This week, I decided to watch anime directed by directors that made my favorite anime. So far, they are pretty good. However, I can't tell if it's because of the directors or if it's because I chose good anime.

If it has...Good...Directing...Lol

The story itself has nothing to do with the director, so if that's why you like an anime then that's another thing. Now how the story presents itself. That's a result of the director.

If you watch something by Yuasa for instance, then you can IMMEDIATLY notice that it's from him without anyone telling you beforehand. Because he has such a distinct style when it comes to directing.

Well, whenever the anime is enjoyable for me, disregarding whether it's faithful to the source or not.

I think it's just a matter of personal feelings, because there isn't a mathematical formula to measure the perfect pacing, OST and every other aspect.

Is every second of the viewing experience delightful? Great directing.

Do you feel like the plot is good, but you aren't enjoying it? Average or bad directing.

Step 1: Observe the directing.

Step 2: Think to yourself "this is good" or "this is bad."

It's really not something you should need help with.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

How can you tell if it's good? If it's shot like Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou.

Well I look at the cinematography and atmosphere if they got any. Some directors have a distinct touch so you know what you will get from those.

Hideaki Anno and the BeeTrain guy for example.

A film director controls a film's artistic and dramatic aspects and visualizes the screenplay (or script) while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfilment of that vision. The director has a key role in choosing the cast members, production design and all the creative aspects of filmmaking. Under European Union law, the director is viewed as the author of the film. - from Wikipedia

I can tell if a director is doing a great job when their directed anime's visual storytelling is remarkable enough in terms of flow, tone, anticipation, and composition to the point that it gets to a kino level. Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Sayo Yamamoto, and Kazuhiro Furuhashi are one of those whom I can think of, given their quality and finesse on their episode direction and directorial pieces over the years.

Also, I'd say that good directors are those who are self-aware of the material that they're adapting and tries to make the most out of it even if the source is bad by applying the right treatment and style that it deserves. Tsutomu Mizushima, Takashi Watanabe, and Hiroko Utsumi are ones who I think who fit this category. A good addition to this one is Park Sung-hoo, given his prior work in Vanishing Line and God of Highschool which both had strong direction despite their weak scripts.

When you start to have strong emotional reactions, not just once but multiple times within his/her work.

I feel like I usually just get a hunch from it. I can tell if it has bad directing or not just from personal feelings ig

I never look at this part when watching something. I just give shows a chance because they all deserve one. I will know after I see it if it has good staff or not. Tbh though, the writer of the show is probably far more important than who's directing it. A shit plot is a shit plot no matter how good the visuals and sound are. Shit characterization will be shit characterization as well no matter how much effort is in the visuals and sound. The writer more or less controls both of these.
There's no inherent right or wrong in this universe, but when we think with emotions rather than logic, we make things so.

In some anime universe, you two would get paired up by fans as some sort of yaoi bros.

Oh then let's add a few fighter jets in space and re-enact a classic Macross plot. xD

Tbh i don't know how to answer this question since its something you(or us) already now when watching and you keeping better at this with more anime you watch. To put its simple if you like what you watch it mean its good and have good director.

Just compare Ex-Arm with Attack on Titan and you already now which show has better director :D.

With more anime you watch you will also start to realize specific director have his own style and directing tool. Lets choose Director Naoko Yamada (K-On, Koe no Katachi, Hibike Euphonium). Her show identic with leg shot, attention to detail in sound and space, intimate characters acting, and flower language.
