Kaichou wa Maid-sama! is a shoujo manga, but it's not a very original one. The story, and the situations, have been used and reused in countless other stories. So, if you're looking for something with a lot of depth, or a lot of action, or just something a little different, this ISN'T the manga for you. However, if you want a cute story to pass the time, or are in love with shoujo, then you will probably enjoy this.

STORY - As I said, this is just another shoujo. Nothing is really special about the story, but, unlike some others, it isn't totally abominable. It's cute, ... generic, not very fast-paced, but quite enjoyable.

ART- Usually, when i start off with a manga, the art is... not so great. The mangaka's skills get better and better as time goes by. But, with Kaichou, even though it seems to be the mangaka's first work, the art is quite nice. There is quite a bit of chibiness and face-faulting in this manga, and I think it was portrayed quite nicely with just enough humour. The cases when the characters are being serious are quite nice as well. One thing I especially like about the art is how the male lead is portrayed. His chibis make me giggle (they're just too cute and appriate), but it's his serious face that I like most. When he smiles, his eyebrows are raised, making it seem like a mocking smile, which fits his personality. Then, on the rare occasion or two when he smiles without raised eyebrows, he seems all the more sincere and easy to fall for. I don't know if this was done on purpose or not, but it's just something I picked up on. The reason I give the art a nine and not a ten is because it's not always consistent. The art focuses mostly on people, not scenery or anything like that, and I sometimes notice a weird-looking eye or hand. But it's such a small thing, not worth taking out more than one point.

CHARACTER - This, I feel, is what the manga offers that makes it special. There are two main characters, a girl and a guy. The male lead is very likeable, very funny, and very nice, but he IS a touch shoujo-ish. He just seems too perfect for real life, as likeable as he is. So, even though he's a good character, he kind of generic, and not very special. I DO like his 'wtf' attitude, and I'm sure you will too, so he's a def. win! The FEMALE lead on the other hand is... wow. Okay, so you know how anime/manga girls are almost ALWAYS annoying? Like, how they just let themselves be protected by their guys, get all flustered around the ones they like, how their "assertiveness" is more "bitchiness" than assertiveness, how they want a boyfriend oh-so-badly, etc, etc? This heroine is SO not like that. She is assertive, to be sure, and sometimes puts a toe on the line of bitchiness, but she does try to imrpove her character, which I think is quite nice. But the thing that gets me about her is how NOT annoying she is. In fact, she makes me laugh quite a lot with her thoughts about the male lead, and that gives her bonus points. She's strong, and she protects herself, but she's also not bitchy. She's really great! And I hate most female characters, but the way... she's like, the second out of all the anime and manga I've seen/read that I actually like.

So, the two main characters really stand out here, and I like them a lot. The one thing that I'd like to see ore of is better backup characters. The other girls in the manga seem to be typically annoyingly sweet, and the other boys seem to be typically annoyingly weird/disgusting/b*stardish. But, it's okay, since the mangaks doesn't give them too much of a spotlight.

ENJOYMENT - As I already said, this is just another shoujo. Although it has certain redeeming features, like its art and characters, it is stil just another shoujo. If you like these sort of cute reads, like me, then you will definitely enjoy it. If you're looking for something more fast-paced, I would advise you to look elsewehere. I, personally, enjoyed it very much. It had moments that made me laugh out loud, smile knowingly, squeal, and pity the characters. That's what we're all looking for, right?

OVERALL - A cute manga. Story is merely ordinary which lowers its overall mark, but the art and characters really stand out, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. So, it gets an 8 - very good. :)

Kaichou wa Maid-sama is my guilty pleasure—specifically, Usui. -- how’s that for a review opening? Too soon?

Story: 8

As many other reviews have already mentioned, the premise of this manga is cliché. I’ll admit that. It is. A “tough” girl actually works at a girly place and *gasp* of course she just HAS to be discovered by the hottest guy at school. She has to keep it a secret, and of course, with secrets, there’s blackmail. There are plenty of cliché situations in this manga but Maid Sama approaches these clichés really well and in ways that kept me interested. I never really rolled my eyes ... or got bored with what was happening.

Art: 9

I happen to like Hiro Fujiwara’s style of drawing. The characters are attractive and are distinguishable from one another. The backgrounds are drawn nicely too and some panels where Usui is giving you a smoldering look gets you squealing most of the time. Scratch that. ALL THE TIME.

Character: 9

Alright, now it’s appropriate to say it: Usui is my guilty pleasure. No matter how Gary Stu he is, no matter how copy and paste he might be, no matter how real guys might scoff at him, Usui Takumi is perfection in the form of a manga character. I’ve read about a thousand characters like Usui, so why? Why is he the epitome of perfection out of all the other guys? I HATE Gary Stus, but I LOVE Usui! The man could be picking his nose and scratching his balls and I’d still swoon for him! SOMEONE ANSWER ME! WHY?!
It’s a mystery. Usui’s a mystery. Mysterious guys are hot. Usui’s hot. Conclusion: Usui Takumi.

Alright, let’s move onto the main character: Misaki. Ultimately, Misaki is the reason why I love this manga and she’s probably the only thing that’s not cliché in this whole story (besides her acting like a tsudere occasionally in front of Usui). But that’s what makes this manga so durable. Misaki is what holds it together. What I love about her is that her personality never really changes, but she does indeed get character development.

