We can already see anime getting accepted into the Western culture, especially in the USA (where it's not THAT popular yet).
There is still a negative connotation to the term "Anime". When most people hear this term, they picture the cringy Weebs/Weeaboos on Social Media. They basically ruin the reputation of Anime.

I do see Anime becoming even more popular in the West than it is right now. The taboo around it will fade and a lot of people will start to love it. It might even start overruling other shows like: soaps, Netflix series, Western cartoons etc...

Let's see what you guys think about this topic.

I do know that it's already quite popular, but I'm mainly talking about the negative connotation about Anime. That still turns people off. I do see that negative connotation fading eventually.
If you're a weeaboo, change.

Well I hope that there won't be more cringy weebs/weeaboos because of this, but I wouldn't mind it at all if Anime is watched by the majority of the world.

Yeah, true. I'm mainly talking about the negative connotation Anime has to the West, which prevents people from watching it (because it's "cringy").

That is the direction anime has been heading, it has become more mainstream and normal than ever. I don’t think it will ever replace normal movies and television in the west, but it definitely has the potential to become bigger than it already is.
How am I supposed to decide what to write, I can't choose an anime to watch to save my life, you think I can pick a signature?

I'd prefer if it didn't happen. I THINK the way western entertainment is, there's no turning back now.
netflix is already training animators in japan. as long as hollywood and the rest won't offer anything of value, people will continue to look into anime.
nerd culture as a whole is widely accepted now, as watered down and horrid it became. clearly they're more open towards cartoons.
the most likely scenario is that america will start making anime-esque shows. but with diversity, propaganda, and whatnot. aka, they have no clue what sells and think that zoomers just like cartoons with big eyes or something. they'll attempt to just merge the visual aspect, and fail harder than ever.

It already is though.
Compared to other medias at least.
Anime is just a click away with Netflix and Crunchyroll for the western audiences. They are more accessible than most western movies nowadays. And quarantine just helped it a lot.

I wasted all my time in rewatching to the point of my rewatch total is higher than my overall anime total lmao

In my opinion anime will still be a niche (and I hope so)
Read light novels!

So that means that there'll be an anime one day about a lesbian black woman fighting for trans rights? And that every anime will contain some sort of message like that?

Plz no.

Anime has been mainstream in my country (France) since 1978.

But everyone keep saying it's already mainstream. Which one is it? Imo it will never be seen as truly normal. Just because a lot of people watch the anime available on netflix doesn't change the fact that being an anime fan isn't fashionable. People will quickly remind you every chance they get, even on this website.

Anime is mainstream though like the people who dislike it are a small minority. And the other people are usually in they’re 40s or older.

That negative connotation won't go away. Since that's so deeply rooted in the minds of people. Anime can't change the 1970s idea and no matter how popular it gets, how different it is. In the end that idea that animation is for kids will remain.

Anime is becoming part of Western culture already. It's not as mainstream as other television/movies here, but you have major streaming platforms producing and promoting their own anime now. I compare this to when I had to buy bootleg VHS/VCDs in the 1990s to watch any anime. It's unbelievable seeing the growth of anime over the past 25 years in America.

What, how is anime "as a medium" mainstream or big in the West? What do you people mean by that?

Anime is still somewhat niche, like @Nubielle puts it, it isn't fashionable to be an anime fan. Plus, besides the popular titles and such, not many people are gonna watch seasonals, let alone works from the past...

Things you have to consider:

  • Is it socially acceptable to talk about in casual conversation? (the answer regarding anime is: only in some cases)
  • Do most people around you know what you're talking about, even if they haven't seen the specific show? (for anime: it heavily depends on the age and interests of the person)
  • Is the media itself part of everyday life (like advertisements, being talked about on other mainstream media)? (for anime: just because it's very prevalent on the internet doesn't mean it's everywhere irl)

We talk here about most popular shows, you don't have to watch 5 animes per season to be anime watcher, shows like kimetsu no yaiba or SNK are more popular than most TV series so I would call it mainstream.

Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.

God forbid anime becomes normal in the west. I hope it stays the way it is right now.
