Finally got to watch the episode. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even a simple song as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" means a lot to someone who's never played in an ensemble (yes, solo practicing sucks).

I tried to find the pieces that were talked about for the auditions and couldn't find any performances of them, not even Youtube - "Crescent Moon Dance" by Horikawa Namie and "Wind of Provence" by Tanaka Naoki". Anyone else tried to find them?

Romance is starting!

It seems like Kumiko, Reina and Sapphire are all going to get through the auditions.
I'm not sure how Hazuki will go though, her playing seemed pretty ordinary.

I loved the part with the alternate versions of Sapphire.

This episode is mainly for Hazuki. The gang is finding a way so that Hazuki would come to like the tube, the reason is, she wasn't able to experience playing in a real ensemble, like being on the side lines, for the band march she was not able to play, and also Gotou should have said that there was a time that he hated Tubacabra, but is a bit embarrassed to say that to Hazuki. So Kumiko found an idea, and then she and Sapphire-chan play together a small piece (twinkle twinkle little tuba) and Hazuki finaly felt the "ongaku".
4/5.

Thank you. The piece seems kind of choppy - changes themes quickly. It also has a very Leroy Anderson feel to it.

KyoAni's formula for a generic anime:

1. Insert a bunch of girls that may or may not have feelings for each other, keep it dubious at best because gay = bad.

2. Make every heterosexual couple very overt from the start and then proceed to make it canon

3. The gays cry, the homophobes rejoice

^^^wow.

Great episode. It had it's moments of comedy and helping Hazuki find her motivation to play was great. Then they took it a step farther with Shuuichi, wha??? I hope they keep it a side thing between them, or even an unrequited crush. As long as they don't try to force a triangle like, Shuuichi confesses to Kumiko, then that causes bad vibes between her and Hazuki, that's a scenario that happens to often and I think we could do without it.

I also like how Kousaka is not a part of the main group, it makes the here and there encounters between her and Kumiko interesting, and leaves us wondering how their relationship will evolve next.

I would think not right now since the basically met for the first in this episode. Plus we also don't know where this will go. Yes she has the "knight in shining armor" look in her eyes. I won't go as far as seeing a triangle forming...yet.

The storyline is relaxed no rush, made curious in each episode. The music is slowly emerging though not on a large scale.

It seems KyoAni try bring every detail of the intricacies of world music band, to be understood slowly.

I miss the ponytail hair Kumiko as Ui.

Probably because it happened so quickly, and we have no idea who is talking to Kumiko. I'm interested to see where it goes, though.

It has to be an upperclassman who feels they don't have a shot at making into the main 55 member group. The feel that freshmen like Kumiko and Reina are messing up the "natural order" of the group. We all know how Japanese care about their hierarchy.

I think it's fictional made especially for the anime. Wait for the OST, I think it will be included.

You're right. i got this from the Hibike! Wiki
Kitauji's chosen free piece, Namie Horikawa's (堀川奈美恵?) Crescent Moon Dance (三日月の舞?), is from a fictional composer and created for the anime by Akito Matsuda (松田彬人?).

I also found a midi version that someone put together of what the whole piece would sound like. I'd like to now hear a full concert band play this.

Audition is a good and fair idea. If you are crap, good players should not be dragged down as well. Not to mention that it made slackers practise even more.

That short piece of music was real nice and definitely got point across. Tuba does add up to music quiet a bit, definitely motivational.

Some pretty great gags in this episode, with Tuba-kun's being the stand out. Really liked how this week perked up Hazuki a little instead of having her wallow in frustration. Little victories like that simple ensemble are the things that really motivate people.

i guess an instrument like tuba would be pretty boring to play on its own, you really need to play with other instruments to enjoy playing it.

can't wait to see the results of the auditions tbh.

Hazuki has some best gags in this series, first with Tubacabra, now with Ruby & Platinum Diamond Kawashima, it kills me :D

Other than that, very sweet episode. To be honest, I expected to see more of Kousaka, and so far we had very few of her interactions with, well, anyone.

-This show is actually progressing pretty fast
-Easily recognizable reference to one of Aesop's fables
-Sound production is pretty spot on since Kumiko's first try at the audition piece was distinctly more muddled than Asuka's first try, which is in line with Kumiko's verbal description of the skill difference
-KyoAni definitely did their research on the tuba maintenance, but it seems like Hazuki put the wrong slide in the wrong place
-Pretty adorable scene with Green sapphire and Hazuki on the riverside
-Riko and Gotou dropping some sage knowledge on the newbie
-The Tuba-kun costume is actually really creepy
-Kumiko's a pretty good friend, looking out for Hazuki like that
-Yeah, I kinda agree that you couldn't identify the beginner piece Asuka told Hazuki to sight read as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star from the tuba part alone. The scene with Hazuki, Green sapphire, and Kumiko playing the song brought what Gotou said to life, and it was made better by the fact that the viewers could compare the sound of the trio playing to the sound of just Hazuki playing. The trio scene was pretty simple, but it definitely had a lot of significance.

More musical fanservice (as always) as well as some pretty tangible character development for Hazuki made this episode a pretty good watch.

This resonates with me so well. I am a trumpet player and sometimes my tone is horrible and my pitch is off and it makes me think "Damn, I should've just played the clarinet instead." :(

This time, the band members are demanded individual effort. This could lead to trouble, Natsuki implies that she might not make it in, and Aoi is sending mixed messages.

Even with that, Hazuki, Midori and Kumiko find themselves closer to each other than before, while so many of the other members are practicing alone. Their honest efforts to motivate Hazuki fortunately pay off, and this is not a small feat, as it's the disappointing early results that can often prove to be one of the most difficult obstacles in an artist's career. Asuka and Takuya, the former adds a lot of energy to every scene she's in, and the latter has a delightfully soothing voice.

"Are you trying to make me look dumb?" Kumiko might have some leftover demons to deal with from her middle school days after all. This is juxtaposed by the fast turnaround in her attitude towards the band. She is still the same impulsive girl, but she's gaining more and more control now. She even managed to make Reina blush!

Hazuki was really cute this episode! So precious, such a hard worker despite starting from zero. I really respect and admire people who may lack talent but make up for it with determination and hard work.

And it seems Hazuki's really fallen for Shuuichi. To be honest, I expected him to like Kumiko, and maybe he does. But we'll see!

Really many things happen during this episode: the interpersonal bond between Midori, Kumiko and Katou is strengthened, especially between Midori and Hazuki, the same between Kumiko and Reina, the love issue also seems to go on, likewise the group as a whole seems to be more close-knit, while the story advances and moves to a new goal. Formidable drawings and animations, animations fabulous in their fluidity. Beautiful backgrounds. Asuka's character is very funny in his dialogues.

Maybe it’s because it’s 3am and I’m half awake, but this one felt a little meh to me. That twinkle twinkle little star was nice and sweet though.

Animation is of course a key aspect to, well, anime, but for me it hasn’t been that big of a deal as long as the story is compelling. But every so often you come across an anime keeps you watching BECAUSE of the animation; perhaps it being so good that the story might even take a back seat. Demon slayer would not have been what it is without its stellar visuals. I’m beginning to think this is the case with this anime, while it’s a nice story so far, I think 60% of what keeps me going here is actually the animation. It’s just so beautiful, as to be expected from Kyoto animation.