I’ve read reviews where people are hating on Misaki for being a man-hater and honestly, her attitude sort of turned me off from reading as well. But I gave it a chance because at least she wasn’t a typical stupid shoujo heroine. And boy am I glad I continued. Misaki gradually changes for the better, but she still maintains her tough and hardworking personality. And the entrance of THE PERFECTION OF USUI doesn’t turn her into a fumbling, bumbling, constantly-blushing idiot! In practically every cliché shoujo, the heroine automatically becomes someone entirely different in the presence of the hot guy, but Misaki keeps her composure and only loses it when Usui does the smolder, and who wouldn’t?

Misaki’s a girl, she’s human too y’know.

But maybe this answers my question as to why I love Usui’s character—probably because he has Misaki as his partner and they bring out the best in each other.

As for the other characters in this manga, a few of them are for comic relief (idiot trio pops to mind), but I’m never bored when they appear so I appreciate their presence.

The interactions between Misaki and Usui are surprisingly not cheesy. I don’t really remember cringing, but I definitely remember squealing and fanning myself. I’m a fan girl, what’d you expect? Anyway, speaking of fan, there’s a good amount of fan service in Maid-sama. And what I mean by fan service isn’t ass and tits, but Usui and Misaki playing the pocky game and other “that shouldn’t be sexy, but it is” moments.

Misaki and Usui not only make a sexy couple, but a badass couple as well. The two of them can hold their own individually, but when they’re together, let’s just say anyone who messes with them better watch out for any glass shards.

And though I mentioned that Misaki sometimes acted like a tsundere, it’s never extreme and it doesn’t happen so often that it becomes annoying. She also eventually begins to accept her feelings for Usui, which in this case, is something I can respect of Misaki, considering she never previously cared about romance and was a man-hater. And no this doesn’t happen in a matter of chapters. The romance actually takes its time to develop, which I enjoyed—especially when you could see the sparks igniting between them and their chemistry working together.

I know 100% that if Misaki had been replaced by a meek shoujo heroine who wasn’t as unaffected by Usui, I would’ve probably dropped the series long ago and Usui wouldn’t my guilty pleasure. The fact that Misaki is slightly unaffected by his charms only adds to the romance and their development.

I wouldn’t call this a slow romance, but it is paced appropriately.

In the end, Kaichou wa Maid-sama is full of clichés, but it’s as if Fujiwara knew our limits and backed off just before it got too annoying. How she does it, I don’t know, but she’s good at it. Maid-sama (and Usui) to this day remains a guilty pleasure of mine, full of its clichés and perfection. And I love it.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama is a shoujo manga with a bit of attitude and a pair of interesting main characters. It isn't entirely original, unique or different from other shoujo already fleshed out for audiences to read about but what it does do is make you laugh, make you smile and even think that maybe some hot guys could be aliens.

Story: 7 out of 10
I'm not going to lie here, the story isn't very original once you get past some key elements. Basically, you follow the life and adventures of Misaki, who is currently the "Iron Fisted" President of her now co-ed high school. With the ... majority of the students still male, she took it upon herself to throw down the ballot and make some changes for the female populace and herself. The thing is, she has a secret that she can't exactly tell the world; she works in a maid cafe to earn money for her family, consisting of her sister and her mother. Ironically (and rather cliche), there's this really hot, mysterious and rather popular guy named Usui who notices the President and accidently finds out her secret. And thus, the hilarity, the annoyance, and the fun times ensue.

So basically, what you have is an interesting concept but with cliched aspects that really don't separate it from most shoujo manga (the sexual tension, putting up a front with people, being annoyed but loved by a hot guy etc). It's not done badly though so it's enjoyable but if you're looking for something original and different, you won't find much of an edge with Maid-sama.

Art: 8 out of 10
The artwork is decent. If you compare the old artwork in the first chapters to the latest chapters, there is a big difference in the artwork. It's not crappy in the beginning but it doesn't look as appealing as it does later on. Personally, I think the artwork is one of the strongest points of the manga and the mangaka does a great job of making the characters attractive and nice-looking. Usui is definitely that sexy guy that most can see why girls love him and Misaki, though brash and rough, is a pretty woman.

Characters: 8 out of 10
Mainly, it's the main characters that give this story its strength. You have Misaki, who is not your typically weak-willed, naive and annoying heroine. She is a bit naive in some aspects but still, her character is fresh and nice. She is really funny person, a strong woman and a independent lady (which, no offense to a lot of shoujo women, is a good change of pace). Then you have her chip on the shoulder, Usui. He's smart, athletic, sexy, enticing, and overall, like the perfect smartass. He seems perfect, which is kind of cliche with most mangas but still, he's just enjoyable as a character (and did I mention, really sexy?).

As for the other characters, you have the students of Misaki's school, student council members and a rather busty teacher who comes later on as well as the Maid Cafe workers who are a collective bunch of cliches. They are cute but not really original. Though, I'm not going to lie, I do have a soft spot for one of the characters (his name escapes me) who wears glasses and is shy. But anyway, it's not unique or original but it makes the story cute.

Enjoyment: 7.5 (8) out of 10
Honestly, this manga isn't very original as I've said but it's still enjoyable. The main issue I have though is that frustrating element of shoujo manga where the main couple has way too much sexual tension and won't get together. I won't spoil the series for anyone but at a certain point, I start to think "Wow...so you two are together...aren't together?" I mean, it's like real life I suppose but still, it's a bit frustrating, enticing but kind of annoying all the same. But overall, it's pretty enjoyable.

