Otaku no Video is an undeniable classic and a fascinating look at the anime culture of the time

I also really like Oreimo's first season where it's moreabout the anime fandom itself and not the siscon stuff. Lots of references and i like the mini-war between bright cutesy kid anime and darker serious anime within the show
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

Animegataris was pretty enjoyable until it went off the rails. There are three schools of thought about it:
- The creators didn't know where it was going from the start;
- they didn't give a shit;
- they had a stroke halfway through.

Shirobako is one of my favorite anime and the only reason P.A. Works isn't my least favorite studio of all time. I love how every episode is about a different issue in the animation production so it never gets repetitive, whereas its only flaws are just a couple of comedic scenes that are kinda dumb and out of place.

If you want to learn more about the industry, Bakuman. would be the place to start. Of course the "a couple of high schoolers breaking into the industry" part is fiction. But other than that and some other story drama, it's quite accurate to reality. I also remember Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! which was about some amateur animators. I often hear about Shirobako but I haven't watched it myself.

Oreimo had a good start but it steadily went downhill. Even though I am a sucker for harem stories, this one was too forced and ridiculous even for me. You can definitely learn a few thing about being an otaku in Japan. But no one besides otaku would actually watch it, so it's kinda pointless.

Genshiken. The series feels more authentic and full of heart.

I guess Bakuman being about manga and the industry counts too. If so, it's my top favorite even tho Genshiken is the better series when it's about Otaku culture im general.

Does Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na! count? Because that would get my vote easily.

Genshiken and Eizouken are both excellent.

Genshiken is much more enjoyable as a reflection of fans, though it's more of a time capsule now.

Eizouken is a really excellent vessel for communicating how the industry operates behind the scenes (much like Shirobako), but packaged in a fun, character driven dramedy with top notch production value.

Genshiken actually foreshadows and critiques the degeneracy and social withdrawal aspects of hardcore otaku lifestyles. It even at times feels 100% authentic and almost affectionate about it. It's not purely a judgmental hit piece on Otakus lifestyles in Japan.

The fact it actually displays the life of even an Otaku that is a "semi-surface-level normie or even a Chad-Otaku" of the group makes it even that much more authentic (one who is just extremely casual about Anime and another who actually dates people in real life while still being just as hardcore as the rest). And there is always the outsiders, a person or people who are not even into the culture that are closely associated by friendship which is actually the thing that bridges the gap to fully roll out the premise. in this case it is "Saki Kasukabe". Without her in the story the entire Anime would not be interesting to watch at all.

Though in my opinion, everything starts to goes down hill after the 1st season when reality hits with unrealistic culture shock that most Japanese Otakus actually get a job and live out a real life in society right after college and such group of friends end up attracting a harem of girls in the group in the end too?... whatever. lol

Unlike what happens with a vast majority of Western Anime otakus in real life. From all my the acquaintances in College that were really hardcore into Anime at the time back in the late 90s and early 2000s, 2 of them committed suicide, 3 of them ended up becoming Jobless shut-ins likely still living in their mother's basement playing video games all day and all night online, and the last half of us actually got careers and/or got married and only two of us are actually content or happy with our lives today. lol

Where these days I don't even consider myself a real Otaku when watching something like Genshiken anymore because I don't buy body pillows, collect figurines, or even collect physical copies of manga anymore, etc... The only thing I kept up with at most was still buying up Official Physical copies of Anime like they were simply just trading cards.

Any of your old friends become freeters? That sometimes happens in real life but goes unacknowledged in most anime.

Aren't "freeters" generally those who drop out of school or don't completely graduate college?

lol I doubt anyone I knew in college became a 'Kintarou' freeters. At least no one I was acquainted with. If anyone did, like you said it's pretty unacknowledged and unknown.

If anyone did that it would leave no way to really keep in touch with them unless one was already good friends with them to begin with.

One doesn't usually get close enough to people who don't stay around long like that in college. Even during my freshmen year there were some students I hung out with occasionally in the dorm common room that eventually I just noticed one day they suddenly just stopped showing up to school half way through. It's possible they just dropped out and became "freeters".

Well, you said you know 3 people who stay home all day. Wouldn't it be harder to stay in touch with someone like that?

I don't personally keep in touch with them but my closest friend from college did (the friend who actually showed up to my wedding). He is the one who let me know what happened to most of our acquaintances from college. It was mostly gossip at the last college reunion we had, because each time one is held less and less of our acquaintances from school actually show up to them. He is not even an Anime Otaku anymore either.
