Synopsis

"In the name of the moon, I shall punish you!"

Usagi Tsukino is a cheerful 14-year-old who attends Juuban Municipal Junior High School. She prefers eating and playing video games to studying, which results in her notably poor grades. She also gets easily upset, whether by baseless insults or reasonable reprimands. It is very unlikely that she could be known as anything but a bad influence and a crybaby, but that begins to change when she meets a black cat.

Given a special brooch from the black cat named Luna, Usagi can use it to transform into a guardian of justice named Sailor Moon! She is now tasked to protect the Earth from all that is evil and to find both a missing princess and a sacred jewel known as the Mystical Silver Crystal. Whether she likes it or not, Usagi's beautiful transformation marks the start of meeting the mysterious Tuxedo Mask, fighting alongside new comrades, and learning to take responsibility in this acclaimed magical girl classic.

Background

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon received the 1993 Kodansha Manga Award in the shoujo manga category. It has received wide critical acclaim, being credited with redefining the magical girl genre.

It was adapted to multiple anime series, two series of stage musicals, as well as a 49-episode live-action series from October 4, 2003 to September 25, 2004. A twelve-volume shinsouban (renewal edition) was published in Japan from September 22, 2003 to September 22, 2004, including two volumes containing short stories. This new edition had new cover art and title logo, as well as corrections in some panels.

The series was published in English by Mixx (later Tokyopop) as a serial in two magazines, MixxZine and Smile, beginning in 1997. The series was later published in eighteen volumes, from December 1, 1998 to September 18, 2001. Tokyopop's license expired in May 2005 and this edition went out of print. It was later republished by Kodansha Comics USA from September 13, 2011 to November 26, 2013, based on the Japanese shinsouban reprint. Kodansha re-released the series from September 11, 2018 to October 20, 2020; this edition was based on the 20th anniversary kanzenban reprint. These editions included new color pages, updated translations, better quality paper, and special holographic covers. The series was also published in Polish by Japonica Polonica Fantastica.

ENJOYMENT SECTION: 8/10
Ah, good ol’ pretty sailor warriors! Despite being the series most other mahou shoujo copied thereafter, it remains in the tops because very few managed to have its variety and vividness. Plus, I like it too.

ART SECTION: 7/10 [Bishoujos in Sailor Suits.]

Following the trend, the artwork is extremely shoujo, that means very breezy sketches and loose borders between frames. It looks very amateurish in the first part but along the way it improves considerably and towards the end it now looks splendid. You just have to get used to the idea that the plot is driven by dialogue and mostly cinematics, rather motion ...

Mixed Feelings
I never grew up with Sailor Moon like most of my friends did, so I don't really have the nostalgia associated to it that most people seem to have. That being said, I was always curious about it as I've always heard how good it was from those around me.

There will be spoilers so read on at your own risk:

I think for what it is, it was a decently good series overall. However because I haven't grown up with the series I think my expectations were too high considering how much everyone around my hyped it up. It wasn't for me really, most of the ...

(READ REVIEW BEFORE HATE RATING!!!!!)

One of the WORST manga I have ever read.

Since I am NOT the target demographic of a little girl, which this manga's story is supposed to be consumed by, I am NOT going to critique the STORY ITSELF. However, I AM going to critique how the story is PRESENTED, as well as the art, structure and so on. As the story could be the best, most violent adult thing ever, but the if the presentation is as bad as Sailor Moon is, then I will still critique it in the same way. As this is a product, while the story ...
