best series this year, even though the score is kind of exaggerated, but, it deserves a good score. IMO, BTW, Reo:0 is just ok compare to "your name". I don't know why people prasie re:0 so much, to me, it's just a little better than the angel beats on storytelling. And the most useful review of re:0 just proves my opinion

This might actually be the most cancerous thread in MAL.

The movie was average. It looked good at times, but the characters were insufferable, and the story wasn't really that original. The drama felt forced to me :/

Can anyone tell me why this movie is so good? I've written my review of it, but with people praising it so much, I'm not sure if I missed something about it.

I think there are some things you missed due to cultural unfamiliarity. While this film does speak to a lot of people on an emotional level, there are specific cultural elements which could be lost in translation.
i thought the plot was lackluster and inconsistent. no explanations, why did anything happen in this movie? why the amnesia?

Why the amnesia? To prevent a time paradox. Mitsuha and Taki exist in different timelines and you cannot have memories of a person who died before you met them. The universe tries to correct itself, and attempts to erase evidence of their past encounters when they return to their own timelines. They only physically meet during and after kataware doki, the point of supernatural occurences when their timelines converge.
why the body switch? did the body switch actually happen or were they just dreaming?

The body swap is a supernatural element and you have to accept it prima facie; there is no “explanation” for it nor does the film need one. And yes, it actually happened and was not a dream (I thought that was pretty clear).
wth was the deal with the grandma and mitsuha's family?

What about them? Mitsuha’s mother is dead and I think she used to be a shrine maiden or priestess, which is a tradition carried down through her bloodline.
do fathers actually think their daughters body switch or become a different person or are impersonators when they call him a bitch?

I don’t think he ever thought “she” was not his daughter; “who are you?” was a rhetorical question calling her out since her behavior was such a departure from what he expected of his own daughter.
what happened off screen to avert the disaster, exactly?

With some convincing, the townspeople managed to move to the school, outside the impact area. The comet still annihilated most of the village.
why and how did they meet cutting across different timelines on top of that..place?

In Japanese superstition, the time between dawn and twilight is considered a period when strange or supernatural events occur; this is referenced through the discussion of kataware doki.
how did they suddenly regain the ability to body swap? did that sake have some magic power? no explanations at all, but sake is magic?

Kuchikame sake has some special significance in Japanese culture; since it is fermented with the saliva of virgin shrine maidens you could say it has their spiritual essence and contains their personhood. The final body swap was caused by the sake linking the two destined people’s essences together.
on that matter, why would anyone help with a ridiculous plan like that in the first place, unless as a prank, and mitsuha's friends didn't seem to treat it as a prank anyway?

Because they’re her close friends, who trust her and might still give her the benefit of the doubt in spite of what she’s saying sounding bat-shit crazy.
what was the point of having amnesia and then that deja vu effect in the first place?

Again, to prevent a time paradox. The two communicate through supernatural means, but by the laws of the universe they should never have met. There are several timelines (I can reconstruct a detailed plot diagram when I see the film again, its been 3+ months since I saw it at AX), but in Mitsuha’s primary timeline, she has not yet met Taki; in Taki’s primary timeline, Mitsuha is dead. Only after their timelines merge can they form new memories of each other that will be retained, but none of their past encounters exist in the history of that timeline.
And even if I were to think the director's intent was to give a more emotive experience, the characters were still bland, with no particular personality or aspirations to speak of and the romance was shoe horned in.

I disagree. While the characters weren’t larger than life or memorable in the way someone like Senjougahara Hitagi spits savage zingers every other sentence, they were realistic. Mitsuha aspires to live a more cultured and interesting life in the city, and wants to get out of the boondocks where she’s stuck as a shrine maiden. She’s a little mischievous and likes going all-in, evidenced by her initiative in meddling with Taki’s personal life and squandering his money on “living it up” in Tokyo.

Taki is artistically inclined and has visions of becoming an architect of some sort, and he’s a bit shy and indecisive when it comes to interacting with his female peers. But he’s a kind person and puts the bullies in Mitsuha’s school in their place when he takes over her body. He is more bold and reckless than Mitsuha, evidenced by his lack of fucks given over some of his actions while in school using her body.
not trying to be an ass or anything, i genuinely don't understand why this movie is so highly rated. explanations please?

