Shouta Aikawa is an energetic third grader who is fond of insects. He lovingly raises a rhinoceros beetle larva for two months, naming it Moriking. However, instead of transforming into a beetle at the end of its larval stage, Moriking overcomes the wall of evolution and evolves into a human being! Furthermore, Shouta's beetle pet is in fact an insect king, born every hundred million years. As part of Moriking's trial to become the king of all insects, he must venture out into the wider world and survive. In doing so, he quickly recognizes Shouta as his savior and owner, and wishes to remain with the Aikawa family.

Although Shouta has no qualms about accepting a humanoid beetle who can fly and walk on walls, his high school sister Shouko does. Somehow persuaded by Shouta's pleas, Shouko and their parents ultimately decide to accept the insect king into their family. But a huge challenge lies ahead for the owners of this young and attractive beetle: they must help Moriking defeat the other four competing candidate kings to become the lord of the forest, who rules over all the insects in the world.

Honestly, I was super surprised to see all the negative reviews. I absolutely loved Moriking. I think a lot of these low point reviews take the manga way too seriously. Moriking is just Moriking. It's not meant to have a serious plot or follow a traditional humor style. The entire series feels like a thoroughly enjoyable fever dream.

Story: The story is built around a joke. There is a coherent plot line, but this is a light comedy. It's not supposed to be super deep or plot heavy.

Art: Not a good art critic, but I thought it was pretty good.

Character: Amazing. The characters read more

‘Moriking’, the story of a bug which evolves to a humanlike form and then fights for world peace… Sounds hilarious, and the first chapters were really good comedy, but then the fire nation… ehm, I mean: then it got more chapters than “needed”...

- Story (3/10):
I don’t like the concept that a comedy manga doesn’t or just slightly need a main story/goal, they are mostly not successful enough either. However, there are exceptions like ‘Gintama’ which goes full comedy, but I prefer a much better storytelling and deepness like in ‘Bakuman’. Sadly, ‘Moriking’ is 98% the type of full comedy. You have a very weak redline, read more

Moriking was a manga I found at chapter 1 on the shounen jump app when it came out and read it weekly from chapter 1 to I think 35( the last chapter). it wasn't terrible but if i had to read more than 1 chapter a week i dont think I would have kept reading, the story was sorta interesting because it was pretty unusual and it was kinda funny at times but also pretty boring at other parts. I wouldn't have read this more than once a week so if you are thinking of reading from chapter 1 until the end i can't recommend read more

Of the three series Jump introduced in the spring, Moriking was the one that got the least attention. Ironically, it was also the one that lasted the longest. While TPGW and Bone Collection became proud members of the U19 Club, Moriking lasted halfway through January 2021, getting to feature in the One Piece Chapter 1000 special, and getting its own acrylic stand souvenir at Jump Festa 2021.

And honestly, it got lucky. Moriking didn't last because there was anything particularly good about it, just that it happened to debut in a year where a lot of major series were ending. It also helped that Bone Collection read more