So basically, Kaichou wa Maid-sama is your typical but slightly unique shoujo manga that makes you laugh, makes itself look cute and has some nice artwork. Besides that, it's not original but has an interesting lead and sexy suitor/potential partner so overall, I'd say if you want to read a shoujo manga with a slight difference from most, go read this one. Otherwise, if you want something gripping, different, unique and ground-breaking, I'd keep to steppin.

This is probably my first review for a manga. So here goes.

After losing hope for Kaichou wa Maid-sama after the cliff-hangy ending in the anime. I still had hope and discovered the manga. And oh boy, it fixed everything. After reading the manga, I felt really relieved. No more cliff-hangers, No more sad feelings, just happiness and relieves.

The manga wrapped everything up great. There's nothing to criticize and at the same time I can't come up with anything else that is positive to say because it is already a perfect ending to the anime. So I'll just give my regards.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama is ... an amazing anime that I once rejected but came back to see it with no regrets after finishing it. Despite it's oldness, it really is a good anime that I truly enjoy watching and reading. Thank you J.C. staffs for making this an anime, and thank you Fujiwara Hiro for creating such a wonderful story and a great art. I am truly thankful. Thank you.

Here we have another story, where a a rich-ass guy falls in love with a poor young girl. A girl whose pretty hot headed and beats the living crap out of the guy for no apparent reason.

Plot - 6/10

I have to say, I am a harsh critic. This story is so fully of cliques and ecchi parts, it just drags out the story. Once upon a time, a girl, whose president of the school meets up with a true player, a guy who is super rich. From there, romance in the air and the girl just can't seem to spit out her feelings for him.

Character ... - 6/10

Alright. Character wise, they start the develop rather slowly for a couple of chapters. Then each of them are show their true colors, confessions and history in a chapter or so. Though this manga is still ongoing, you can expect more romance and clique character development.

Art - 6/10

Typical anime, which you can find almost everywhere. Though at a glance, the art might seem dull, this manga has its moments.

Overall - 7/10

I do not mean to discourage you guys, but read it at your own risk. If you guys just eat up romance and drama with a spoon, be my guess. Just be prepared to go through chapters and chapters of repetitive cliques, ecchiness, drama, and fan services.

This was one of the very first mangas that I had started to read when I had gotten interested into reading manga so much. It's a great story with great characters and to me it's an original piece of work compared to other soft shoujo mangas. I latched onto it immediately and loved it!If your looking for a first time read then this is definitely the one your looking for.
ART-The art is beautiful, and not messy looking.
STORY-The story is cute, simple like a teenagers everyday type of life going to school and whatnot. Introducing a wide range of feelings to the reader and it makes ... you feel what the characters are feeling,
CHARACTERS-The characters are cute, fun, and thankfully none of them seem to be annoying! You'll come to love them all!
Overall, I would give this manga a 10/10!

So far people are saying this manga is too much like other mangas and its kinda boring. ?! What are you talking about?! Ok, i'll admit there are lots of things in this manga that have been used before, but this manga is also deffrent in lot of ways. I vary much Enjoy this funny, cute, romantic manga. I can also kind of relate to it someways, which is awesome! its super funny and leaves me wanting more and more! the girls are beautiful and the guys are hot! (mainly Usui Takumi) I'm so happy that thay even made it into a Anime! :) ...
Plot: Seika High School, once an all-boys school notorious for its wild students and for generally being a terrifying place for girls, has recently become a co-ed school. With the female population still a minority and living in fear of the over-the-top antics of the males, Misaki Ayuzawa takes it into her own hands to reform the school and allow the girls to feel safe in the rough environment.

Training, studying and even becoming the first female student council president of the school, Misaki has gained a reputation among the male students body as an uptight boy-hating dictator and as a shining hope for the teachers and fellow female students. However, despite her tough-as-nails appearance, she secretly works part-time at a maid cafe in order to support her family. Unfortunately, her hard-earned reputation is threatened when the popular and somewhat impassive Usui Takumi takes an interest in her after discovering her in a maid uniform after school. Now Usui follows miskai everywhere and even saves her from time-to-time, She started out to really hate him, but things are going a deffrent way..? You'll have to read to find out! :)

I give this Manga a 100 and its my 2nd fave manga of all time. (1st is Bleach)

i dont care that this anime/manga was cliche BECAUSE kaichou wa maid sama SET the cliche.

i will never recover from the hole in my heart that these MCs left behind because they just dont make MCs like this anymore. I will sell my kidney for another season or more of ayuzawa idc. Shoujo is already hard to come by but shoujo with likeable MCs are so rare these days, the slightest problem that reaches the couple will instantly break them apart but I feel like ayuzawa and usui both handled huge problems with the best attitude that made me just keep rooting for them ... throughout the whole manga

Granted Kaicho wa maid sama was one of my very first shoujo manga/anime and thus I am slightly biased towards it But to this day after reading so many shoujos, Kaicho still remains one of the best.

GOOD POINTS

1. The Art is awesome
I dont know your defination of good art but Kaicho wa maid sama is one of mine. Even at the beginning of such a long manga when the art is usually bad compared to the ending, kaicho's art was still levels above other 5 chapter shoujo mangas. No cring worthy awkward postures and it kept gettting better.
Art is crucial to a visual entertainment such ... as mangas and even if you come for the story, the art and pacing of the panals are very important as those are what causes the most impact. Not to mention just the good art itself makes you reluctant to drop it.