Not every film can touch every person, so I’ll give some common reasons:
- It’s funny. The comedy in the first half with the body swap hijinks is pretty well executed, with subtle things like the mismatched verbal and body language being expressed in a believable way.
- The characters are relatable. They aren’t larger than life, but their lives are more relatable on a personal level to the average viewer than say, that of Yang Wen-Li.
- The plot is engaging. After being invested in the characters, we want to see what will happen to them, especially after the second half, which is tense and emotional.
- The twist is unexpected. Mitsuha being dead because after town was annihilated by meteor strike? I doubt people saw that coming.
- The ending, while bittersweet, is fulfilling enough for viewers. In a way it’s an anti 5-cm/sec.
If you didn’t like the movie, then that’s just that. No film can be perfect and have 100% of viewers love it.
I don't disagree that this is a great movie, but I don't think you fully addressed some of these issues, or that they can be addressed. Firstly I feel compelled to point out that they aren't in different (parallel) timelines, they're at different points in the same timeline. Since Mitsuha never died in the altered timeline, there was no reason for him to ever investigate the crater, find her kuchikame sake and help her fix the original timeline. Any issues arising from time paradoxes are left essentially unanswered, or at best waved away with the word "supernatural". (Them being in different parallel timelines doesn't make sense, since it's Mitsuha's existence that caused Taki to try and save her in the first place. If they were in distinct timelines, Taki would be in a timeline with a Mitsuha that didn't know who he was, and wouldn't bring him the braided cord that (maybe) ties their fates together.)

I think the issue presented, though, was the memory problem: Mitsuha and Taki both remember their experiences with incredible clarity except when it would be inconvenient. For example, Mitsuha can remember that she had a date with Okudera including the time, place etc. but not the particular date; Mitsuha could only remembered that it was today or tomorrow or whatever it is. This hole in the memory is a necessary device for the films twist, but the presentation of it is inconsistent. It would make more sense if they could never remember what happened when they were body swapped, but were piecing together what happened from the notes they left each other. In my view, this would actually provide a much better framework for Taki's later investigations. (The downside being you then have to explain how they remember the others friends/school/work etc. Maybe you can remember the dream when you're in the dream or something…)

I watched the version with watermarks all over, but it was really good. And I mean, it's totally worth 10/10 !

The story in the beginning is just about ordinary, but it gets really deep later. The body-switching idea is interesting, though not exploited very much.

The Quantum mechanics are implemented really good in this anime, though the genre is not Sci-Fi.

Anime exploits the idea of a Multiverse and Collective consciousness - Quantum mind.
It appears that to prevent the disaster with the comet, the minds of Taki and Mitsuha were quantum-entangled to enable the body switching. It's known that quantum entanglement doesn't have time limits, it works on a 5th dimension, so the difference of 3 years was not a problem.

Why they were entangled? Maybe because Mitsuha somehow transcended the 4th dimension on her death in one of the universes where comet disaster killed her. Then their mind were entangled and time travel occured, so that they could prevent the disaster in other universes.

Using the quantum physics here really makes it much more interesting.

And to all the people complaining about the details such as why they didn't knew that they were 3 years apart when body-switching, then think about their memories.

That quantum entanglement-based body switching was like a dream to them, and they had very little memories of it after awakening, only feelings left. And when switched, they haven't really remembered their real self's memories.

So the only way of communicating was through leaving notes. And why the notes disappeared after a while? Well, this is because different universes were involved, and in the "last" universe of the movie, the notes in the phone simply weren't written.

Will definetely rewatch this on 1080p, though the experience is really good even with what we have now.

Gotta say, i was actually pretty pessimistic about this movie, not because i don't like this author. Just because i hate most of the overhyped series out there. BUT, this actually suprised me totally. Was really worth of my time

I don't think the school at the end of Garden of Words is the same as the one in the beginning of this film.

For those who haven't seen the Garden of Words and prefer not to have that film spoiled any further in this thread, I've spoiler-tagged the rest of my response. May I respectfully ask that other posters do the same?

It's a little overrated but I still gave it a 9 so ehh...

Without a supernatural element, Kimi no Na wa is hard to explain. There are two universes; the original one where Mitsuha dies and the changed/merged one where Mitsuha lives. In both universes, the body swapping still occurs.

In the original universe where Taki goes to the shrine god's cave three years after Mitsuha dies, he drinks the sake that contains half of her soul. It gives him some of her memories temporarily and sends him back in time three years ago where her soul was from. He manages to convince her friends to help him save the town, to save Mitsuha. Then he heads to the shrine god's cave once again, thinking that Mitsuha is in his body three years from then.

