I've heard a lot about the success of the game, so I'm kind of interested in this anime even though I've never played the game before. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether the anime would require the viewers to get into the game to understand the characters and the story or not.

Well the story you get in game is from chapters 1 though 4 that involves the Sakura Empire and the Eagle Union for the main storyline. The events that happen are what kind of flesh out the events that happened and everything else. Also, being from the offical discord in the al-lore club room it's suggested that the anime should be treated as a standalone timeline, like the mangas Slow Ahead and Queen's Orders.

You'll be fine. You might appreciate it more if you had WWII naval battle knowledge because the game likes adding references to the shipgirls' real life counterparts.

Probably the only thing you will need to know in regards to the game is that the characters in the anime are anthropomorphized versions of WWII warships. Based on the newest PV, I think everything else will be explained by the show itself.

Also they will likely introduce a lot of characters in a short amount of time, so you would have an advantage if you played the game already or at least are familiar with WWII warships.

What's the difference?

By the looks of the trailer, yes. It seems they're going for an anime original story with some resemblance to the game's story.

Would highly recommend playing the game though

I've actually wanted to get into the game, but haven't had the time to play it yet. Seems quite popular though, and a lot of the girls seem pretty hot as well. definitely interested

You should check it out. It's autoplay friendly too. I play it a lot at work.

It's fine if u wanna play the game first or not play the game at all. But to be honest, it'll make much more sense if u play the game, such as the relation between all ship in there, main storyline that connects the game and etc. But if u want the surprise just watch the anime on October 3rd or 4th
(Note: u need at least 3 GB if u wanna play the game)

I think so, yes.
The anime retells the first 6 chapters of the game and even then it's not a complete retelling.

The way I see it:
- The vanilla version of the game (original release) pretty much introduces Azur Lane fighting against the Red/Crimson Axis. It's basically WW2 with shipgirls and there was nothing mentioning about the Sirens or anything like that.
- The present versions of the game (including events) is when the story gets altered by introducing Sirens as the big bad in the WW2 events.

TL,DR: Basically, the Sirens are being introduced early on in the anime by using the first 6 chapters of the game. Although we are familiar with what's going on, the anime is also something new to us who have played the game.

You play the game to get your waifus and become more hyped when you have your waifus animated. In my opinion, if you don't play the game you will probably hesitate finishing the anime. Don't worry about gacha thing, it's not like FGO and you can get your waifus if you're diligent enough.

I have not played any game regarding this genre, but since I know naval history pretty well, in fact more ships than there is in the game, it is a no brainer and no problem to me. If you actually knows naval ship classifications and categories, the show is more fun is you have not palyed the game, since you would be excited for all the new characters and designs they are introducing each episode. Overall if you know things about warships than this show is a no brainer!

This too, actually.
I've seen some WW2 and Naval ships fans socialising in the Azur Lane forums about why these characters are drawn like this, what these character quotes mean, why they have this personality or even some history about them in real life.

It's actually fun learning a bit of history with them, lol.

Yes, you should watch it if you haven't played game only. From what I've seen it's mostly rated low by fans of the game. Otherwise it should be somewhere 7+ easily.

Unlike other gacha, Azur Lane has the best probabilities. Azur Lane is literally the best when it comes to gacha.