2. Ayuzawa sempai is bae
Ayuzawa Misaki sempai is bae no matter what anyone says.
I'm a man of simple taste, give me a main character I like then I already like the story. Misaki's character is supposed to be a hard-working young girl not afraid to stand up for herself, and a man-hater feared by the males. Her strong personality and the martial strength she has to back her up (unlike the countless all talk no action female leads) really touched me. Best of all, she wasn't born strong but obtained the strength to implement justice through hard work (unlike countless female leads who let their gender determine their strength).
Misaki sempai isn't perfect, and that's what makes it good. She over estimates herself and later her man-hating is shown to be biased but through her interactions with the male lead and her surrounding people, she gradually improves her faults. THIS is character development in case some mangas weren't sure what the hell it was.

3. Then they brought Usui Sempai
Just Misaki would have been enough for kaicho to be a good manga, and when the author brought Usui, you knew it was going to be a great manga.
You wanna know what Usui Takumi is, he's the epitome of perfection; paired with the awesome art in the later chapters made him feature in every fan girls' wet dream. His mysteriously cool alpha male aura along with his superior specs and face contrasting with his indifferent casual personality to everyone except Misaki, made all fan girls go kyaa...including me.

BAD POINTS

The manga is longer than it should be, with room for shortening. A lot of large conversation dialogues make you feel dull at the beginning and personally even if the entire maid cafe cast were deducted, the manga's rating would not have suffered but improved. The romance progressed slowly but surely but sometimes large arcs would make you hungry for OTP scenes. The trope itself was somewhat cliques but it was nicely done.
These aspects made it loose a star in my dictionary but still weren't enough to prevent it from being one of the best.

Story (6) - One of the most cliche settings and plots of a story. You can find the story countless times in many other works of manga. A basic standard shoujo manga, with the basic plots and events. Maid, poverty, boy that is almost perfect. Its what almost every shoujo manga is like. Despite being so cliche and so over-used, the author finds a way to draw the readers in still. Some point in the story it gets boring, I admit but at other points there is suspense and thrill, just makes me want to read more and more.

Art (6) - I have seen better ... shoujo manga artists, but the artist for this manga is quite competent. The drawings aren't horrible, actually its a bit above average. The drawings have no special trait that distinguishes it from other works. The drawings looks like any other shoujo manga. It very bland. Although the drawings are very plain, they are well fitted for this story. The story is like every other manga and so are the drawings, that is how it should be.

Character (7) - The protagonist of the story is a maid, poor and a student body president. You can find these types of characters almost anywhere. The author made Ayuzawa Misaki a standard tsundere heroine. At some points of the story, Misaki can become a moe character, and it is over-whelming at some points.

Enjoyment (9) - The moe in the manga just awe-struck me. Its hard to find manga nowadays with as much as moe as these kinds. The manga is cute and innocent. Although the mangaka used a cliche story board and cliche character selection with mediocre art. The mangaka makes his or her work stand out above all others. Although everything is so plain about the story, something just appeals you more and more. After a character, I just want to read more and more and see how the development goes between Misaki and Usui.

Overall (8) - Although I believe the score should be higher. I think the score should be a 10, but it is undeniable that the story, art, and characters has nothing that makes its exclusive towards other works. This work is very well rounded.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama! may seem like a typical shoujo manga with a generic love story, but that certainly isn't the truth. Despite its cliches, it's actually a very compelling manga with a great story and even better characters.

You may have a question. Why Kaichou wa Maid-sama! so great even though it's kinda cliched? I'll explain why below.


Story (7)

At first glance, Kaichou wa Maid-sama! (I'll simply refer to it as "Maid-sama" from now on) seems like a generic high school romance story, but it's definitely not one. Instead, it's a very unique and wholesome love story between two individuals with contrasting personalities, who are simultaneously similar ... in many aspects.

The story of Maid-sama is very entertaining right from the beginning and progresses at a steady pace. The author gives an adequate amount of time to narrate the story Takumi and Misaki and beautifully depicts their rather unusual but beautiful relationship. The author also gives enough time to portray how Takumi and Misaki develop their relationship by overcome all the difficulties and hindrances they face along the way, which is more apparent in the later chapters of the manga.

There are some short chapters too, that revolve around Usui and Misaki, as well as the other characters of the manga. Although these chapters don't have any direct impact on the story, they're almost as enjoyable and help flesh out the side characters a bit more. (That chapter with Usui's female version is especially good, if you get what I mean.)

That being said, I do have a few gripes with how some things are executed. There is a considerable amount of unnecessary drama with a certain character named Igarashi throughout most of the story, which is probably my biggest issue with the manga. And honestly, the exaggerated drama regarding Takumi's familial issues feels a bit tedious and dragged out as well. However, I think the conclusion is very satisfying and greatly executed. Although there is a time skip near the end, it's carried out decently, especially compared to some of the other manga that I have read.


Art (9)

The art of Maid-sama is very beautiful. Though the first few chapters are drawn a bit poorly, as the manga continues, the art becomes a lot more beautiful. Hiro Fujiwara's development as an artist throughout the entire serialization of Maid-sama is noticeable here.


