Scores are half based on how much I enjoyed a show and half based on factors like animation, characters, story, and inventiveness.
10-Basically perfect. A show I wouldn't mind watching over and over. I have a strong connection to this show due to emotional moments, characters or animation.
9- A nearly flawless show. This is an anime that I love but there are a few things that prevent it from being a 10.
8- A super solid and polished show. I enjoyed this anime from start to finish. This may also be a perfect show that was hampered by a major factor or arc.
7- A "good" show. This can be an anime that was amazing but was brought down by a couple major factors or an average anime that was enhanced by great emotional scenes or good arcs.
6- A better than average show. Overall, this show was worth watching. I "liked" it but there were several things that made it less enjoyable or fun than it could have been.
5- An average show. This anime had equal good and bad things about it. This can also be a show I found boring with a couple great factors or key scenes.
4- A meh show. I found this anime boring or hard to get through. There were good parts to the anime but it paled in comparison to the overall mediocrity of the show.
3- A bad show. An anime that fails on the fundamental level. I found this anime painful to watch or super boring.
1-2 I currently do not have any shows ranked as this. I imagine they would be an absolute dumpster fire. A show that fails in every regard possible or makes me ashamed to be an anime watcher.
While I can certainly say that Sonny Boy is not for everyone being an Art House type of anime. It was certainly far from boring for me, as it kept feeding me the bread crumbs I needed to figure out what the "Drifting" is and ultimately the message of the story.
I'm going to assume that you had finished the anime?
So the "Drifting" is a combination of Mizuho's Cat's power of creation (Technically copying) and Nagara's "teleport" / "hopping" power. So essentially Nagara created the world and Mizuho's Cat's created copies of their entire class in this new world.
This space Nagara created is infinitely expanding alternate universe that had multiple "worlds ( the School in black void of nothingness, Hateno Island, the various other portals to different worlds inside the school that Nagara checks at the end of Ep 12)
You later learn that the space Nagara created crosses time as well ( Start of EP7 and EP 8 with the Dog's backstory)
The Dog was a student from the future that attended the same school Nagara and his class did. So there are multiple students from different time periods that have been "Drifted".
So what the hell is this convoluted as hell setting trying to tell me? It's trying to tell you a coming of age story of adolescence struggling with growing up and facing life. Throughout the entirety of the anime you see multiple characters in some way shape or form partaking in escapism. Cap early on going on a power trip once they found out about their power. Asakaze proclaiming that in THIS world he was a chosen one. Ep 3, multiple classmates becoming black statues (Essentially they've just given up on trying to interact with society / their classmates). I can go on but I think you get it.
After 12 episodes of world hopping and philosophical self discovery, Nagara and Mizuho decide that they want to stop running away from their problems and "Return Home" thus facing their uncertain futures into adult hood. (Getting a job, paying rent ) Nagara coming to accept that he's now ordinary, that he can't change the world, but despite that he can still work for a better future.
"Our lives are only beginning. What lies ahead will take just a little bit longer." - Nagara
And there you have it, that's Sonny Boy.
I really hope you don't ask me about War, that's a whole philosophical trip on its own
Oh dude, the emotions I felt when "Shounen Shoujo (少年少女)" by GING NANG BOYZ played at the end of episode 12 was unreal.
The "It's not so bad here" really hurt me.
Nice to meet you! At this point, most people consider myself as a historian with the amount of anime lodged in my brain. Currently watching through the entirety of Macross.
Ah yes MHA. Like all long running Shounen, it has it's high's and lows. Season 5 really hit a low bar for me, it started off with a recap episode then into an episode reintroducing the class 1A Characters and their powers. The entire first cour of that season was quite jarringly paced and their mini tournament against class 1B was just uninteresting. They got to show off class 1B's powers I guess but eh. It only got good during the Villain's Arc which they ended up rushing through.
Personally, I believe it peaked on Season 2 during the tournament arc and had just been downhill from there. Season 3 was decent with the introduction of the "Big 3" and the Yakuza. The main thing that knocked it for me was how they decided to shaft Mirio's fight with Overhaul into a slideshow.
