oh I forgot to say this in my earlier message, but I agree 5 Centimeters per Second is so underrated! I felt like it was pretty relatable and I thought it was a poignant but grounded portrayal of long-distance connections. I also moved a lot growing up (sometimes to a different countries) and long-distance in any o situation, friends or more can be hard. So I guess connected with that aspect a bit. I also just thought the movie was so beautifully animated/executed, it really moved me.

I honestly didn't expect these when I wrote the review, I was just trying to address the mismatched expectations I've seen from the forum. To be honest there was a time when I was unsure what to expect from the story as well, until I saw a comment describing ToG as Epic Fantasy, which greatly helped me appreciate ToG better, in what it is and what it isn't trying to be. I just hoped to share it, that's all.

Also lol the character section, ToG is indeed my obsession right now, I should diversify it further haha, it's been a while since I revisited the old series I've watched. Thank you again for giving ToG a chance, hope you find it enjoyable!

Sorry for a slow reply, I've got a few of these messages so I couldn't be bothered responding but since you're civilised i'll happily respond! I think you make some good points, my review for the anime was a little biased since i realised most of this after reading the manga which portrays it much more graphically and gets worse post-anime (won't say anything else about the manga incase of spoilers). While your categories make sense i think they're a little vague, I think the way content is portrayed is the key thing, for things like sexual assault and rape BERSERK SPOILERS: lets take berserk as an example, while it portrays rape which is very difficult to do it doesnt glorify it or portray it in any positive light, it also actually serves the plot of berserk and makes sense. I find berserk to be more of the exception when it comes to graphic sexual scenes like that because most of the time its very difficult to complete dettach the scene from any sexualisation or glorification.


With made in abyss the characters are exposed physically and abused in sexually provocative ways, if this made sense to plot and didn't serve to normalise that kind of behaviour I could get past it, but it feels like it serves no purpose when I read the manga.


I don't think people who disagree with me are pedophiles or anything of the sort, hopefully you get that! I didn't even think this stuff till i caught up on the manga which kind of made me realise the authors intent, thanks for the comment!

My explanation of why Made in Abyss isn't a problem in this manner isn't an original one admittedly. It's a strong response to the controversy surrounding Made in Abyss and its one of the most comprehensive counterarguments I've seen. I could never hope to summarize it just in a few paragraphs, the video is far more compelling admittedly.
