Definitely disturbing. Probably the mix of innocent looking loli and insane violence. Actually..everything was creepy about that show...even the op was kinda scary.

Expecially the Rena with blood on her hands..

Most disturbing would have to be Beating angel Dokoru-chan. Alot of underwear shots and blood and senseless killing just to get revived again. But it was really funny.

Thanks to Iri for the awesome Signature!! ^^

Most disturbing? Hmmm, Elfen Lied, Berserk, and Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni are the primary ones that come to mind.

I found Requiem from the Darkness to be a little disturbing.

I agree with those who said Elfin Lied. I thought that anime was very disturbing and gruesome. I haven't seen some of these other animes people are listiing, and no other series really comes to mind when i think about it.

Gantz was disturbing but i saw it before Eflen Lied. Eflen Lied was VERY disturbing at first...but i got used to the gore.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is disturbing but in a "good" way in that it made me look at life and humans...sort of put me in a "shock" situation.

I'd have to say Higurashi was the most disturbing anime I've ever seen. Elfen Lied was pretty gory, more so than Higurashi, but not really disturbing IMO... And Paranoia Agent was pretty disturbing too I guess.

disturbing can be on diffrent levels.

for example Neon Genesis Evangelion was pretty funky for its dynamic Mecha moves. It just stirred mecha world

for violence I think Elfenlied and gantz both deserve credits
as for drama I think Kimi ga nozomu eien earns a number one position. This one really was pretty heavy to see all main chars in a downwards negative spiral.

also I would like to mention Grave of the fireflies, really impressive how this movie can play with human emotion.

Is an Anime disturbing if you have a nightmare because of it? xD
Because I had a nightmare after seeing a videoclip of all violent, bloody scenes of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, made by a friend of mine xDD

There was once an anime channel on my country that repeated the same series over and over AND OVER again... and the «trailers» for them...

... one of those was "Akira". It was awful! It gave me nightmares.

Maybe "Petshop of Horrors" was kind of like that too.

I think I'm most disturbed when there's gore that's just for the sake of gore; I can cope with it better if it's for a good reason. One particular offender I can recall is this rubbish old OVA called Angel Cop. It basically went in for being as nasty to everyone as possible, like for example at one point the cops, the heroine's comrades, rot a guy's forearm off to get him to talk. Most of the characters were messily, painfully and usually helplessly dead by the end. I thought Elfen Lied was guilty of this sort of behaviour too, overemphasising the cruel and gruesome for no very good reason.

And yes, Akira. the stuffed toys that bleed milk, plus Tetsuo's arm/mutation at the end. Messed up doodoo, to put it politely.

Plus Urotsukidoji...my friend made me sit through that, going "You'll like this, it's really good". He is no longer my friend. That WAS a factor. Stuff like Night Shift Nurses, that's somehow a different kettle of fish; it's disturbing, but it's not like it's really trying to tell a story, the story is just an excuse for having the disturbing stuff that some people find sexy, for some reason. Urotsukidoji I cannot believe is found sexy by anyone, anywhere, ever, so it comes off as more disturbing to me.

Perfect Blue. Not only disturbing but also confusing as hell.

Next would be Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.

I never found Elfen Lied to be all that disturbing besides the dog beating, Mariko's past, and the main character's sister getting blow in half. Other than that, the endless splirts of blood annoyed me to heck.

I think Akira is a great anime, though it is really ... erm, weird sometimes. In that point, I think it's a little disturbing: this is the only anime that made me actually scared when I watched it. Makes it a good anime in my eyes... Have it on DVD, or actually, my MOM has it on DVD XD

A real disturbing anime for me is Elfen Lied. Overuse of blood and nude, it already starts in the opening. Is one of the anime I dropped after two episodes. I really didn't like it. Akira is even better with the use of blood -.-

I'm sure you know why.

Anyways I have to mention Midori - Shoujo Tsubaki. A shemale smashing a puppies skull by slamming the cute pup to the floor and killing another by stepping on it. Then the imagine of the squashed puppy transitions to a pot of bowling stew. Mhhh Mhhh.
There is more disturbing scenes that take place, but you can see for yourself.

hmmm I agree with a lot of these disturbing animes but I'll say one that's kinda unexpected. . . Shakugan no Shana. I thought the concept of fading away and not being remembered at all was pretty disturbing. It's probably just me. I mean dying is one thing, but I would never want to be forgotten.