Anyway's, if you ever want to talk anime feel free to send me a message. I'm semi-active, only really get on whenever I finish something.
Thanks! Yes, I enjoyed writing the parallels in terms of the quote hahah It is not like they are equivalent shows, but doing generic template praising provide such potential
Hello, sure I can do that, but should prolly preface that there is also a method to the construction- when you get to a certain point it becomes hard to whittle down to ten, so I instead opted to not just show things I hold in high-regard, but also showcase my variety of genre tastes. Like I don't have EVA on there, but that's like my favorite ever, right? I try to encourage discussion so glad to see it worked
1) Maison Ikkoku - 10/10- classic, long running rom'com, amazing music and characters- Otonashi Kyouko found herself on my fav's after this
2) Aikatsu - 10/10 across each season, one of the highest rated franchises on my list. Amazing music, amazing heart, and very pure idol show
3) Perfect Blue - 10/10 psychological thriller, I love the scene composition and atmosphere
4) Slayers Return - 8/10, hilarious prequel to a series I hold dear; chose this one because I genuinely thought the movie was gold and I like the cover art for Return, its cute
5) Smile Precure - 10/10, I love Precure generally, but this was my first and remains my all time favorite cast- good vibe checks and high stakes
6) Monogatari S2 - 10/10, genuinely love the Monogatari series as a whole, but this one particularly stands out as the 'feels' and 'ohhhh' moments
7) Kimagure Orange Road movie - 9/10, staggering sequel to a good classic rom'com series; this movie is very isolated and has one of the most notable uses of soundscape and silence I've enjoyed. Very intense finale
8) Joshiraku - 9/10, very specific kind of humor, but this one had me laughing a lot- its cynical and parody, Kumeta's humor is great. Classic ED song too
9) Uma Musume S2 - 9/10, honestly its a 9.5/10- an emotional rollercoaster that had one of the most satisfying moments of anime catharsis
10) Project A-ko - 7/10, more an homage to this being one of the first anime I've ever seen, but its also a nostalgic blast- love how crazy it is
After writing that, I decided to put it in a spoiler so its not just this massive chunk of text; gave a general idea of my reasonings, and I can do the same for the manga if you like
Yeah dude, Odd Taxi was great, the writing is so good! High School of the Dead is such a dumb fun show, really enjoyed watching it. Lastly, I cannot believe how much Pokémon you've watched. Quite a feat.
oh yeah for sure the funny parts were amazing. Ik it makes sense for her to be annoying I just couldn’t bring myself to overlook it early on haha, later she got better tho. Lucky Star is def more mundane than Nichijou but that’s kinda why I enjoyed it. I also love all of the references in it. Haruhi movie is top 10 for me. The show is very good too but one specific arc is awful. Clannad was a new type of pain lmao
thanks for accepting :) Yeah I loved Nichijou most of it was a 9-10 for me but Hakase annoyed me the first half haha. I like the older kyoani stuff like Haruhi and Lucky Star.
I also see you’re watching Odd Taxi, I loved that show
ah, alright. I agree with you on that. I was just wondering because higurashi season 2 is definitely better and solves all the mysteries in the first season. Thanks. Lol I've never watched bleach or fairy tail either.
nooo, don't make me feel even more bad than I already am. I have a funny gif of it on my bio but I always feel so guilty when someone brings it or the show up because I haven't seen it yet lol. Lol that's not a hot take, a lot of people found it a bit long and boring but I personally loved it for what it was. Character development and story was at its peak there.
I noticed you watched the first season of higurashi. Why'd you ignored the second?
uhh yes it does matter lol. Because odd taxi is in my favourites and is one of the most underwatched anime of all time. I gave that a 10 so I hope you enjoy it. Favourite anime is probably hxh. Have you watched it? It's really good. Characters and soundtrack is phenomenal. Story is really good as well. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it yet. wbu?
