Take note that when it comes to every genre and whether I like them or not, I have a personal motto regarding them: "There is always an exception". Just because I say that a certain genre is my least favorite, it doesn't mean that I automatically hate ALL of the shows categorized as part of said genre. Odds are that there's at least one show within that less preferable genre that I really do like and would watch it again someday. Also, just because I hold a certain genre as being my favorite, it doesn't mean I will love every single show that's a part of said genre. That said, here are the genres that I usually enjoy or typically enjoy less:
Favorite Genres:
Mecha
Fantasy
Action/Adventure
Science Fiction
Shounen
Romance (Must have good chemistry between characters)
"Love 'em or Hate 'em" Genres:
Comedy (Hate when there's NOTHING ELSE BUT comedy)
Seinen/Mature (The man in me loves Seinen, but the kid in me loves Shounen. It's a never-ending battle!)
Drama (Don't keep kicking a puppy and I'll watch it)
Slice of Life (Must have unique and ongoing plotlines and don't feel too episodic or unchanging)
Ecchi (Don't be creepy or predictable. Instead, be funny and clever about the fanservice)
Least Favorite Genres:
Sports (Almost no exceptions. Only if there was more to the show than sports)
Historical (Exceptions: must have something new to the history that makes it fun or I will almost definitely get bored watching)
Various types of Shoujo (Exceptions: shows that are VERY unique to anime/manga in general, are not too "girly", and aren't filled with an overload of underdeveloped "pretty boy" characters... unless they're like the guys from Ouran Host Club because that show is hilarious)
Horror (Exceptions: I like suspenseful mystery shows like Another. Not scary shows with jump scares and no chances of the characters escaping)
How I Rate Anime/Manga
I tend to review anime and manga slightly differently than the traditional 1-10 rating scale method. While things such as an anime's soundtrack, characters, and art-style/animation do help structure and improve my ratings, I really give major points to certain particular aspects which some "professional" (read: REALLY critical) reviewers might overlook. These aspects include:
1. The story, including the main and overarching storylines, as well as its potential to expand and become more interesting (i.e. Naruto and One Piece, regardless of their faults, have huge worlds of possibility and stories that make you want to find out more about the characters and the world... so long as there is a point and not having multiple, consecutive, big-lipped-alligator-moment filler arcs. And just to clear up a far too common misconception: Just because something isn't from the original source material, that doesn't mean it's filler! Some of them give additional character development and relations, some help explain how the world operates or expand upon previously given information, and some even help make certain plot points/storylines even better! Just look at Hinata Hyuga from Naruto! When facing Pain, the manga just made her a seem like a forced in plot point while in the anime she actually put up a good, well animated fight against Pain and introduced her strongest abilities LONG before the manga even acknowledged them!) 2. The overall quality of the aspects/goals of the show/manga that the creators were aiming to accomplish. Whether or not most people's opinions would be that such aspects are secondary or less interesting is only the preference of the viewer and don't ultimately determine if something is "bad", just whether or not it's popular or not (i.e. Highschool Of The Dead aimed to be a show that mainly wanted to be as over the top as possible in its action and fanservice before anything else. I don't care if it's far from Shakespearean writing or really perverted; it accomplished a lot of what it was trying to be and what it was trying to do while still being enjoyable to me). 3. The show's ending and amount of closure. As YouTube reviewer GRArkada says: "The ending of a story is paramount". If a show doesn't give a satisfying ending or AT LEAST some sort of good stopping point, it's gonna hurt on my ratings regardless if the show was good or not (i.e. Season 1 of Haruhi Suzumiya had a REALLY BAD ending if you watched the episodes in chronological order and hurt its score on my rating scale). 4. The most important thing of all to me: My own personal enjoyment throughout it all. It doesn't matter if something is "stupid" or "flawed"; if I had an absolute blast watching/reading it then it has accomplished it's goal of entertaining me as a viewer (i.e. Sword Art Online's second half of the anime had many problems and affected my rating but nonetheless I still enjoyed the series overall enough to give it a good rating).