Mitsuha is in fact in his body, and she realizes that Itomori has been destroyed. She, the previous day, met Taki in Tokyo but since he hasn't body swapped with her three years ago, he didn't recognize her. She gave him the braided cord that he wears as a good luck charm. Mitsuha and Taki meet each other at kataware-toki at the crater of the shrine god's cave. They are in their own bodies again. At this moment, the timelines of the two are in sync. Taki suggest Mitsuha ask her father for help in saving the town (and herself). At this moment, the universe changes. The timeline of three years ago is altered as Mitsuha manages to successfully convince her father to organize an emergency drill, and this changed timeline is now the past of Taki's timeline. Fast forward five/eight years depending on whose perspective, and the two finally meet again and are implied to end up together.

In conclusion, don't think too much. Time travel is always complicated. I could always say Taki died because he hit his head on the rock that day in the shrine...Personally, I believe that the Taki of the old universe is the same as the one in the new universe. His memories were just blurred because of that concussion and because the universe can't accept contradictions in timelines, that's why those diary entries were deleted and so on. Yea, don't think too much, you'll confuse yourself (like me).

I understand what you mean but this is a one-shot movie with no prequel serial/movie/manga, putting a well explanation and introduction into a 2-hour one shot movie is not an easy task, and imo this movie has a pretty nice explanation about what happend altough ofc there is some part that is inevitably vague

Deiger said:

im taken it as it happened, but as soon as they finish what they need to do, the nature try to fix the paradox by removing their memory about it

Deiger said:

wth was the deal with the grandma and mitsuha's family?

as it shown in movie, they are the shrine maiden family, in japanese cultural they are regarded as the messenger of human and God, so lets taken that it was the God's way to send a message to them (

Deiger said:

hey she is in the right age for being rebel :D

Deiger said:

do it need any other expalanation? mitsuha dad and everybody else see the comet is actually really splitting and it should give them enough time to continue the emergency broadcast

Deiger said:

kataware doki?

Deiger said:

how did they suddenly regain the ability to body swap? did that sake have some magic power? no explanations at all

on the mitsuha part, as I said before, she is a shrine maiden that could be regarded as God messenger, and she does wish to become a tokyo boy lol. on Taki part, I agree they should give more explanation on why it should be Taki?

Deiger said:

but sake is magic?

as it shown in movie, that sake is Mitsuha's half soul (it processed inside her mouth, yikes, anyway is that kind of sake really exist in japan? D:)

Deiger said:

well, they already body switched numerous time and being weird person occasionally in school, its not hard to connect it, isnt it? but, yeah, imo its kinda ridiculous too lol

Deiger said:

what was the point of having amnesia and then that deja vu effect in the first place?

its just the nature way to fix the paradox, deja vu is the direct effect of amnesia, since even you get the amnesia, the brain apparently still have a fragment of memory of that

overall, this is a supernatural genre, you shouldnt took it with too much real world logic

maybe this movie just not fit your taste, but it's well made imo, its not a typical romance, slice of life genre

I think it always had to be Taki. It's sort of a time paradox. It was Taki who Mitsuha gave the braided cord to three years ago before he knew her. It's a time paradox which must be fufilled no matter what. In my opinion the braided cord is the catalyst that lets them swap bodies. Musubi are decorated knots made to support obi sashes, but in the movie it's also time, and the bonds whcih transcend it. Taki is the one who received musubi from Mitsuha and therefore he is the one who switches with her.

Great anime in terms of art and the emotions they give to the viewer. It was a total enjoyment for me. However I think I found a very big mistake in the plot:

How come do Mitsuha and Taki not realize that they are in 3 years of time difference when they swap bodies?

In the beginning I understand that they were thinking it was just a dream and later they realize that they really change into each other's bodies several times a week and it is also noticeable from the reactions of people around them as they were telling like "you were very weird yesterday" etc. And Taki keeps a mobile diary, she should have noticed that the date is 3 years further for her even just by using the smartphone. On the other hand, even though Mitsuha lives in the countryside, Taki should have realized the date from newspapers, school, computers, phone etc.

I think that is a big mistake they did not realize for the plot. Am I wrong?

