| DBZ was my #1 anime before joining MAL and during some time while being a user here. It was only until 2020 when I started and completed Naruto (and Shippuden) that this changed. So I guess yes, strictly speaking, I found my favorite anime after joining MAL. |
| Before. Became an Index fan when I watched Railgun S back in 2013. Joined MAL in 2014 mainly to keep track on animes I've watched and upcoming sequels. |

Even though I obviously couldn't post on the forums without an account and didn't lurk to read much either, I did periodically visit MAL in the few years prior to that as it came up as a top result when looking for more information about a certain series I was considering watching via search engines such as Bing, Google, etc. I just saw it then as an alternative to IMDB which I knew focused on anime. I would usually split my time looking up info about a certain series between IMDB (because that's what I was used to doing for all other films and TV series prior, including anime ones like the Ghibli pantheon), Wikipedia, MAL, and other anime info, database, and news sites that I didn't even consciously seek out at the time. |
| I don't really have one particular favorite that I put above all others, 'cause I love all my favorites in different ways. But I had definitely found at least 5 of my Top 10 Favorites before i joined MAL, as I started watching anime in 2012 and didn't even know about this site until like 2017. |

| It's half and half for me: I watched half my faves (namely Spirited Away, Nanoha, Oban Star Racers, Machikado Mazoku, and Goblin Slayer) before joining anime sites. The rest (namely Princess Principal, Heartcatch Precure, Kurau Phantom Memory, Shigofumi and Angelic Layer) I found after joining such sites, and through such sites (Anime-Planet in particular, which I find easier to navigate in terms of discoverability). So I guess than means I was decent enough at finding stuff I liked before but certainly joining anime sites has helped me with discovering more such stuff (e.g. I don't think there's any way I could have found Kurau and Heartcatch Precure by myself). |
