How relevant is it?

I watched the movie without any prior experience with the games and I made it through alright. It's about the same as watching a One Piece or Lupin the Third movie without having prior knowlege of those. It's really easy to get a feel for the characters.

Plus, I believe it's based on a prequel game or something, so there's no real continuity (as far as I know).

I've played the first three games and no it isn't really relevant to play the games. You may enjoy it more because you know some of the characters better but there isn't any character history coming up in the movie.