Character (8.5)

Maid-sama has a bunch of amazing characters—Usui and Misaki being my favorites among all of them.

Misaki seems like a typical tsundere at first glimpse, but she has a lot of special characteristics which make her unique and loveable. She used to despise men in the past because of her father, but she gradually gets rids of her prejudiced approach against men after Usui came in her life. Although it might have taken her a bit too long, Misaki eventually realizes that she actually loves Usui and develops an intimate relationship with him. She is very diligent, honest and kind as well, which adds to her appeal.

Usui also seems like a very bland and generic character at first glance. He can easily be mistaken for a typical Mary Sue whose only personality trait is that he's good at almost anything that he does, but there's actually a lot more to him besides that. Despite his teasy personality, he is very sweet and gentle towards Misaki and always thinks for her welfare. Whenever she is in trouble, he tries his best to help her even if it causes to harm to himself. Usui's past is kept shrouded in mystery in the first half of the manga, but it is given a lot of focus in the second half which explains his rather cold and alouf personality.

Usui and Misaki's relationship is basically what makes this manga so great. On the surface, you wouldn't think they would be a suitable couple, but as the story progresses, you realize that they are perfectly compatible for each other. Despite being entirely different in a lot of aspects, they bring out the best in each other when they are together.

The side characters can be a little cliched, but that doesn't stop them from being entertaining. The author intentionally uses their cliched characteristics and quirks to create unusual situations every now and then, which are hilarious to say the least. Most of the characters are likeable, and they are decently characterized as well. Moreover, there are a couple of extra epilogue chapters at the end that revolve around a few of the side characters, and they are heartwarming to say the least.


Enjoyment (8)

Kaichou wa Maid-sama! does have some cliches, but these cliches are used cleverly to make the manga really compelling. The story, the characters, the romance, the comedy—almost everything about it is very heartwarming and entertaining.


Overall (8)

As I said before, Kaichou wa Maid-sama! can be cliched at times, but it has various other solid aspects that make it stand out. So, if you love reading shoujo manga, give Kaichou wa Maid-sama! a try. Actually, I would recommend reading the manga to any manga readers. No matter what your age or demographic is, I believe you will enjoy reading it. It's probably one of the best shoujo manga out there.

Yeah, so it's shoujo. I'm not a huge fan of shoujo, but all these long series are extremely useful when it comes to wasting time effectively (don't you agree?) :-)

It's not waiting for the cockblocks to stop as in josei series (Hapi Mari, we're still waiting in here!). rather, it's the 50th chapter now and they still hadn't made it to the confession moment. but in the meantime you get dragged into the series, even if it isn't good, just to see if they manage to make out or not (although you know they will...)

And Kaichou wa Maid-sama! is exactly this very kind of series. ...


Story: 6
the girl has a double identity, and the only one who discovers the secrets is the main bishie, now what a suprise! :-) and here comes the next suprise: they also start to feel something to each other! and the series drags on like, forever, waiting for some improvement in their relationship.
there are few nice things about the plot. I like Misaki's background, it's realistic and atypical for shoujos. her dislike towards guys and her desperation for work at the cafe are really well motivated. Minus Usui's background, it really does not make much (if any) sense. He is way too ideal, therefore is quite a flat character. It's not _that_ stupid however. It's just all sooo unnaturally stretched in time.

Art: 8
Art is very pleasant. The author had a great idea with the maid café and different dress-up organized there - we see tones of different cute outfits. The characters are drawn in a charming way, it's a pleasure for your eyes to just look at the pictures and enjoy the mangaka's skill, clever outfits and beautiful teenagers (do not confuse with his/her ability of writing interesting dialogues). :-)

I have quite a problem here, folks. Because of Usui (the main uber-bishounen) it should get three-four. he is drawn nicely, but because of being too perfect it is unbearable to like him. But the maids from the café are fun and interesting, and to some degree so is Misaki. The idiot trio is hilarious! And the figure of Misaki's childhood friend is a nice change - not another ideal bishie, but a simple kid from a farm competing with the main guy. good.

It's quite enjoyable - as a middle-class cliche shoujo is expected to be. Nothing thrilling though. The idiot trio and Misa's colleagues are a funny and enjoyable point of the series. The three otakus are hilarious, but at the same time it is a kind of an indirect critique towards the fandom. I liked it. The scenes between the main characters - playing hide and seek forever. you know it, you've seen it 1903837 times in other shoujos waiting 200 chapters for I love you too+kiss scene :-)

read if you enjoy shoujo or have some spare time to kill, OR are a fetishist of maid costumes :-))))

Maid Sama is what a lot of shoujo are. Cute, funny and entertaining. But it manages to do it better than a lot of other shoujo I've seen attempt it. (*cough* Fall In Love Like A Comic *cough*)

Characters: The characters are stereotyped as a lot of shoujo characters are. The main girl is tsundere and the main guy is... uh.... I don't know the term. Is there a term? Well, anyway. he's the strong and cool type. You know, the type that's good at everything. He cooks, he's athletic, he gets good grades... you know the drill. ANDDD.... He has an angsty past, too! SHOCKER! ... But not really. Anyway, despite this, they're still completely lovable. Misaki ( the girl) is fun to watch. She's interesting and you really don't know what she's going to do next. Usui (the guy) says some that I completely agreed with. I bet you're expecting me to tell you what it is word for word,. don't you? Not happening. because I can't remember it that well. But he said something along the lines of the reason he loved her (SPOILER ...but not really) was because she was so entertaining. You're never sure if she's going to smile or yell. And yes, a lot of tsundere are like this but I love the way Hiro Fujiwara pulls it off with Misaki.