To expect a movie to not have plot holes is a bit of a unrealistic expectation..while there is a hell of a lot of mystery surrounding the main influences of the plot, the value of the movie comes far more from the emotional and artistic creativity of how things are presented than the mechanical approach of logical input makes logical output.
That all being said, this is probably among the best anime movies I've ever watched from that perspective...would be cooler to have had more time to make a more realistic approach to them finally meeting years later (random encounters in a mega-city of over 13 million people is just way too cliche for movies...)
I'd give it a solid 9/10

Hi, these are some of my personal views and thoughts of what I came to understand from the movie. I hope it answers some of your questions. WARNING contain spoilers

1. Mitsuha and Taki could not remember clearly about their body swaps and they only realized that the body swap did actually happen from the reactions from the people around them due to the cause and effect of their individual actions. In the movie, Mitsuha did mentioned she could not remember clearly what she did on the day of the first swap shown in the movie(the bed hair part) and it was like a dream. From this, the nature of the body swap is like a dream, and like how we dream, the aftermath is that we could not clearly remember things like date and time properly. However, we could sometimes remember the actions we did in our dream. Furthermore, they are only concern about protecting their lifestyles and would overlook the things they want to remember during the body swap. Therefore, if Taki or Mitsuha did find out the 3 years gap during the body swap period, there is a high chance of them forgetting about it the next day.

2. Why do both Mitsuha and Taki forget each other? By starting with the fact that Taki went to the mountains in search of the god, his purpose was to save Mitsuha. However, Mitsuha later survives and causes a change in the timeline, which result in a paradox. The paradox is that the purpose of Taki trying to save Mitsuha from the beginning is a contradiction as there should not be a book of the names of the victims that has Mitsuha's name inside. Due to the laws of nature, Taki will forget why he went to the mountains. However, his feelings and the consequences of his actions still remains and thus causing the Deja Vu feeling that they constantly having later on.

From Mitsuha's view and following the logic as mentioned, the body swap happens in the timeline where she will die from the comet. In the timeline where she survives, the body swap, by right, should not have taken place. Starting from the twilight, also known as "kataware-doki", both Taki and Mitsuha returns to normal in a natural way and not triggered by sleep. From there on, the timeline where the body swap takes place transitions to the other timeline where everybody survives and thus she would forget Taki. Later on, she would also forget how she knew that the comet is going hit as the news stated that Itomori was holding practice drills and did not pinpoint any issues to Mitsuha. The teacher did state that the "kataware-doki" is " when the world blurs and one might encounter something not human", so don't think so much about what the Twilight does.

3. Why did both Taki and Mitsuha suddenly tear after the Grandma state that Taki was dreaming? It can be safely assumed that the "musubi" aka "connection" between Taki and Mitsuha has been severed as the body swapping did not take place after that. This was triggered by the Grandma due to her experiencing the same body swap dreams. Furthermore, none of the friends realized about the body swap, the body swap can be considered part of the law of nature. Therefore, with someone else realizing of the out of logic body swap, the body swap would then be stopped. Furthermore, the dairy entries from Mitsuha also get erased by the law of nature.

On the other hand, the "musubi" was reconnected by Mitsuha as she went to find Taki and gave him her braided cord, which symbolizes "musubi" itself and later triggers Taki to drink the wine and restart the body swap.

4. How did Taki swap body with Mitsuha from drinking the wine? The wine was stated to be Mitsuha's other self. When Taki drank the wine, he came to understand Mitsuha's life like a miracle, and via this miracle, he was also able to body swap. Don't think so much about it.

5. Lastly, will they remember about the body swap again? My answer is yes BUT they will forget about it again. There are many pieces of evidence of the body swap which still lingers in the timeline where Mitsuha survives.
For example:
- Mitsuha lived through the moment where she somehow tried to save the people in her city from the comet.
- Taki could perfectly sketch his "Mitsuha's hometown" drawing before he visited the actual place with Miki and the other guy.
Putting myself in their shoes, I would trace back from the fact that Mitsuha came running down the mountains, thus something must happen from the mountains. So what happen at the mountain? The answer is "kataware-doki". As stated, the Twilight is when the timeline where Mitsuha dies transitions to the timeline where she survives. Both Taki and Mitsuha can relive the moment of the Twilight and remember the moment they first met each other there as well as remembering every other thing. However, they would gradually forget it again after the Twilight. Hope someone can do an after story of them experiencing the Twilight again.........

Thanks for reading.

I can't believe people are rating this so much lower just because they're not getting any "explanations" as to whats happening in the movie

Trying to be realistic was not in the scope of the movie (I mean the main dude reversed time by drinking sake ffs). Rating the movie down so much because it wasn't realistic is like listening to a symphony and saying the orchestra was bad because they didn't sound rock'n'roll enough or whatever.

Sometimes movies just have magical moments that happen and that's okay. I mean the movie even says they were DESTINED to be together. That means no matter what crazy stuff happens inbetween they were always gonna be together.

