Exploring the themes of motherhood integrated into beautiful fantasy settings. The focus on parenting is more prominent in Wolf Children, with Maquia expending more time and effort to develop its world. Paprika
add

Breaking the barriers of reality with creative artistic symbolism, Paprika and Paranoia Agent stray far from the norm in terms of their storytelling. This unique style asks for a fair amount of interpretation from the viewer and as such can be extremely thought-provoking, with the risk of being vague and/or confusing.

Nanatsu no Taizai

Quanzhi Gaoshou
add

The main focus of Nanatsu no Taizai and Quanzhi Gaoshou is not the plot, nor is it even the characters. What both of these shows focus on is the spectacle. Nanatsu no Taizai throws together a world full of ridiculously strong creatures and characters and subsequently uses its story as an excuse to throw them against each other. Quanzhi Gaoshou uses its premise of professional MMO gaming to show off as many visually impressive action sequences as possible.

Shiki
add

Small, isolated village settings, full of suspense, violence and death. Higurashi and Shiki skillfully meld their dark themes and messages into their classic horror premise and unique stories. Higurashi stands out as particularly innovative in terms of its story whereas the most pronounced feature of Shiki is its eye-catching art.

Kenpuu Denki Berserk

Although Monster and Berserk do not share a similar setting or even a similar story they both explore human nature and dark themes such as nihilism in an explicit and serious manner. Both shows develop their themes by focusing on two characters and the interactions between them, whether direct or indirect.

Houseki no Kuni
add

Shinsekai Yori and Houseki no Kuni both thrust the viewer into a mysterious and unknown world, slowly unveiling it's secrets through the experiences of the characters. There is a strong presence of philosophical exploration in both shows, each of which blends this seamlessly into their story and characters. This provides a rich and fulfilling experience where the deeper meanings and messages feel like part of the shows rather than the events being merely vessels to impart morals and ideologies.

Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou
add

These thought-provoking shows both offer a post apocalyptic world to explore, gradually answering your questions and constantly making you ask more. Making full use of their premises, the level of detail and variety in the worlds of Humanity has Declined and Girls' Last Tour is as impressive as their characters' philosophical explorations.

Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan

Hinamatsuri (TV)
add

Comedy centering around characters with psychic powers is...not actually what I found to be the main similarity between these shows. What Hinamatsuri and Saiki Kusuo both share is a constantly developing world and characters, enriching the experience by keeping the jokes fresh and interesting as well as putting more weight behind them. This is comedy with thought behind it, that gets you to invest in the characters and their stories.

Interesting art styles and full of engaging dialogue. Music that fits perfectly with the shows' tone. Mononoke and Katanagatari are both very unique and clever in terms of their execution and direction, giving a rich experience for the brain as well as the eyes and ears.
