Ichi the Killer is a Seinen, Psychological, Thriller about a twisted yakuza warfare involving psychological mind games. The story itself is about excommunicated gangsters seeking revenge however this isn’t made clear until later on in the manga.

For the most part the story follows a fearsome killer known by his codename (Ichi) and the orders he undertakes from his so-called uncle. The main story may lack some depth but it tries to add some by revealing the past bullying experiences of Ichi, which led to his current state of mind. Although it doesn’t seem to do a good job at relating it to the present, it ...

warnings: rape and abuse are mentioned so be warned and for yall that scoffs at warnings like these then I have no interest in engaging in any conversation with you so just keep on trucking.

This is the ultimate misogynist paradise. If you hate women, then boy you're a fuckin a loser and I've got some good news for you. The writing is atrocious like instead of developing characters the writer seems more interested in displaying hyperviolence non-stop, which you know, isn't necessarily a bad thing but when you hate each and every character in the cast the hyperviolence comes off as mindless and boring.

And ...

Okay first things first, having read through Ichi the Killer I feel obligated to say - nay warn - you that this series does NOT pull any punches. The imagery used is both graphic and perverse, many of the characters possess varying degrees of sadism/masochism and the implications that are brought up are quite disturbing all in all.

Now with all of this said it's important to note that it is because of these aspects that the story works; because Ichi the Killer does not filter content it can show the darkest part of the criminal underbelly in the least flattering light possible, a light a ...

Wow, this manga will leave a lasting impression on you for a few days after reading it. The art in this book is incredibly detailed (Gekiga style), there are no cutting corners when drawing the characters or even the background scenery. The characters all have their own distinct personalities and they develop more and more as the story progresses. The art also gets better every volume.

This book is enjoyable, if you know what your going to be dealing with. I recommend watching the movie first just to see what your going to be reading. The amount of violence, sexual taboos, ...

STORY: 8
Koroshiya 1, or Ichi the Killer as I will address the serie from now on, is the story of a group of excommunicated Yakuza members who try to achieve money and pursue their objectives by manipulating and killing other criminals, aided by their partner Ichi, a ruthless killer. Ichi is in fact a young man in his twenties, with a dramatic past which caused his mental instability. This manga is his story as well. The author tackles themes such as violence, power, crime and the likes, adds a whole bunch of extreme violence, vices and perversions and builds a complex story which continuosly surprises ...

I don't understand what all the positive scores are about.
--
Maybe it's the translation I read, but the story felt like the most incoherent mess I've read in a long time. It's basically a crime snuff manga with a psychological subplot. The violence is stupidly excessive, the ending is too open-ended, any possible messages get muddled in the end -
Something about memories being fiction we tell ourselves?
Schizophrenia?
Delusions?
Grotesque portrayals and themes for the sake of diverting people away from the subject matter?
S&M themes about reaching your own satisfactions by hurting others?
Is the story itself about reaching meaning in life? - it's hard ...

If I wasn’t recommended this manga from a trusted friend I would not have given it a chance or endured so much just to finish this manga. In fact I kind of wish I hadn’t read it.

I feel like everyone who has a high review of this manga either lacks the intelligence to understand the distinction between true ero guro and something created solely to be edgy and offensive with no true purpose in its writing. I have a rule of thumb that if a horror manga is dependant on sexual violence it’s just a piece of shit and thats that. But this particular ...

The protagonist really lives his life on the EDGE, he has a SEAT at the edge of a marina at one point, which i really related to on a personal level.

This manga really kept me at the edge of my seat, i gotta admit.
My seat is really long, so this means alot. I could lie down on my seat, but i chose to stay at the very edge, the entire time.

The antagonist, now he's a man who truly lives his life on the EDGE.
The amount of freedom this man exudes really kept me at the edge of my seat.

The story ...

If you are looking for something different, then Ichi The Killer may turn out to be a strange and fascinating journey into the exploration of sadomasochism and brain washing that grips your interest from the first picture. If you're not into heavy psychology or beyond the norm things, then between the waterfalls of viscera, perversion and hordes of low lifes you'll probably find many highly offensive things.

Alright so starting out you know I don't like the vanilla stuff. I like things that stand out, that are strongly different from other manga (and anime

4/10 story
6/10 art
3/10 characters
5/10 enjoyment
4/10 overall.

The manga is an endless stream of sex and violence that happens for... no real reason. There are attempts to wire in deeper aspects of human psyche, but I would say in the end it falls short and reaches "a bit below mediocre" level.

In a sence it is similar to "meaningless murder and dismemberment" genre mangas like "Pumpkin Night", "Kuchikujima", "Caterpillar", "Terra Formars", "Satanofani" and abomination known as "Bougyaku no Kokekko". What sets it aside from the rest of the low quality is that grade of the story is a bit higher, and the author at least tried this time ...

Koroshiya Ichi is one of the weirdest things ever created by a human being. With a twisty storyline, disgustingly real artwork, and nuanced and multifaceted characters, it is one of those series that I really WANT to recommend to absolutely everyone, despite the fact that I know for a fact that it isn't everybody's cup of tea.