I mean geez y'all would probably say It's a Wonderful Life is a bad movie just because it doesn't take the time to have explanations for the supernatural things that happen in it.

And look I understand a movie not being for you but I knowing that I don't really care for Mech/Space anime wouldn't watch that kind of anime then complain about all the Mechs and stuff and rate it a 1/10 because of it. Thats just so dumb.

Sorry stupid stuff like this makes me so mad.

I hate this almost as much as I hate how an anime will introduce a really hateable character on purpose but because people hate this character so much they start rating the anime down. It's just so dumb.

All that said, loved the movie. Definitely left an impression on me after the credits rolled. I'm glad this turned out how it did but I would have loved to see a little bit more of what happens after the ending. Good stuff.

I have just watched this movie. Story and Picture A+++++++
And I have ever watched almost Shinkai Makoto's works.

Watching this;(Maybe i'm misunderstand) there is something that make me feel nostalgic, I think this is quite like Hoshi no Koe + The Place Promised in Our Early Days + Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo + 5 Centimeters Per Second. I mean it's like put something (of those movies) together but there's still have adding new story and make it exciting.

Now,I quite like the garden of words and 5cm more than Your name. Yeah, I prefer Romance Drama to Romance Fantasy. But I still want to watch Your Name again for more understanding of this story, maybe when i watch it again I will love it more.

I love Shinkai Makoto's works very very much. All of them are masterpiece, I love all.

Watched Kimi no Na wa yesterday. What a movie! First, I want to praise the soundtrack. I absolutely love it and it's absolutely one of the reasons I watched the movie (alongside the rating and the creator of course). I also liked the perfect combination of drama, comedy and romance and the amount of details throughout the movie. A little more explanations here and there would be welcome, but that does not bother me to much since explaining everything would take to much time.

Although I'm not a big fan of the supernatural aspect, a real masterpiece which I truly enjoyed!

Kimi no wa is definetly great in order to have the sucess it is having now. But it is not the best movie of Makoto Shinkai! Makoto catches the attention of fans by telling stories in a very realistic and honest way, which it is not the case of Kimi no Wa. We have a post about his other works and explaning why Kimi no Wa is not our favorite: https://luxasshop.wordpress.com/2016/11/14/movies-by-makoto-shinkai/

Mitsuha X Taki couple of the fcking year mates.
Just finished watching this and I must say every second was worth it, while the time traveling and paradox made the story a bit complex and needed more explanation, I still find it a good and fun watch, you can just make your own theories on why the amnesias and paradox stuff happens, I was about to lose it when I thought it was gonna end with them not looking at each other when it was snowing, glad Taki had the balls to talk to her.

Theres a lot more I want to say but it would take too much time, anyways
10/10. Definitely gonna buy the BD's.

Honestly, if anything that made me give this movie a 7 or 8, it would just be the resolution. I would say, one of the major plot points of the movie would be Mitsuha's relation with her father. I just felt like they wrapped up the movie by saying her father decides to listen to her for once, out of the blue, got every one to evacuate when it appeared that there wasn't enough time and leave it at that. Nothing to expand on that resolution which didn't have to take more than a few minutes.

I can't be the only one that thought it was just OK. I liked Garden of Words more.

It didn't give me enough time to care about any of the characters, and because of that I did not believe the love story. 5cm/s got the characterization right, even if it just broke me at the end. Part of that was mostly because they really only had to focus on the male lead. That might be the issue here, that it had to handle both lead characters at the same time. Didn't really get into the head of either of them.

The rest was awesome. The plot points connected right. The mysticism (comet, threads of time) was executed perfect. Sound and visuals top-notch as expected.

Went to see it with VERY high expectations and left the theatre fangirling (inside) sooooo hard. Didn't think it would be tons better than I expected!!

I'm so satisfied.

Of course I couldn't focus maybe first 10 minutes of the movie, because it was a special screening for the movie and they announced Shinkai was supposed to come, but he couldn't. I think I'm a bit glad he didn't come since wouldn't have been able to see the movie through my tears. On the other hand I could've seen my favorite director. 5 hours later I'm still fangirling over that, even if he didn't come.

On to the movie itself.

Quite early in the movie I was thinking how it would be "fun" if Mitsuha and Taki were from different times, just because I knew the movie would need some drama and started thinking what the drama should involve. So I was really amused when they revealed their times were three yeart apart. Didn't make less enjoyable as I really like twists like that (and body swapping stories tend to have time differences?). It also had just enough humor in it, mostly everyone in the audience was hooked. And how the 「すきだ」 written on her hand almost broke me.

