Chapter 1: the protagonist gets bullied for owning an anime shirt and sighs at being at the bottom of the class hierarchy
Chapter 3: the protagonist gets to torture pretty and popular girl with no repercussions
This should tell you what kind of manga Torture Tournament is. You could almost hear the author shouting “Fucking normies reeeeeee” while writing it.
Here’s the basic setting of the plot: a phone is reverse pickpocketed on the protagonist. A limousine arrives in front of his house, as some shady organisation thinks he’s an owner of the phone. Despite repeatedly stating he just picked up the phone outside and has no idea
...
what’s going on, the shady organisation forcibly picks him up anyway. Turns out, the phone is some kind of identification for participants in tournament when people compete in torturing info out of someone. Because it makes total sense for highly illegal organization to just introduce some random guy to the system despite it being completely obvious he’s not the person they are looking for. Totally believable decision right there. Anyway, our protagonists goes from “noo, I swear I’m innocent, let us out of here” to waterboarding someone really quick. Apparently that’s how people’s mind work, according to the author.
Few more torture sessions and some poorly written story later, the manga ends, in as disappointing fashion as it begun. My expectations were low but damn.
It should be quite obvious that this manga depends wholly on a shock value. The thing is, it doesn’t do properly even that. It’s not even guro, it’s just a bit of violent imagery. Tame just right enough to be completely bland and boring. This won’t appeal neither to people who don’t like guro as it’s distasteful enough to turn off an average reader, nor people who like guro as it isn’t violent enough to show some actual gore. If you’re not convinced yet how little it cares about the manga making any sense, at one point the torture turns into a hot lesbian sex instead, just because.
Overall, fail in every way except maybe for the art that I guess is average.
