In a significant expansion move, Japan's Pierrot Co., Ltd. has signed a business alliance with South Korean animation studio Red Dog Culture House (RDCH) as of August 2024. This collaboration marks the studios' commitment to jointly produce and invest in anime content for the global market, beginning with an anime adaptation of the popular webtoon Latna Saga: Survival of a Sword King, known in Japan as Isekai Kenou Seizon-ki. Production for the adaptation is set to officially begin later this year.

Strategic Partnership for Global Audience Appeal
Over the next three years, Pierrot and RDCH will collaborate under a production committee established in Japan, aiming to create and promote anime projects that appeal to audiences worldwide. According to RDCH CEO Bae Ki-yong, this partnership presents an "invaluable opportunity" for RDCH to showcase its expertise and establish a stronger presence in the Japanese market, especially as they launch their IP, Latna Saga, as the partnership's debut project. This series, originally created by Kyung-bae Yim and drawn by Soonkyu Kwon for Studio KHIT, has a robust following in South Korea, adding to its international appeal.

Pierrot President Kazumichi Ueda expressed his admiration for RDCH's animation quality and praised CEO Ki-yong's leadership. Ueda emphasized that both teams are "working tirelessly" to ensure Latna Saga reaches its full potential, stating that Pierrot and RDCH's combined efforts will result in "a series fans around the world can look forward to."

Growing Collaborative Ventures at Pierrot
Pierrot, an independent studio founded in 1979, is renowned for producing iconic series like Naruto, Bleach, and Tokyo Ghoul. This partnership with RDCH is the studio's latest strategic expansion, following its recent business alliance with Asahi Production. By establishing multiple partnerships, Pierrot aims to bring fresh narratives to the global anime market, reinforcing its position as a leader in both animation production and international collaborations.

Pierrot and RDCH Set Sights on a Global Anime Market
With this alliance, RDCH, known for its work on Netflix's Love, Death + Robots, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, and bilibili's Tian Guan Cifu Er (Heaven Official's Blessing Season 2), brings its specialized experience in adapting webnovels and webtoons to anime format, complementing Pierrot's extensive expertise in long-running anime series. In addition to Latna Saga, Pierrot and RDCH are exploring other collaborative projects, including adaptations of popular Japanese manga and original Korean webtoons.

These partnerships mark a new era of collaboration for Pierrot, aiming to solidify its reputation as a leader in both the domestic and global anime markets.

So, will this be a long-term Japanese-Korean collaboration that will promote quality adaptations of Korean works? Just fantasy, or other webtoons too?
