Tezuka Osamu no Buddha: Akai Sabaku yo! Utsukushiku
Movie, 2011, 1 ep Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Siddhartha Gautama (South Asia | 6/5th Century BC)

An adaptation of Tezuka Osamu's series Buddha, which itself is a staple text in Buddhist temples for teaching young people about the Buddha's life.
Kingdom
TV, 2012, 38 eps Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Warring States Period (China | 475–221 BC)

This show seems reasonably accurate to real events of the warring states period in China. Many characters based on real figures, most notably Ying Zheng, who is Qin Shi Huang (who unified China in 221BC, and became the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty).
Vinland Saga
TV, 2019, 24 eps Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Viking activity in the British Isles (UK | 789-1066)

Appears to be reasonably accurate to real viking activity within Britain in the early middle ages, with added fictional plot. Protagonist appears to be based on Thorfinn Karlsefni, and the show features real life figures such as Cnut (Canute).
Heike Monogatari
TV, 2022, 11 eps Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Genpei War (Japan | 1180–1185)

Appears to be a somewhat supernatural twist on the Tale of Heiki (平家物語), an epic account of the struggle between the Taira and Minamoto. The epic is referenced by many scholars of Japanese history and the samurai. Features real historical figures, and accuracy of the actual plot is likely as dubious as the original tale itself.
Genji
OVA, 1992, 2 eps Me:- Author:8
Genpei War (Japan | 1180–1185)

Another anime that takes place primarily during the war between the Taira and Minamoto. This time with added time travel. The main character ends up time travelling back into the period of civil war, and his uncanny resemblance to the deceased Yoritomo allows for the Minamoto clan to continue on as if he never died. Features real historical figures but with events edited for the sake of a romance plot and the fact Yoritomo is technically still alive.
Angolmois: Genkou Kassenki
TV, 2018, 12 eps Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Mongol Invasion of Tsushima (Japan | 1274)

Appears to be a reasonably accurate portrayal of the mongol invasion of Japan.
Ikkyuu-san
TV, 1975, 296 eps Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Ikkyuu (Japan | 1394-1481)

Based on the early life of Zen Buddhist monk Ikkyuu. Cannot speak for accuracy as I have not seen it.
Baraou no Souretsu
TV, 2022, 24 eps Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Richard "III" Plantagenet (1452-1485)
Wars of the Roses (1455-1487)

Appears to be a sensationalist retelling of the life of Richard III of England, and the dynastic wars of the roses. Pretty much has the British historical drama treatment in its dramatic nature and liberalism with historical accuracy from what I can see. Features very real historical figures though and has a clear basis in real events.
Sengoku Basara
TV, 2009, 12 eps Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Sengoku Period (Japan | 1467-1638)

Features real Sengoku characters, but inconsistencies with real history are played for plot purposes. Features highly fictional battles, but may be based on genuine history. Will comment further once watched.
Kochouki: Wakaki Nobunaga
TV, 2019, 12 eps Me:- Author:8
Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582)

Focuses on the life of Nobunaga from his teenage years into adulthood as a warlord. Features real events and figures, reasonable accuracy but plays with details for the sake of a compelling story. Interesting starting point for those intrigued by sengoku history.
Yasuke
ONA, 2021, 6 eps Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Yasuke (Africa/Japan | DOB unk. Active 1579-1582)

A focus on the Black African retainer of Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period. Cannot confirm accuracy.
Versailles no Bara
TV, 1979, 40 eps Me:- Author:9
Marie Antoinette (1755-1793)
French Revolution (1789-1799)

An exploration of the life of Marie Antoinette, with the focus on a fictional protagonist. A reasonably accurate portrayal of the events of the french revolution, with some fictional plot and characters for storytelling purposes. The show is a pretty comprehensive look at France's political and social climate at the time, told through a shoujo anime lense.
Sarusuberi: Miss Hokusai
Movie, 2015, 1 ep Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Katsushika Oei (1800-1866)

Movie is based on the life of real life Ukiyo-e artist known as Ei-jo. Cannot currently comment on accuracy.
Ling Feng Zhe
ONA, 2019, 7 eps Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Karl Marx (Prussia/Germany | 1818-1883)

Chinese donghua focused on the life of Karl Marx. Features real life figures Friedrich Engels and Jenny von Westphalen. Often claimed to be propaganda, so cannot currently comment on accuracy.
Kaze Tachinu
Movie, 2013, 1 ep Me:- Author:6
Jiro Horikoshi (Japan | 1903-1982)

Horikoshi was the real life chief engineer of many Japanese fighter planes used in WWII. While the exploration of his work and designs seems reasonably accurate, most of the details of his personal life seen in the film are fictional additions.
Anne no Nikki
Movie, 1995, 1 ep Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Anne Frank (Prussia/Germany/Netherlands | 1929-1945)

Appears to be a faithful adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank, the published diary of young Jew Anne Frank during her time hiding from the Nazi forces in Amsterdam.
Zipang
TV, 2004, 26 eps Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Battle of Midway (Pacific Ocean Theater | 1942)

A time travel work, but included since the majority of the plot appears to take place in the real life Battle of Midway, fought between Japan and the US six months after the Pearl Harbor attack. May have an alternate ending to history, so cannot currently comment on accuracy.
Hotaru no Haka
Movie, 1988, 1 ep Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Bombing of Kobe (Japan | 1945)

Characters and events appear to be almost fully fictional, but the movie is based during the firebombing of Kobe in 1945. Also to note, the film is based on a semi-autobiographical short story.
Hadashi no Gen
Movie, 1983, 1 ep Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Hiroshima Atomic Bombing (Japan | 1945)

Based on the real life bombing of Hiroshima with the "Little Boy" atomic bomb. Characters and plot seem to be completely fictional additions.
Hetalia Axis Powers
ONA, 2009, 52 eps Me:- Author:7
History N/A (Features multiple events)

An anthropomorphisation of the nations of the world. While Hetalia is primarily a comedy based in cultural sterotypes, it does explore several real life historical events. Season 1 (Axis Powers) focuses mostly on WWII, and later seasons explore a variety of historical battles, politics and alliances.
Neko Neko Nihonshi
TV, 2016, 32 eps Me:- Author:-
NOT WATCHED / CANNOT CONFIRM

Miscellaneous Japan

Re-imagining of key Japanese figures as cats.
