Ishihama proving once again that he is a great director. After the horrendous adaptions of P4 and P3, P5 is the first adaption that captures the style and atomsphere of the game. It's still a game adaption though, so cut and skipped content is necessary, but as long as it's as well presented as this first episode, I dont' mind. It's my first time hearing the japanese voices. FukuJun's range as voice actor is always impressive. |

Never played the game nor watch the previous series so not totally sure what this world of Persona series will bring. Basically I get that he was part of a group of thieves where in the end he was caught and then we were shown flashback of who he was and how it all started. As a whole I guess I get that we jumped from time to time (present to past, past to present), but as I was watching I don't really get what is happening. In any case, seems like this is a mystery sort of show (which I typically love) and it spans for 2 cour of season so I hope the team behind this anime will put out a good plot and keep up the good animation it has such as for this 1st episode. |

What a cluster fuck of an episode. Did they even employ a director for this show or did they just do one scene after another as written in the script? Animation and music was pretty good but it all felt super rushed and slapped together. |

I am disappointed. The game had "Oomph!", but this first episode is underwhelming. Ren's capture was not engaging nor flashy like it felt in the game as it felt...."placid" When in the station the guard didn't feel intimidating enough nor did he make me feel there was a way out. Maybe because the anime didn't set up things that made me feel that way. The interrogation scene with Sae was really disappointing to me. The game did it better with the story being revised that way and you trying to remember because of the drugs. The blue butterfly (I forgot the name) coming up and doing that was unnecessary and stupid to me. Focus more on the story than stuff like this. The lack of intensity makes this lackluster. We then brush through events with Ren's past that explain why he's even with Sakura. Now I'm not mad they brush the drunken man scene, but it doesn't really help the experience watching. We don't get the "Guy was just trying to help and someone had him framed". Even the introduction to Kamoshida's castle and the Persona part was lackluster... so far? In my opinion Lackluster |

Much or most of the presentation of the first act was present in the anime it's the details that are normally covered with words that are missing. Or maybe because they skipped so many things just to get to the first castle. I feel they should've focused on setup and establishing some things. The Ren getting captured scene and his awakening are lackluster scenes to me. |

They fitted the beginning arc in parts and established most if not all the key events that really matters. In fact they even showed very nicely how the Navi app worked with a simple short scene. Yes the pacing is fast but no it isn't shortchanging the new audience that hasn't played the game. If your case in point was that character's introduction are lacking let me remind you this is episode 1 and they havent even explored any of the characters. The awakening scene was definitely weaker to the game's looks wise, but I felt it was still good. I aint ever going to compare video game graphic to a tv series one. |

Usually game adaptation suck bulls, let alone JRPG getting animated, which would usually boils down into slice of life or generic adventure. Even visual novel game which is easiest to be animated are so miserable , so in comparison, I think A1 does quite a good job for P5. Considering this only has 24 episodes, cut content is 100% mandatory, so don't expect all the dialogues and build up being presented. Plus in the game you got 3 options to choose when someone ask you question. In fact, people have been criticizing about P5 dialogues being too drawn out and being unnecessary wordy, and consider many of the dialogues a waste of time/ pointless. (Hint, cell phone messages are so pointless in game.) Maybe some people just have unrealistic expectation. |

And here we go! After putting in over 100+ hours into the game last year, it's great to see Persona 5 as an anime and my first impressions for the first episode are very positive. I was disappointing when I first heard that Production I.G wouldn't be doing the anime adaptation, but I think A-1 Pictures (note their subsidiary studio Cloverworks in the credits) did a really good job on the visuals and animation for the whole episode, with Ren's awakening scene being the best of the episode. The pacing is going to feel fast at times, but it's not a surprise when they have to cram a big game like Persona 5 into 24 episodes, so the stuff that they did cut out was fine. The first episode needs a big hook after all and Ren's awakening scene was just that hook needed. I noticed that Ren's phone is literally a Sony Xperia. Nice plug in. =P It's also the first time, apart from the Day Breakers special, that I've heard the Japanese voices for the characters, since I played the game with the impressive English dub. Apart from Kamoshida, the rest of the cast so far sounds great. =) So yeah, a great start so far and I hope A-1 doesn't screw up with this adaptation. |

The way they did it...was...unexciting to me. I have a hard time describing my disappointment. It's not "garbage", but it's disappointing. I did like how they showed how the Navi worked in the scene with Ryuji, but I disliked how the scenes in Kamoshida's castle lacked ton of intensity. It didn't feel...as bad compared to the game. The feeling isn't there. Like Joker's capture was lackluster to me. He didn't go out in a flashy way and his escape wasn't flashy either...that is part of Persona 5's charm in my opinion. It has a ton of style and this anime...doesn't really show it like that with this first episode. It concerns me. Sakura is fine...I feel they did him right in the first episode. Ren though? Nah...just....no....his situation is supposed to be unfortunate and when you combine the scene of him defending the lady to how he is treated due to his criminal record, you get behind and feel for him. However, so much detail was leftout. 24 episodes for this? This is my first experience watching a Persona anime despite seeing all the games. |