Rating Scale
As I said before, my rating scale is far from the traditional 1-10 scale. My scores all tend to be high but each rating represents different things in how I saw the show/manga. Here's how I usually rate anime/manga on my lists:
If the score is 1-5: Good luck ever seeing these ratings. These scores mean I was forced to watch/read something against my own will. The subjects rated these are all absolutely and usually equally terrible and I would never recommend them to anyone. The lower the score represents how much I suffered. If the score is 6: Be careful when watching things rated with this. Anime and manga scored with this are shows that have multiple glaring issues regardless of how many good qualities they have or are really, really, REALLY boring. I rate things with this when my own personal enjoyment and interest was put to the test and somehow made it through (or perhaps mind control or Stockholm Syndrome is in play o_O), usually after taking a long break from watching them. Only the real hardcore fans of certain genres or tropes should watch these, or it could be that it's a decent show that I couldn't get myself pumped watching beyond acting out of some self-perceived obligation. If the score is 7: Here is where some of the good stuff starts to come in. Anime and manga rated with this score are usually held somewhere between the lines of "good" and "bad" (...so it's "meh"? That sounds too negative :P). Subjects with this score can be enjoyable to watch but they DO have some problems that even I couldn't help but notice. These problems don't ruin the show (far from it) but they did affect my personal enjoyment/interest enough to keep it from being 8 or higher. Give them a try before deciding whether you like them or not and you might just find something here you enjoy. I'd recommend these shows to those who are fans to a particular genre or to those who are just getting into anime/manga. If the score is 8: This is the score you would probably see on most of the anime/manga I've completed. Subjects with this score were anime/manga that I enjoyed watching with little to no regret. Most of these are on average real solid shows, others either being really great shows that I might have liked a little less or shows with flaws that I overlooked enough to bump up from 7. I'll recommend these shows to most people, unless they are genres that a certain someone doesn't like. If the score is 9: Anything with this score is chock full of awesome! These aren't just your run-of-the-mill shows or even just good in general. There are only two or three aspects of the show/manga that keep this from being a perfect score. That or they are considered the best by most others but my own personal preference just keeps me from loving them the same way. These are things you'll be willing to watch/read again in the future and are worth a buy should the chance come. I'll recommend these shows to almost anyone, even those who haven't really seen a lot of anime/manga. If the score is 10: These are the best of the best! Either they are the perfect anime/manga or that my own personal enjoyment is so great that it disregards anything that is "wrong" or "flawed" with them. Watch these as soon as possible and buy them when you can! Why are you still reading this and not getting these masterpieces!? Go forth, my minions! This mad scientist commands you to enlighten yourself this instant! El. Psy. Congroo.
Lowest Rated / Most Hated Anime
Glasslip (Rating: 5): I'd tell you to wake me when something happens during the show, but uh... then I'd never wake up. Why make this, P.A. Works? You're far better than this!
Naruto: Movie 3 - Dai Koufun! Mikazuki Jima no Animaru Panikku Dattebayo! (Rating: 5): Even by Naruto standards, this movie was ridiculous in the bad way. The new characters were annoying and the villains were idiots who apparently can't dodge an overweight civilian who's carrying a teenager on his shoulders who's carrying another child on HIS shoulders. Shame that this movie sucks since it's one of the few times Sakura ever has a shining moment in the series.
Pokemon Advanced Generation: Rekkuu no Houmonsha Deoxys (Rating: 5): Arguably the most boring of all the Pokemon movies. The legendary Pokemon are cool and all, but the rest of the movie nearly made me fall asleep. Mouryou no Hako was more exciting, and half of that series was just three guys sitting at a table talking about boxes!
Pokemon: Bokutachi Pichu Brothers - Party wa Oosawagi! no Maki (Rating: 5): Same reason as with the Deoxys movie, only this Pokemon Channel special doesn't even have legendary Pokemon. Glad I only rented the game out of sheer nostalgia for the game Hey You, Pikachu and didn't buy it.
Gyo (Rating: 5): I thought this was going to be a comedy! Why wouldn't you assume it was a comedy when the story is about evil fish on mechanical walkers turning people into fish zombies!? At least it provided me with an awesome pic to send to friends during Shark Week.
OreImo Season 2 Specials (Rating: 5): I REJECT YOUR ENDING AND SUBSTITUTE IT WITH MY OWN! I WILL STAY ON THE S.S. KURONEKO, EVEN IF I MUST SINK WITH IT!!!
Bacterial Contamination (Rating: 4): NOPE. NOPE. ALL THE NOPES IN THE WORLD. (Song wasn't even that good compared to Miku's other hits)
Byston Well Monogatari: Garzey no Tsubasa (Rating: 3): Better known as Garzey's Wing in English countries, this monstrosity is widely regarded as one of the most infamously bad shows in all of anime. Seriously. This is... like... Tommy Wisaeu's "The Room" levels of bad. So why is the rating a 3 and not something below 0? Because goddamn did I ever enjoy myself watching this absurd train-wreck of a show!
