I tend to avoid them but the two series on my favorites are really good

Uh, that's difficult because I think they are all pretty accessible. It depends what you are looking for. I think you can generally split Ghibli movies in two categories: Slice of Life and Adventure (although some of the SoL ones do have adventure aspects). Chihiro (Spirited Away) is probably the one that is the most well-recieved in terms of popularity. It's also the one movie that is pretty much a mix of both categories. It's definitely one of his strongest movies as well. My personal favourite is Princess Mononoke, closely followed by Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Both are quite a bit more brutal than Chihiro, especially Nausicaä. They show violence and the darker traits of humans such as greed, hate, egoism, embossment and ignorance. They are carrying strong messages against the human "devil-may-care"-attitude, against war and for environmentalism and diplomacy/sympathy. Considering those movies are aimed at families, including children, they are quite dark. I applaud the creators for going this far, instead of taking the mollycoddle-route like Disney.
To make a long story short, I would recommend you to pick one out of the three movies I mentioned above for your first watch.

Miyazaki movies are basically magic to me. You can't really pin down specific stuff, they are just one coherent piece of art. Lots of love to the detail (especially in the animation), some strong messages. Whelp. I guess it makes more sense if you ask the questions, so feel free to ask any. I'll try not to be too biased with my answers.^^