Usui is just wonderful. He's just... great. He's hillarious and, even though compeltely unrealistic, a lot of fun. His comic face, I also would like to add, is AMAZING. I don't know why, but I just love it. It makes me laugh even to just look at it. He always seems very laid-back and also does the most random things at times that make you just go "...WAT." The way he compliments Misaki is perfect. They're a great comedic pair. I love watching the two of them together because the NEVER fail to make me laugh. Not to mention, go "Awwwe...." at.

So even though these characters aren't totally original, they're wonderful and I think anyone could love them. Also, the side characters are a lot of fun to watch, too. Especially Kanou and Yukimura.

Plot: Nope, the plot ain't that original either. It just carries the story and that's fine because that's all it meant to do.

Art: The art is average. It's not great, it's not bad. It does fit the story really well though, so I like it.

Overall: I personally love this manga. Definitely one of my favorites. It may not have overloads of emotional depth (which is what I preferr) but it's great anyway. I love a manga that can make me laugh. Honestly, I don't usually find a manga that can make me laugh but this one had me in tears. Not kidding.

Reccomnded for: Shoujo lovers. If you don't like shoujo in general, then this manga will not enthuse you. If you can even mildly enjoy shoujo though, you will probably like this manga. It might even make you think more fondly of shoujo. Also, if you like Special A you will also love this. Misaki and Usui's relationship is a lot like Hikari and Kei's.

Kaichou wa Maid-Sama!

My favorite anime and manga of all.
This is a shoujo kind of manga, and I love every bit of Maid-Sama.

Great story, it is hilarious, and I wish it would continue on with a lot more chapters.

Although, it does have its faults; it uses the same story line throughout the story, Ayuzawa sees Usui and calls him names, then in the end he saves her from something and they do something cute together. It's almost repeated that way half of the time you read the story, but I still think it is worth reading if you're into those cute/romantic and ... hilarious kind of manga.

This will always be my #1!!

Kaichou wa Maid-sama is not an extraordinary story which is very different from other Shoujo Manga but unlike the others I really liked Kaichou wa Maid-sama and enjoyed every page of it.

Why?

First of all: The Characters. They are all very different and you cannot really hate someone. Especially not the two main protagonists, Takumi and Misaki., which are very loveable.

Then: The Story. It does not include much Action but it is sometimes funny and sometimes just cute and that continues in every chapter.

Finally: The Artwork. Not much to say about it, it is just very good.

So all in all 8/10

Kaichou wa Maid-sama! is a feel-good kind of shoujo manga for anyone who enjoys a happy ending and prince-like male characters.

I watched the anime some many years ago and decided to read the manga lately because I wanted to see how the couple ended up. For anyone who's watched the anime, I strongly recommend reading the manga because there are more characters and the story has more depth (yet with the same amount of clichés).

Story: Maid-sama has a bit of a Cinderella vibe to it. Misaki, the female protagonist, comes from a lower-class family who slaves away at school as School President and ... then works hard at her part-time job at the Maid Café to support her family financially. Her male counterpart has a mysterious background but known to be from a very wealthy family (with hints of nobility). I guess you could say that there's nothing original about the storyline of this manga. Even the parts where Maid Café holds special days are reminiscent of Ouran Host Club. Originality aside, it's still an enjoyable story without any gaps or missing pieces that leave readers unsatisfied.

Art: The manga is well-drawn. The maid outfits are delightful (especially when they have special events). Most importantly, the males are all handsome. =)

Character: This is where Maid-sama scored the lowest. The characters all lack depth. Every character appears very one-dimensional. Takumi is literally perfect; Misaki calls him an "alien" but his abilities make him more of a god. His superpowers are just short of teleportation, flying and laser eyes. On the other hand, Misaki is an even bigger disappointment. Fujiwara created Misaki as a "tough Prez" who hates males and does everything on her own, always giving her 105%. However, she ends up relying on Takumi a lot and she becomes like any other lovesick chick around him. Worst, he beats her in everything without effort. Or maybe I'm being too critical...

Enjoyment: As a fan of reverse harems, I was kind of disappointed that no other males ever stood a chance in this manga. And that's not to say there weren't some great suitors and potential in there! But I guess that's why Maid-sama isn't categorized as a reverse harem. This manga is strictly a romance between two characters from beginning to end. The enjoyment comes from seeing them endure the hardships and drama to reach a happily ever after.

Final word: A feel-good kind of manga that doesn't stand out in any real way. The most spectacular aspect of this manga would be Usui Takumi... Literally, the PERFECT male specimen. From looks to talent to skill to background to undying commitment to his girl.. WOW.

What a pair of idiots. In a completely good way of course, but seriously, when it comes to the main characters, what a pair of idiots.

So, since I found out that Kaichou wa Maid Sama ended recently, I decided to finally go and start reading it yesterday, since it's been on my to do list for ages. I'm already on Chapter 57. Yep. Haven't been able to put it down.

