k or 40k or 45k is very much splitting hairs. It's already unquestionably in mega-smash-hit, top-5(orbetter)-sales-of-the-year territory at any of those numbers.

yeah P4 is definitely gonna grab at least top 5 position in terms of sell in 2012 (currently on 3 with Nise and F/Z in the 2nd and 3rd position respectively)

this is some BS that you randomly spat out

P4 selling better than Sengoku Basara adaptation that its game sell much better than P4 game.

And have you ever heard Tales of Abyss anime adaptation sales?
Its barely selling.. and the anime produced by Sunrise and have larger fanbase than Persona. So that argument about adaptation source popularity determine the anime adaptation success just trash down to toilet. The fan must like it too if they buying, they would not buy random ass adaptation such like Majikoi anime, but I'm sure Majikoi anime can sell a lot better if got treatment that Clannad or Steins; gate get.

Watch out for Natsuiro Kiseki. Its got some serious talent behind it (director of FMA, script writer of Cowboy Bebop, series compositioner of Monster, character design of Railgun), yet its a moe show. I don't think it'll be just a normal moe show with that kinda talent though... so I'm thinking that might be one of the big hits of the year.
