Synopsis

In the future, water has covered much of the Earth due to the effects of global warming. The orphaned Maia Mizuki, 15, just graduated from middle school and has already applied for employment in the elite paramilitary Ocean Agency, part of the futuristic world government. Only the best, most intelligent, and physically fit students are eligible for admission. Maia, the series' protagonist, is set to become one of the few.

But her ideal life quickly falls apart. To her disappointment, Maia unexpectedly fails her entrance exams. Making matters worse, she promptly gets evicted from her house, pick pocketed, taken hostage, then shot. She is "saved" by two women (Rena and Shizuka) that are part of an unorthodox help-for-hire organization called Nereids (inspired by the Greek mythological Nereids ). With nowhere to go, Maia joins up with Nereids, taking jobs from capturing wanted criminals to chasing stray cats, often with unexpected results. Gloria and Yu later join up with Nereids.

"Daphne" in the title refers to a subplot that starts midway into the series and eventually become important to Maia. "Brilliant Blue" refers to the fact that this is a world covered by water with almost no land. The world consists of vast oceans, a few islands, and floating cities.

The first thought that came to mind when I passed this series at SunCoast, was "Holy Jesus, are they even wearing clothes?" And continued walking. A year or so later, I found out that Geneon was stopping production of their DVDs and I scrambled to get as much stuff released by the company. So, I grabbed all 7 volumes for 40 bucks off Amazon, and have not regretted it since.

Daphne in the Brilliant Blue turned out to be a very enjoyable series to watch. I must point out that the artwork is very fresh and original. When you've watched series after series, and so on, read more

Daphne in the Brilliant Blue is really a hidden treasure amongst anime. This series was a pure enjoyment, from beginning to end. So on to the review...

Story! Like the title suggests everything in this anime revolves around the sea. In (not so) distant future people are living in mega-hi-tech cities that resurfaced from the ocean floor when Earth recuperated from pollution and could once more sustain life on the surface. In one of this cities live our main protagonist Maia Mizuki who has a case of amnesia and as story unfolds begins a quest for discovering her past. She and her female friends trough series read more

Holy cow! Are Daphne in the Brilliant Blue and Agent Aika lame excuses for panty shows? Lets find out!

Pantyshots in every scene? check!
Little or no plot? check!
Girls or young women running around in useless costums and lingerie? check!
Bad story? check!
Women doing things that aren't natural for women to do like being physically and emotionally strong, gutsy, doing stunts that are impossible even for a man, while acting macho? check!
Splashy action scenes? check!
Lots of weird or make-believe vehicles? check!
Lame humor? check!
Overly simplified art? check!
Overly emphasized buttcracks and nipples? check!
A catastrophic event leaving most of Earth under water? check!
Women walking down the street half naked and wearing extremely provactive clothing while at work on a daily basis? check!

Bad acting + weak storyine + simply art but overly emphasized nipples & buttcracks + no real plot = lame excuse for a panty show.