I just want to write a quick summary of what I personally feel are the highlights, and good supporting points, of this series:

1. The characters. They are all excellent, and I particularly love how, for ... once in a shoujo manga, both of the main characters are dominant and aggressive, won't take no for an answer and are always fighting hard to get what they want. In this way it's similar to Special A, but I enjoy that while these characters do have a sense of rivalry at times, that's not an overwhelming theme to the manga. The interpersonal dynamic between the two leads is always very well played out and I really appreciate that.

As for the characters themselves, while there are definite elements of their personalities that I could connect to other popular shoujo characters ie. Takumi is rich and has family secrets like Tamaki in Ouran Host Club and Misaki is ultra-hard working like Hikari in Special A or Tohru from Fruits Basket, I still found both of the characters interesting and rather refreshing because I feel like the author approached these personality traits in new ways and didn't just rely on archetypes. They also have different combinations of traits than any other shoujo I've ever read, but I don't have a highly extensive knowledge on the subject so perhaps this is just something new to me.

The supporting cast is also very strong, quite interesting. Not every background character has a superb and unique personality, but I feel that's also very reflective of life and they still all filled out the environment of the story very well and made for great sub plots. I've so far spent a good few minutes reading where my only response has been going "Aww, Yukimura!!" and "Oh god, not again Kanou-kun!"

2. Story. While the story isn't anything particularly new or original, it's presented in a fresh, clean and well-executed manner. I'm over halfway through reading at the time of this review and I haven't gotten bored yet. In fact, I've barely put it down to go to work. The sub plots are also cute and sometimes more entertaining than the main plots in particular chapters, so kudos on a job well done with that.

3. Art. While I find it's nothing to write home about, it's clean, the designs are cute and it backs up a solid story and wonderful characters. Also, some of the chibi and super-deformed character illustrations are absolutely adorable and are some of my favorites of the series.

I don't actually have any real complaints about this manga so far, the only reason it's rated a 9 and not a 10 is because I feel that it lacks the strength in absolutely all areas that would deserve a 10 and make it absolutely superbly outstanding in my mind.

So, to summarize! This is a very character driven story, if you enjoy strong female heroines AND strong male companions as well as cute and hilarious supporting characters, give it a shot!

Beginning its publication in 2005 and ending in its long-running serialization in 2013, 8 years later, Maid-Sama is a classic in the romance and Shoujo section. Of course, do not be disheartened by the Shoujo tag as a male because this manga appeals to all rom-com lovers!

Early on, Maid-Sama utilizes many generic tropes and situations in an almost episodic fashion. But while these tropes are typical, they are so in concept, but not in execution, with there always being a spin on things to change it up, mostly due to the characters and their interactions with others.

At ... a certain point, the story enters a more serious tone and loses its episodic feel. Quite often, this means that everything becomes very melodramatic and the comedy aspect of the story disappears or drops in quality. But this is not the case for Maid-sama, while there is a dip in the comedy, the story is void of cringe-worthy melodrama that would normally reduce the realism of the characters, the main issue is rather interesting and intertwines well with Maid-Sama’s underlying theme of identity.

Now I will admit that sometimes I was guilty of skim reading just to get to those scenes of romance between Usui and Misaki because some of the smaller stories were just plain boring. And when I did reached those scenes that revitalised my love for the manga, they were cut short and the next chapter would start in a completely new situation which would contribute to the feeling of boredom for that chapter.

What I love about Maid-Sama is its presentation of identity. It is the basis for many issues that come up within the manga, including the ‘main’ issue. Misaki must deal with maintaining her image as a strong figure while hiding the fact that she is a maid, which if revealed, would ultimately bring down her meticulously crafted image. This of course creates immense pressure on her, which the manga does explore. Even Usui must deal with it himself as he is constantly drawn into a life that he doesn’t want to lead. Some minor characters do also have similar conflicts though obviously not explored to the same level as the 2 main characters.

The manga goes further by presenting human intimacy as a way to accept one’s self and embrace one’s own weaknesses, ultimately allowing individuals to a sense of freedom in expressing themselves.

Misaki is a very interesting, inspiring and well done character. Its always nice to see a well written female character and Misaki definitely delivers. She always presents herself as being stern and hard working as she can’t present herself to others as anything short of that. It is with Usui that she can detach a bit and reveal her weaknesses that add a layer of not only realism, but most importantly relatability to her character. Through the course of the story, she develops into someone who lowers her facade thanks to her interactions with Usui.

It wouldn’t be possible to talk about Misaki without talking about Usui. The perfect male, seemingly the personification of the word perfection. Yes, he is a generic Shoujo male character, but that doesn’t mean he’s not special. There is just something about him, even though I’m telling myself that he is unrealistic and generic, I can’t help but love his character. The way he completely changes the mood as soon as he is in panel or the mysterious life he leads.

The relationship between Usui and Misaki is wholesome, very wholesome. Those brief moment of intimacy we see at the end of each chapter between them is always so special, yet too scarce. When Misaki always blushes as Usui makes some suave statement and leans in for a kiss. It gets me every time.

But I have some small issues with their relationship. The name-calling and awkwardness never leave, Misaki still blushes and gets weird as soon as Usui gets intimate. It made me feel as though they weren’t necessarily progressing together and didn’t really get close. I understand that for Misaki its all very foreign and unfathomable, but I mean how does she not get more comfortable. It makes it even worse when the relationship from a character development viewpoint is meant to make Misaki more comfortable with her true character. Furthermore, this is purely subjective, but I would have liked more time spent on Usui and Misaki just straight up chilling and doing romantic things together without anyone else with them.