I'm not expecting 100% of the dialogue, but I am expecting a good experience and this first episode didn't provide with a good introductory experience. The world in Persona 5 is depressing and hard, but I have yet to really see or feel that. Ren was treated like he wasn't going to amount to anything due to the criminal record. However, when you see that it's more of him being framed and trying to help someone do you really want to get behind him. Then the capture of Ren SUCKEDDDDDDDDDD....I liked the Akechi part, but I wanted to see some action...not him just moving around.... He pulls one, but they are already on his ass. Another problem is since this doesn't happen do you not know that he was set-up. This isn't even a plot point like how it was in the game. This creates mystery. Also the interrogation with Sae ALSO SUCKED! That didn't even set up the re-telling of events. We get a blue butterfly....Is that butterfly Philemon? WHY DID WE GET THE BUTTEFLY!? I rather have the MC trying to remember to Sae than a butterfly conveniently bringing us back to the past. We didn't see the guy running for Mayor and we get time of the MC walking without detail to the towns. I am not asking for the perfect adaption. I am concerned. |

Talking about that Butterfly would be a spoiler, but it would get explained later. In the game we get that Butterfly too. It's true they didn't spend too much time on interrogation, but the point is in anime standard, they pretty much NEED to get to the Persona scene in ep1 so normal audience who never played the game can get hooked up in the very first episode. Like I said, this is not a game which you control your own pacing, you have to pace it to fit audience's taste. If they didn't showcase the Persona in first episode, many audience probably would just find it boring and drop it in first episode. This is the sad truth of game adaptation, the pacing is extremely hard to fulfill both the need of the game players and non game players. They have to find the balance for both. Gonna repeat this again, anime =/= game. You can't have drawn out dialogues and very slow pacing for game adaptation. It serves as a way to advertise the game so people who're interested in the game may go play it themselves and have a different experience from the anime when they play the game. |

well if you feel rushed that will so 24 episode for 9 month (in game time) is horrifying (if they cover all story) eps 1 with 2 days (in game time) so 9 month will be 270 days for 24 episode? that too hectic kamoshida palace maybe took 3-4 episodes for conclusion |

As someone who has invested almost 150hours on the game and got the platinum on ps4,i have to say that the first episode was pretty good. Everything seen in the first episode is exactly as it happened in the source material, meaing the video game(except maybe the way they transfered into the palace). So it can be quite confusing to the new people, but this is exactly how the game starts. Also, because of the nature/gameplay of the video game,it is impossible for the anime to feel exactly as the game. We are talking about a game that you spend most of your time in dialogues and the choices you make with the rest of your group(confidants to be more precise). I am personally glad we even get an anime adaptation at all. |

As a huge Atlus fan who played and loved the game, and all of Atlus 3DS SMT and Devil Survivor games, I'm very biased about the anime ;) So I quite enjoyed the first episode and it's little changes. Nonetheless, there are two things that bugged me a bit: 1. It was too rushed. 24 episodes aren't enough to cover the full story AND to properly explain what the hell is going on. If you haven't played the game, you are freaking confused or might even hate the first episode. The story is really good though and the interactions between the characters are great, so please keep watching everybody! 2. Akira/Ren/Protagonist whatever he is called here is too silent. He might be the typical silent MC in the game and it works perfectly there, but in the anime, his silence makes him feel like an extra, not an MC. He should say more than 2-3 sentences in an episode... I can't even judge his VA like this xD But overall a good episode. Can't wait to see more. |

Not a fan of this. Don't like how the MC is portrayed as almost like a self-insert just to keep it as neutral as possible in order to not annoy any part of the fanbase. The pacing was on afterburners and it's not particularly animated well. It does have some cool directing and they used the same OST as the game which is pretty cool but I am not impressed so far |

lol, what was that? I haven't play P5 now, but damn, that was one shitty reason to awaken your power. Does the game also like that?... I can't explain it, but it seems weaker in term of Life or death situation unlike in the previous series. in the previous series it's clear that if mc dont awaken the power, they or their friends gonna lose their lives, here it just feel comical af (probably bcos of slapping scene :P) the part when joker talk to ren was awesome af tho.. especially with Jun Fukuyama voice <3 and Yu still stand strong for having the best name for the anime version out of entire series (bcos Minato arisato and akira kurusu still sound more badass than Makoto and Ren lol) |