Hell, it isn't really anybody's cup of tea. I don't even know that I'd call reading Koroshiya Ichi an enjoyable experience. Interesting? Yes. Entertaining? Of course. Enjoyable?

One of the main things I like about Koroshiya Ichi is just how uncomfortable it is. Not only the gruesomeness of the imagery, ...

Finished it. Showered off all those body fluids that were flying off the pages. Held my johnson for a few minutes, just because. Took a deeeeep breath.

I found Ichi ridiculous, vile, disgusting, and wonderful all at the same time. The violence, perversions, and neuroses are off the charts, but the artwork and unique characterizations are saving graces. Yamamoto is a brilliant artist with a real ability to draw unique characters and pretty quickly give them a backstory that informs what they do in the tale. The occasional urban scenes are excellent, too.

I can't say that I loved how it ...

A short and direct review on this underrated manga.

For starters, before i started reading this manga i was uninterested mostly because of the vague yet weird summary, but well after a quick night i've realized i found a gem for violent subjects lovers, the story had so much potential, some parts of the story remained unknown even after the epilogue, and it's not supposed to be a cliffhanger at least it doesn't seem like it...

The art is fitting to the story, quite detailed if i may add. A gore manga art that is somewhat realistic in its own way... while the art is quite something ...

Warning, this story is pretty gore. As I read more works by Yamamoto, Hideo, the more I love his work. He has this exceptional ability of capturing this dark sexual identity in horror. I often find myself relating to a lot of his stories and characters. Ichi is no different, he struggles with his identity and is still very much a kid. I can relate to all the masochism and sadism in this book, and the bullying and pent up fear and anger in oneself. Ichi is a comically terrifying character and I love him, Jiji is also quite the amusement of a character. I ...

Ichi the Killer Review

“There is no love in your violence”- Masao kakihara

Ichi the killer is a manga written by Hideo Yamamoto which ran in Weekly Young Sunday from 1998 to 2001. Before we get deep into this since this is a spoiler filled review I must issue a content warning to you my audience. As someone who is not easily disturbed or unnerved Ichi the Killer did me dirty, so if you have a weak constitution for violence, gore, sexual assault, abuse, mutilation, or anything of that sort I implore you to proceed with caution as this manga holds nothing back, in some cases I ...

DON'T EVER READ IN THE BATHROOM!
Koroshiya 1 or Ichi The Killer is a story about a perverted teen with abnormal superhuman strength. In a city filled with crime, it's Ichi's duty to clean up the mess the Yakuza/Japanese Mafia have infected with.

This is a seinen manga that contains a lot of gore, blood, body horror and usage of the word 'rape' so it may not be suitable for many people to read this one. Also this series heavily focuses on manipulation and bullying or the precise phrase would be 'manipulating through bullying' which could be some uncomfortable themes for many people. I picked up ...

For people planning on reading, the only thing is a pretty big trigger warning for rape. Things like the extreme gore and torture are to be expected, but it's done in a fun way.

I felt the manga focused way more on characters like Ichi and Kaneko, but it didn't add all that depth to them whatsoever. I think Kakihara was definitely more pushed aside in the manga, while the movie put a fair amount of time for each character recurring the story.

Absolutely loved the art though, some panels were incredible because of the special effects and the facial expression of the characters. Overall, pretty ...

I already watched long time ago the live action adaptation by Takashi Miike (really recomended movie for anyone who is interested). I'm a big fan of Miike and I thought his adaptation was the interesting thing, not the original work itself. A few months before I realized Koroshiya 1 author was the one of Homunculous, I haven't read that one yet but I know it's a respected manga and so, so I decided to give it an oportunity.

The movie has some different aesthetic / style choices, but everything else was already in the manga, Miike did not expanded the original with his imagination but Koroshiya ...

Spoilers below.

Ignoring the gore that's arguably worse than Metamorphosis and Loli in a Box combined, it's a grueling yakuza tale with... intriguing characters to say the least. Ichi is one that I feel sympathy for, despite his murderous rampage. He takes on childish behavior, including crying hysterically after a murder and referring to his prey as "bullies" rather than full-fledged criminals, which could only be a result of Ojisan's manipulation. Poor guy had his bullying and PTSD used as a tool for Ojisan's destruction of the mafia hierarchy. The art is a unique style, tainted by the absolutely horrific scenes that are illustrated. The ending ...

I found out about this manga after watching the 2001 Takashi Miike live action adaptation. I started out with some pretty high expectations due to the movie. Let me tell you, this exceeded all of them. Each character is methodically thought out, and even the minor characters get fleshed-out backstories and character arcs. From the mentally unstable killer Ichi, to the masochistic Anjo leader Kakihara, the mysterious manipulator Jiji, the traitorous hustler Karen, even the minor characters like the twins and Kakihara's bodyguard Kaneko get to have character, and are not just there to advance the plot or be fillers. The story is immaculate. Not ...
