You've never watched YouTube quite like this: today the company began rolling out support for higher video frame rates like 60fps. We've seen movie trailers and other special clips appear with higher fps counts before, but now it works for regular user uploads, too. To see the smoother motion, you'll need to be watching in either 720p or 1080p HD. Both Chrome and Safari 8 worked fine in our tests, but we're seeing mixed results with mobile browsers. Once you hit play, the difference is immediate and hugely noticeable — especially when you're watching video game footage.

Doesn't seem to work for embeds (generates an error) but I watched it on YT and yeah, it looks nice.

Your eyes can't see 60fps so it's a mute point, what, do you guys have 80HD or somethin? SMH

Nope, I can't go fullscreen through MAL so I always go to youtube. For 720p it just stays loading and at 1080p it gives me an error.

That's what I got on the embed, but YT worked fine for me. /shrug

Pretty sure you're joking, but I'll answer it anyway since a lot of people actually seriously say that the eyes only have a 24 FPS limit or something ridiculous like that.

Yes your eyes can. Eye sight is a constant, not measured in frames. It's measured in light. So even if an image flashes for a time measurement smaller then 1 frame, your eyes can indeed see it because it captured the light that frame provided. Cameras and screens provide an illusion of constant lights through flashing images. But they aren't constants. And that's why 60FPS is indeed smoother then 30FPS. Because there is less intervals between picture frames. As the frames go up, it gets closer to a constant, a constant picture flashes can never reach. But it still provides a smoother experience the closer you get to that constant.

Think of limits to infinity if you ever have taken calculus. Approaching infinity.

Obviously to see these framerate improvements, you need a 60 hertz monitor. This holds true for things like 120 fps requiring a 120 hertz monitor.

See for yourself.

60 FPS requires twice the amount of processing power and twice the bitrate prior when it was 30 FPS. So your computer needs to work twice as hard and your internet has to download twice as much to load that 1080p or 720p video. It may be that your computer and connection can't actually handle it, not that youtube isn't working.

That was kind of cool, but I think I would be the only advocate for a 480p60 option.

Yeah, pretty sure it was. That was the only 1000 option on the video you posted. I went back down to 720 afterwards just to be sure.

Maybe it's just me though, because everyone else seems to be able to tell the difference :/

It works for Firefox, too, if you have media.mediasource.enabled in about:config on "true" (double click) and requested the html5 player, but only for a few videos like this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SRTEXSpcyI

the reason why other 60fps videos don't work, is probably because they are encoded with something FF doesn't understand. See https://www.youtube.com/html5 for the list of supported features.

However, be aware that this media source feature is still experimental and might be buggy.
