Well, it's the classical mainstream "history" revisionism, one of the reasons so many conservative movements are growing is exactly cuz that so called "history" is crumbling.
Btw: If you really liked the first arc of SAO, and you like to read, I would highly suggest you to check SAO:Progressive(The novel, not the manga.) out, it's a masterpiece IMO, it fixed all the problems of the original work and if you really like RPGs you will love it(Tons of relevant Quests and RPG mechanics/systems.).