The one-shots of them when they are married are so heartwarming and really wholesome to see, while also displaying a closure to a relationship that didn’t seem like it had come to fully mature.

Another criticism is Usui. Now, this might be because of my lack of experience with Shoujo, however, his character lacks the weakness and vulnerability that Misaki has, stripping him of any realism. But I think this is just a Shoujo trope.

The side cast is nothing special, they are just there as devices for development for Usui and Misaki. As mentioned previously some characters deal with their identity, but it is not pursued much later on.

Some side characters, in the end, get some closure, but it almost seems as though it was done for the sake of providing some sort of end for said characters.

Hiro Fujiwara is really talented with her art. It is definitely top tier for rom-com. The panning shots of large areas are really detailed and even the intimate scenes are adorned with nice flowery patterns that contribute to the romantic feel perfectly.

Sometimes the paneling was all over the place and speech bubbles were confusing, but it only took a slight backtrack to fully comprehend the page.

Some of the chapters were really boring, especially when they succeed an intimate scene. But after once the overarching plot began to take the main focus, that wasn’t an issue anymore.

The characters are really likable and I just adored every scene that Usui and Misaki were together.

Maid-Sama may seem generic at a surface level, but it takes a keen eye to see that it is unique and a story that incorporates relatable themes with a solid story and loveable cast.

Definitely recommend this for romance lovers! An absolute classic!

I often read the same kind of reviews so I thought I should write what I'd like to see in reviews and it's ridiculously hard to find, spoiler free answers to the questions:

Is the ending good? Does the main couple end up together? Is it worth my time?

I absolutely HATE SPOILERS with all my might! But I also don't see why I'd want to waste my time with a story that ends badly or one where, after all their trouble, the couple doesn't end up together. I also don't like to waste my time browsing through incredibly long opinionated reviews only to be more confused ... than I was before, not find the answers I was looking for and usually bumping into unwanted spoilers. Because of all this I intend to make my reviews brief, focusing on answering these three questions.

So with that being said, this is my very first review, and what better manga to start than my favorite shoujo, 'Kaichou wa Maid-sama!'.

I'm answering in a completely spoiler free way, with a simple YES or NO, the questions:
Is the ending good? Does the main couple end up together? Is it worth my time?

This story is a classic shoujo and at the same time breaks a lot of clichés. If you like strong female characters, cool funny male leads, a relationship that doesn't begin at the end of the story but actually in the middle where you can see their development as a couple trough their troubled times, this is the perfect manga for you.

Of course this is all my opinion, but I'd say I'm a pretty ordinary, sane and a romantic person, just so you can have an idea of who wrote this.

What is love? To me, it is a passionate feeling greater than any other that has the power to completely change personalities, is the cause of many actions one wouldn't do under a normal circumstance, and the driving force that resides within all of us. Kaichou was Maid-sama is by far the simplest and most beautiful representation of this ideology that I have ever seen in any anime or manga, solidifying its spot as one of my favourite manga of all time.

Although the anime did leave a large gaping hole in my heart, the manga was quick to pick up off of where the ... anime left off and continued this legacy of a story that is the battle for love and acceptance between Ayuzawa Misaki and Usui Takami. With fantastic artwork leaving every panel filled with a sense of either love or awe, character development from my wildest dreams, and a gripping plot until the end, Fujiwara has outdone herself and deserves all the praise one can give towards the series.

ART: 9/10

Although I myself am not well versed in the wide variety of art styles in anime, the ability to appreciate what it is worth and the effort and willpower that made it possible for the artist to create such a broad range of visuals is beyond anything that I could have expected. From chibi to moe, to even gorgeously detailed double-page spreads, it's obvious that every single panel was done with a clear visual idea in mind - one that shows just how much blood, sweat, and tears were put into this work that took almost a decade to complete.

CHARACTER & DEVELOPMENT: 9/10

In terms of character development and character arcs, I honestly could not have asked for better narrative flow and overall conclusion. Although the show boasts an impressive range of characters, it is masterfully able to make it so that each and every one of them reaches a certain point of change, whether big or small, giving the reader an even greater feeling of satisfaction after completing the manga.

STORY & PLOT: 8/10

The plot development took an extremely unexpected turn compared to what I was initially expecting, particularly due to the fact that my friends spoiled the end of the show before I read it, which surprisingly lead to an experience which enhanced the journey rather than the destination. Moreover, the particular aspect that kept me continuously think about the hidden implications between the lines was how certain themes such as familial relationships and social hierarchy and status become more prominent - something that was certainly fresh and innovative to read. This is all made even more impressive over the fact that the story manages to keep the romance as the main plot in tandem with all of this going on in the background, creating a provocative story mountain that reaches peaks sooner than expected and descends at a slow yet reasonable pace.

ENJOYMENT: 10/10

I highly recommend this to pretty much anybody no matter if you yourself are a shounen or shojo in real life or at heart, as sometimes the best romance dramas are those that aren't targeted to a specific audience but can rather be enjoyed from anybody's perspective.

Tl;dr - wide range of stellar artstyle, characters that are able to all go through proper physical and emotional arcs, a story that challenges the normal shojo rom-com themes which keeps every chapter fresh and attractive, and all of which are suitable for everybody no matter who you are.