The animation was, of course, stunning! The soundtrack is also amazing, I've listened to it before a little bit and already then I was deeply moved by it. The song "Date" played quite a few times during the movie and my ears were very pleased.

The voice actors did a fantastic job! Loved all these small cameos by rather well known actors. Especially Hanazawa Kana, whom I didn't expect to appear as Yukino in this movie. In 2013 she's a teacher in Itomori (Kotonoha no Niwa takes place in 2013-2014) so we still don't know how Yukino's and Takao's "relationship" is doing in 2016. I guess we don't really need to know that since Kotonoha no Niwa and Kimi no Na wa are two different movies in the end. But I still liked Yukino's addition.

I absolutely LOVED Kamiki Ryuunosuke's Taki!! I already love him as an actor and I'm so glad to see him get more voice acting roles. His voice acting has become so much better since I last heard him and I didn't recognize him, but I couldn't help but compare him to Matsuoka Yoshitsugu (whom I knew wasn't behind Taki's voice) throughout the whole movie. I don't really know how to describe, but I guess their styles are very similar. Just become a full time voice actor so I could enjoy hearing your voice more (since I haven't been keeping up with dramas and such for years now...).

It was such a fun movie and became dramatic only 2/3? in. Which is surprising as Shinkai's movies tend to be quite somber and dramatic from start to finish. Looking at the comments, I don't see how it was confusing. I think they explained pretty much everything at some parts of the movie, or left some clues that the audience could piece together if they just thought over it a bit more.

The ending couldn't have been more perfect than it was! Finally a Shinkai movie where the main characters meet at the end and leave the audience hopeful (not like 5CMpS, but oh how I love that ending too). When the ending credits started rolling, I looked at my friend and told "That wasn't a Shinkai ending!" And how happy and satisfied this movie left me.

I'm sososo happy I had the chance to see it on the big screen! I've been impatiently waiting for the BD release date since august and when I found out they showed it in my country I couldn't really believe it. Now I can't wait for it actually be released on BD so I could see it again many times.

Was genuinely surprised that this lived up to all the hype around it. Understandable why this has made 170 million dollars at the Japanese box office and may possibly be in line with an oscar. Will likely see it in UK theatres to really enjoy the visuals as I saw some shitty 480p copy.

That soundtrack though :*

Personally, I'll rate it on par with "5 Centimeters", below "Wolf Children".

I feel that "5 Centimeters" was the masterpiece. "Garden of Words" was a technical attempt to meld the usual Makoto Shinkai style with a sellable plot, the result of which is "Your Name".

Visually it wasn't as good (or on par), but still outstanding. The animation is fluid especially during motion scenes that appears to be tracing over real actors, though artwork and animation are only parts of a movie. It's plot is extremely concise and tight, while retaining its appeal to the mass audience. I suppose that's why the movie is so highly acclaimed.

It's very difficult to write a body/time switch story without the plot falling apart. Yet somehow "Your Name" manages to keep everything together right to the end with excellent story direction and cinematography. If you really watch and understand the movie, the plot holes are minimal. Using the concept of being dreamlike also allowed for the perfect ending closure which was masterfully achieved.

(By allowing the characters to forget through the plot and letting time catch up. Then having them meet again in real life/time, giving them the opportunity to continue however they want on their own terms)

(*cough* While we audience see the full effects of the switch, it's supposed to be, and emphasized many times by various characters and the narrative, dreamlike for them. When was the last time you remember your actions, dates, names and faces even in your most vivid of dreams)

But what I really want to point out (that nobody has mentioned yet) is the soundwork and sound engineering. Typical hollywood/anime movies, or other movies for that matter are simply loud, or soft, at least for me. Here, I could hear the rustle of trees in the wind, in my head. The chime of bells and crackle of fire during the ritual, the bustling metropolis sound of Tokyo, the ear piercing screech and chest thumping blast of the impact. I was really really surprised at how well they made use of directional background sound that lends realism to many scenes. It felt too real, even the scenes with the phone vibrating. Audio balance is top notch, at least at my local cinema.

Then there's the soundtrack. Simply stating it's appropriate is an understatement. It's upbeat, fun, a little naughty and never feels out of place. The final sequence when the music starts playing and the public alert system starts wailing (again in my head) ups the urgency and intensity to a level I've never experienced before in a movie.

In all, "Your Name" is a movie with a perfect blend of its elements, and truly greater than the sum of its parts.
