It was announced that "Mahou Shoujo Taisen" will receive a TV anime adaptation to start airing spring 2014.

"Mahou Shoujo Taisen" is a project created from a variety show for the Otaku "2.5 Chigen TV" (2.5 Dimension TV). The characters are the mahou shoujo that represent each local town in Japan. The characters that won from the second illustration competitions that were held on pixiv will appear in the anime. The studio is Gainax.

Besides a TV series, there will be two games, and there will even be a module for a software for a new year's card design.

I hope this isn't another male-oriented mahou shoujo with hints of fanservice in it like some other shows that recently came out. (Hi Fate/Ilya and Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou) I'd really hate to see this genre be overtaken by lolicon magical girl series.

You do not have to watch it if there is gonna be fanservice plus I also doubt that it is NOT male-orientated as they are other mahou shoujo shows that centres around (female) children/teens are still currently airing.

TWO mahou shoujo per prefecture?? Are we talking of a 94 strong seiyuu cast here ?? Makes me wonder if there will be enough time for each mahou shoujo in the series lol

Or maybe it is their own tsukaimas'.

I didn't forget any of those, I just feel like Gainax wants to give the genre a go specially after the Madoka shitstorm happened.
I don't even remember there is much of any "shitstorm" for Madoka. A lot of wow's maybe though.

The key thing is that the mahou shoujo's are from the local towns. And if the local towns are from real towns in Japan, the intention would be clear: to promote the awareness and image of those towns, and possibly this will link to tourism and commerce revenues.

Although I must say that Gainax doing it does not inspire much confidence for me...but then the key visual looks pretty cool:

There weren't just two, there were more than that (like Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou, Iilya, Fantasista Doll).

Maybe for 2014 :D

I guess that because SHAFT got a goldmine from giving the Mahou Shoujo genre a shot, Gainax wants to take a shot now. Not that I mind, it sounds pretty decent to me, but personification character-based shows typically don't work out all too well.
I'll go ahead and give it a shot anyway, since I'm a fan of the genre and intrigued by the production.

People conveniently forget that Pretty Cure exists....
And Jewelpet. And Sailor Moon. And every other mahou shoujo that ISN'T Madoka. Sigh.

I hope this isn't another male-oriented mahou shoujo with hints of fanservice in it like some other shows that recently came out. (Hi Fate/Ilya and Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou) I'd really hate to see this genre be overtaken by lolicon magical girl series.

Chances are this will be male orientated at least from the pics that are posted on Pixiv, however it may not have fanservice and it's not going to be a purely loli show either, however there may be a few lolis that get in.

Jewelpet isn't all that popular among both Western anime viewers, I heard the toyline and anime was released in Europe and flopped, the later installments do have some marketing towards Otaku though (I seen official Dakimakuras of some of the characters).

Of course, my guess can still turn out to be shit, and Gainax just wanted to make a Mahou Shoujo show for no particular reason other than it being Mahou Shoujo.