Should I start from the beginning or can I jump right in with the latest show? Ahem, You can do either actually. If you can give enough time and patience, I recommend playing: Persona 3 Fes > Persona 4 or Persona 4 Golden > Persona 5. If you don't want to look back old generation consoles and just want to jump right on Persona bandwagon, you can play Persona 5 only. I don't recommend playing in reverse order. Persona 5 has this best gameplay they've been honed for many years so playing 3 and 4 later will make you see some faults in the games and lose the will to finish them imo. Even though they share same game elements, each Persona game has different theme and storyline which have little connections with each other. When you play all the games, you can dig the lore deeper which still have some unsolved questions even now. You can ignore Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4/Q Spin-offs which have different gameplays because they contribute little to none to the stories of each game unless ATLUS plans a big Persona game with Makoto's return in full glory. Persona 1 and 2? What is that? Some kinda ancient programs or something? ;p |

That's a cool start, Joker running smoothly in action. Wut a sad flashback, did he killed the guy or just injured him?, so as a result he's been treated as a criminal who looks like will cause trouble. The palette color looks like P3 cause I haven't watched yet P4, so I guess I felt the vibe P3 even with the soundtrack, they felt similar. "I am zero thou, thou art I", just felt a nostalgia of Jun on the past xD |

For someone who plays the game, I think it's a very good adaptation, not that impressive but we still have 23 episodes more so it's still too soon to judge. Pacing is bad but that's probably because they want to show Ren's awakening at 1st episode. Personally I prefer the one in the game better, cause we got to hear Arsene's evil laugh before he materialized MUAHAHAHAHAHA. And yeah, the reason I played the game with English dub instead of Japanese (I'm the type that always use Japanese dub) is Kamoshida's voice. The English dub fits that *cough* bastard *cough* personality better. 4/5. |

That’s probably just fanservice for the fangirls, just like the sequence with the two girls on the train watching an interview with Akechi Literally ruined the whole episode for me. I think the reasoning behind this appearance is foreshadowing the event where Akechi shoots the protagonist in the head. Even the frame where the bullet travels past the protagonist’s head looks like the bullet was shooting through his head if not for its distance from his head. |

Halpher said: I am disappointed. Even the introduction to Kamoshida's castle and the Persona part was lackluster... so far? In my opinion Lackluster I don’t think the anime is trying to aim to be as stylish as the game. If you couldn’t tell from the anime-only reactions, the first episode served its purpose in creating an interesting premise and drawing in the audience. Rather than having this ”Oomph!” feeling, the anime decides to draw upon the mystery aspect of the first portion of the game, slowly bringing in the viewer and topping it off with the Awakening. |

As the one who plays P5, i felt that it's a bit rushed, but not too far to ruin the show. Some transition between scenes is a bit odd, but maybe i'll get used to it soon. Beneath the mask on the first episode? Hell yeah! They showed Takemi at the first episode! Sojiro is much kinder compared to the game, not a bad thing. Also, Kawakami's secret job almost exposed at the first episode, really? It feels nice to hear the protag(Amamiya Ren) speak more words while he didn't speak to much in the game. i kinda hoping that the protag could get a (hopefully canon) romantic relationship considering how the game works, but looking back at persona animated series, i can do nothing but to wait and hope. The first awakening didn't give a really big impact (if compared to the game) but it's still epic! Maybe the game gave me too much expectation for the anime, but so far so good. 7/10 for now. |

I haven't played the game so I have no idea what was going on. I don't really get what happened first or what happened later or what was reality and what was some kind of a dream or whatever. Still, this looks like a fun series. |

The best part in this thread...when people ask the "which heroine route" question ^^ Persona 5 is not a VisualNovel, there are only 3 Endings , Bad, Normal (Good) and True End and like the P4 adaption, it will be very likely the true end ending. Besides.....pigtail blondie was never popular enough in japan or the nerdy girl, it was the "nadeshiko" typ and the only true waifu :D |

So, not having seen this, or ANYTHING related to Persona yet... can I watch this or do I need background knowledge? Not just talking about the game but prequel animes or something? |

Pretty awful pacing, especially as its the first episode that shouldnt need to rush but properly setup things, while later parts can be more rushed. Who wanted to see Kamoshida's castle in the first episode? That should have been the start of the 2nd episode, but no they just wanted to show Arsene and even tease Morgana. And all while even including the teacher maid teaser, because they know how the game was literally unplayable without her time-saving coffee At least the ending song makes up. |

Just to be clear since many are asking about this. No you dont have to watch previous persona anime to watch this. Same goes for the Persona 5 game. You dont have to play previous games, its standalone. As for the rushed episode people are complaining about like i said earlier, its understandable if we consider the fact that they have to cover the whole game in 24episodes. And if i am not mistaken, the purpose of anime like this is mostly to promote the game mostly. I just hope the adaptation is better than the latest Tales of Zestiria anime, which was a complete letdown. |

Almost every character looks like jerks I'd hate to be around. I liked the easter eggs with the Rise posters and mention of Naoto. |
