Layton Kyouju to Eien no Utahime

Professor Hershel Layton—renowned archaeologist, puzzle-solver, and extraordinary gentleman—and his young aspiring apprentice Luke Triton receive a mysterious letter from his former student Janice Quatlane containing tickets to an opera at the Crown Petone. They soon discover that it is no ordinary opera, but rather a devious game for the legendary Fountain of Youth—the giver of eternal life. However, this only scratches the surface of an unfolding mystery that the pair must solve together in order to survive.

I generally love anything Professor Layton-related, and this movie isn't the exception. It's an excellent example of what film adaptations of video games should be like. It manages to capture everything there is to love about the Layton games while being original and telling a new story.

Firstly, the plot is nicely executed. It seems simple enough at the start, but it soon develops into something far more intriguing. It gives the feeling one would expect from a Layton game. Although it's quite short - just an hour and a half -, the story feels whole. Plus it features the classic Layton characters everyone knows and ... loves.

What's more, the film manages to include the puzzle-solving dynamics in a way that doesn't seem forced or overly artificial. It was difficult for me to imagine how could they include such a vital aspect of the games in a movie - in which the viewers could not interact -, but it didn't disappoint. Overall, I have nothing negative to say about this work.

I also want to briefly mention the soundtrack, which is excellent as always. A classic.

In conclusion, I would highly recommend watching this movie. It's entertaining, engaging, and perfectly captures the essence of the Layton games universe. I would even recommend it to those who are interested but have never played or viewed any Layton games/media.

Very solid installment. More video game movies should be exactly like this. While it is weaker than the usual Layton game, its great as a 1 hour and 30 minute movie. the fact they crammed such a great story in that short time span says a lot. Although, Descole was a weak antagonist, and i kinda wish they did more with Emmy, other than her just kicking peoples asses. Luke and Layton are a amazing duo as usual though, and the story was well presented, alongside with the superb ost. The artstyle also smoothed into anime quite well. I also loved the way they presented ... the puzzles into anime form. All in all, great video game movie, and more should be like this. You can tell a lot of heart went into this. 8.5/10

How do you appropriately adapt a game into a film? The UK/US market have been highly unsuccessful, but this adaptation shows the key to making a good video game film- a love of the source.
Layton Kyouju to Eien no Utahime, aka Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, was my first flirty encounter of films from groups other than Ghibili. Since childhood I have been a passionate fan of the games, and I feel that passion came from the creators. The soundtrack of this film, the key focus, is perfect, inflicting nostalgia within each piece- that includes the original key score!
Nostalgia is nurtured inside the heart, ... growing with each recollection of a scene or song. It blooms into a fond memory you frame and cherish. To anyone who has ever played the game the songs are instantly recognisable. The music box puzzle song, the haunting violins that swoop in victory and curl your toes in delight. If the games soundtrack (aka The Curious Village) would be called the CD album, the film plays with the vinyl. The rich sounds, the beautiful vocals, the haunting melodies. Professor Layton is a series built on its puzzles, it's true- but the movie understood that the atmosphere that comes with the orchestra was the key.
As it is based on a puzzle game, you have to look at the puzzles presented in the film. The first puzzle on the ship teases you delightfully with logic, tugging at the strings of your heart, tiptoes up the ridges of your spine. True, the puzzles are easy to solve, but even so you feel triumphant.
The story compliments the Layton name, it is delightfully ridiculous and so gloriously extravagant that you recall the absurd plotlines of the game series, the strange meanders and twists. While it's not the most complicated plot, it serves alongside the other elements to highlight the key focus.
If, somehow someway, you haven't played one of the games or watched the film, go play it. Let it sit, crawl into the recesses of the mind and the heart, burn into your memory until that warm feeling rises with the crescendo of the violins. Then watch this film.
