In games that feature romance options do you prefer gender locked options or the ability to romance regardless of players gender?

In games when I play as a male character - I only do romance with Opposite Sex
In games when I play as a female character - I play with 0 romance options, I reject everything and go through the game objectives/plot.

I know these are fictional stories and are not always supposed to be realistic but the recent trend where every character is bisexual really takes me out of it.
Games don't usually have a lot of romance options (understandable, it's not easy writing romantic subplots for so many characters) and the need to represent many sexual minorities means that sexual minorities end up feeling overrepresented sometimes. I think ME3 did a decent job balancing giving choice while still having most characters be heterosexual.
1/3 of the characters are gay or bisexual which is still too high in terms of irl statistics but way better than games where most or even all characters are gay or bisexual.

Pour one out for those who play Cyberpunk as male V but can't have Judy.

I like the ability to romance regardless of gender. I played Cyberpunk 2077 and playing as a guy I was pretty annoyed that I couldn't do the romance route with either Judy or River despite liking both way more than Panam/Kerry or whatever.
Tbf in a lot of games it doesn't take much other than letting male characters go down the romance routes designed for females and vice versa. It's an option and extra options are always nice.

I kind of like gender lock or I should say I like when characters have their own sexual preferences with a variety of options. Stardew Valley did a pretty good job of it by having no gender lock but some of the characters will say they didn't ever expect to wind up with the opposite of their gender preference.

I dont really understand the question since if such options exist, I always play as a male anyway.

whats the difference between skyrim and mass effect? I played me1 and 2, only rom liara, only played skyrim as male, had a few waifus.
I only have a couple of runs of those games, havent played like a super lot of em.
what is gender locking?

Gender locking is where a game that features romance locks specific romances behind what gender the main character is. For example Miranda in ME2 can only be romanced by maleshep whereas garrus can only be romanced by femshep. The difference between mass effect and skyrim is that in skyrim you can romance anyone regardless of gender but in Mass Effect the characters have specific gender preferences

personally I think player choice is king in any game, and rpgs in particular. I usually only go for the female romance options, regardless of my characters gender, so when options are locked its kind of annoying. fortunately games where relationships provide perks or buffs allow you to become "best friends" at least to get the gameplay advantages even if the romance itself is locked away

Tbh, in many games, all that is required is for male characters to follow the romance paths intended for ladies, and vice versa. It's an option, and having more options is always a plus.

That depends on if the character I want to date is locked to my character's gender or not.

Personally prefer characters to have individual sexualities, I think it makes them and the world a lot more fully realised. Nowadays especially I would much rather have a main character that isn't a self insert so not a fan of games where every character is down no matter what you are, takes me out of it.

It's annoying since I usually play female characters in games, but I think having gender locked options is fair. In Mass Effect I would definitely prefer Lawson or Tali, but their gender preference is part of their character.

i don't care about the representation aspects i just think it's funny and gives you more customization for the game, it's kind of disappointing when they don't let you just choose to go out with any character you want though

the answer is i dont play the romance options

the only games with romance options i like are VNs where you get railroaded down the handful of carefully selected options they bothered to write.

in which case ill take yuri lmao. i respect yaoi but im not into it. the straight stuff i think is maybe harder to write in a way thats appealing

#TeamLiara
Though what's really annoying isn't that I missed out on some romances by playing female, but that ME2 really only has Garrus as a good choice, despite having the most squad mates.

It'd be great if more games had romance options that were not gender locked.

But I understand why they are.

Does Skyrim even have properly written romances? I haven't played far enough, but unless those romances are provided by fan mods, I highly doubt that a TES game would have a narrative-driven romance.

Anyway, I'm leaning towards gender-locked options. I just feel like it enhances character's personality and individuality, regardless of whether it's true or not, but I also really liked how "playersexual" romance options were handled in Dragon Age 2. It gave a lot of options and wiggle room. On the other hand, in Inquisition I was stuck with two gay male romance options that I couldn't care less about -_- which was a direct consequence of gender-locking. I guess it all depends on what particular game we're talking about and how much I like particular characters (or find them attractive, if they're male), which is not surprising.
It's also worth mentioning that I used to play female characters a lot in the past, simply because it was the only way for me to pursue romances with guys that I liked. From this perspective, not having gender-locked options is better. So, even though I still favor the gender-locked variant, there are many nuances for/against when it comes to both of these options.

There actually was one character who got a good amount of dialogue, that being Serana from the Dawnguard dlc, but of all the people she wasn't a romance option.

Ironically, Skyrim is the only TES game that I never properly completed. I was never a big fan of open-world games, but some years ago I resolved to do a big TES marathon starting with Arena and pretty much completed every single game in the series, except for mobile games. By the time I got to Skyrim, I was so freaking burned out that I just forced myself to do the main quest on the easiest difficulty, then abandoned the game and never got the urge to come back to it :) but Dawnguard DLC always looked like something I'd enjoy the most because it adds vampirism and lycanthropy, and I always loved these. So, maybe I'll meet that Serana someday :p

Regardless. I just care about the story/dialogue responses then the limitations of how it's written to be presented to make sense.

I think having romance options be restricted to that character's own sexuality can add a lot more depth to them and helps make them not come off as mindless NPCs, but I can see how it would be disappointing not being able to persuade specific romantic interests as a result of that, especially if they were really the only ones you wanted to go for.

I think I ultimately prefer the former, but I could go either way, honestly.

Yeah I could see it being a double edged sword for game development, where if you go with specific preferences it makes them more realistic while limiting player choice dissapointing many people. However if you went with the non gender locked option you would be able to satisfy many players but at a cost of making the characters most fleshed out.I'm on the fence about it but I can see how they would both be appealing

got it. so basically that char of micheal in kotor 2. only exists if you play as female. never got him as only played as male both times. Brianna is who you get as a man.

I prefer gender locking. It makes the characters seem more real. Gives them more individuality.

It reduces immersion when every character can be romanced by both sexes. When you know the characters will be receptive regardless of your sex , it takes away a bit from the world. Because then it's blatantly done for gameplay reasons rather than story ones.

I think it should be like the sims series, where you can date whoever you want and as many people as you want, regardless of gender.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

Regardless of gender.

If you don't like a protagonist dating someone from a certain gender, then don't pick that option.
Simple as that.