Corpse Party: Tortured Souls - Bougyakusareta Tamashii no Jukyou (Rating: 2): I'll be completely honest, this rating is completely biased. I loved the Corpse Party video game, which is weird since A) I generally don't like horror, and B) I've always hated stories that centered around young-child mutilation. But the way the game developed its characters, story and environment really hooked me and got me invested. However, this monstrosity of an anime adaptation decides to shorten/omit some of the best and sometimes most important scenes from the original story and decide to bet everything on mindless gore and shock value. Everything was LITERALLY so dark that I could barely see anything that was happening. And to top it all off, the ending was unnecessarily cruel, less intriguing than the game's true good ending, and was overall unsatisfying to me as a viewer. Do yourself a huge favor and AVOID THIS ANIME AT ALL COSTS and instead play the original game for a far superior and suspenseful horror story!
Yeah, this is pretty accurate. (I love the Facebook comment. I'm still gonna watch Sun and Moon (cause I guess I'm a damn masochist at this point AND I WILL NEVER GIVE UP THE DREAM FUCK YOU WRITERS), but he pretty much hit the nail on the head):
Ah, that's a bummer. I'm still looking for engineering jobs, but I have my cashier job to get me some cash. Still living at home, though I get to shell out some cash each month for utilities and phone bill and crap. I'd say do the same, but there's no way you wanna go back to Ohio. XD Also you going to ACEN? I totally forgot to ask!
I'm still in Chapter 3 and just starting the Performer side mission. I need more jobs cause I feel like I lean way too much on the ones I have (I know the Pirate job is supposed to be good, but at least for me it's been shit. I had more luck with Ringabel as a Ranger!).
You could probably get it on the Vita (I mean, it's still on the Playstation Store I'm sure), if I'm correct. Last I checked on mine it was still up, I just needed to make sure I had the memory free for it...which I probably have since I've been fucking lacking in buying all the games I want for it. (I sooooo want Danganronpa GDI.)
Besides, a Vita at GameStop is basically a steal nowadays at like $160...WHICH IS LIKE FUCKING HALF THE PRICE OF MINE AND IS IN MY FAVORITE COLOR AND WHAT I'M NOT SALTY YOU'RE SALTY BAKA.
Nope, still holding out hope for a dub. I know it's silly of me, but Digimon is one of those shows that I've basically never watched in Japanese (outside of Our War Game) and it's just too weird to not hear the dub voices.
It's part of why I still watch Pokemon in English only, and why I stopped watching Sailor Moon Crystal in Japanese (cause good freaking God Almighty is Usagi's voice paaaaaainful).
At least he got to sing for Digimon one more time before he passed away. For real, Butterfly will be ingrained on anime consciousness for a long damn time.
OH MY GOD DOES THE NEW SAILOR MOON CRYSTAL SEASON LOOK SO MUCH BETTER. NO MORE UGLY ASS CGI, EVERYONE LOOKS ON-MODEL, THE TRANSFORMATIONS AND ATTACKS LOOK PRETTY AS FUCK.
THANK WHATEVER LOGICAL PERSON AT TOEI WHO REALIZED THAT CRYSTAL S1 AND S2 LOOKED LIKE SHIT.
I mean, I'm a biased party since I'm playing Bravely Default right now, but honestly the money issue is a big con (for me, at least). Plus that's two games you could be playing, but Bravely Second would just be dedicating your time to one game and then you could move onto FE.
(Plus don't count FF13. We all know it's kinda sorta balls in general. :V)
I guess my vote is for Bravely Second! (Also I've only gotten to the 2nd chapter in BD. That Summoner chick kicked my ass for like ever. DX)
GGAAAAHH. IT LOOKS SO COOL. I wanna see this in theaters if it gets to theaters. (Also there better be a dub, because if Digimon tri STILL doesn't have one and this one doesn't get one, I am gonna be on a murderous rampage without the awesomeness of DAN GREEN.) (Though I doubt it.)

Mostly cause the next crate will have Assassination Classroom, Utena, and DIGIMON TRI items in it. ...how the fuck do I say no to that? D:
And if Tai isn't Joshua Seth....HAHAHAHA people will be dead from the rage. :D

Hope they dub the second season straight away. The Death Busters Act was always my favorite season/arc in the anime and manga. :D
