What genres and themes have been typically unexplored by most anime?

This is just an interesting little topic that I think has more to it than one might think. Although a lot of series nowadays seem to stick to specific, conventional themes and ideas, there are some that are out-of-the box, and do things you'd typically expect from Hollywood films.

What I'd like to know is what genres and themes you all think more anime should try to explore, and how they could go about doing this. Creativity is encouraged, but no ideas are necessarily bad.

Shojo + horror
The art style surprisingly is fitting, and it'd be a nice variable to throw in with the typical shojo drama.

Near as I know, proper Westerns remain largely untouched by anime. There are a few exceptions if you extend the search to manga and are a bit loose about the more typical thematic conventions and iconography (such as Peace Maker and Green Blood). A few anime series, like Trigun, also appropriate bits and pieces from the genre.

I've had my fingers crossed for a Peace Maker adaptation for ages now, so this gap always stood out to me. Westerns seem to be coming back in Hollywood, so maybe we'll see a few anime tackle the genre soon.

I think it would be nice to see a traditional western anime. There've been anime that combine other genres with westerns. The idea has great potential for drama, action, romance, etc.

When the cast is only females, I feel like a yuri scenario is just too easy to pull off. Why not have a couple males and see them react to the yuri, y'know?

Yuri + Yaoi...Yes, BOTH in one single anime...

Let's make both pervs and fujos interested and disgusted at the same time...

There are over 200 shoujo horror manga, the problem is that not enough of them get adapted (there's only like 5 shoujo horror anime). There are honestly a lot of genre combinations that don't get adapted frequently enough. There are about 100 psychological slice of life manga but only one anime.

If there was a sudden surge in say, popularity for shojo horror, I bet we'd be seeing a lot of them getting adaptations.

That's what I like about 91 Days. The characters and places are given American-sounding names, and it helps in the idea that it does take place during the Prohibition.

Hey, if you can't please one specific crowd, then why not try to please two similar crowds? That way if one element doesn't hit home with audiences, they at least have the people who like the other, and will continue to watch and share the series.

I've personally enjoyed alternate history/military anime. Doesn't seem to be a whole lot of variety here (especially when it comes to modern history (i.e WW2) and done in depth). An example would be something like Zipang.

Harem genre
yes im not crazy , that genre could be great but anime make it ultra trash
they always recycle the same ideas
"beta dumb mc "the first girl win" "the abusive tsundere win"
just imagine if the mc have a great personality like keima
just imagine if all of the girls was well written and have equivalent chance to win

I personally think that more-established franchises should be willing to take more risks. The anime series Pokémon Origins is a great example. Adapting events from the first generation, while not necessarily tied down with connections to the main anime, or even the canonicity of Gen 1 itself. I would love an anime adaptation of the Pokémon Adventures manga, aimed at a teenage demographic.

Because hey, the Pokémon fandom isn't just full of kids. Origins was a love letter to longtime fans, why not try to appeal to this large demographic?

Would it even make a difference? No matter the chances only one girl will win either way...Unless thay make it a literal harem and the MC gets all the girls, but to make all girls be ok with it would be too much of a "wish fulfillment" idea...

I think the harem genre is tricky to nail down, especially when it comes to changing the formula successfully.

There's a serious lack of crime dramas, and even then the majority of them seem to be police-centric.

That's a good point. Maybe a crime genre focused around the perspectives and actions of a couple of suspects, and how they act as the investigation progresses and more details are uncovered?

Yes, anything revolving around criminals, crime organizations, gangs/mobs, even lone detectives (like Chinatown) would be great. That's why I enjoyed 91 Days from the last season so much.

Westerns and war. I think it'd be interesting to see anime in those genres.

I'd also love to see a claustrophobic horror anime. Something like The Thing.

Parodies I guess, or comedy overall... It's not like there isn't much of comedy, it's just that it isn't hilarious. Things that make you chuckle or sneer aren't worth while...

Actual legit horror that actually scares you, not just gore and blood and shit like that. More anime like Perfect Blue would be great. There is plenty of great horror manga that could be adapted but I can see how it could be risky.

I guess when you think of horror, it's typically blood, things like jumpscares, etc. Maybe someday that'll change, although I doubt it.

I really think anime should go into satire much more than it already does. Satoshi Kon's Paranoia Agent was the only anime series I've seen with hints of satire (please don't say Inferno Cop is satirical. It's not). What I'd really like is a full-blown satire, a series that makes fun of everything while suggesting what needs to be changed in this medium and it needs to have a reasonably solid plot at the same time.

That's not too much to ask for, right?

Shounen + Death/Grief themes

Most shounen I've seen really don't handle death & it's effects very well-- I'd actually say they're terrible at it. Well, tv shows anyway.

I don't know if it's been said already (I also don't really want to say it) but themes such as addiction and drugs seem to be completely excluded from the anime-verse. Even though it's a big problem nowadays, although probably not in Japan, which is why there's no material I guess.

Every Idol anime, struggling to learn to do their dances is a common scenario for any idol series.

Princess Tutu is has ballet too, but I'm not sure how in-depth it goes as I've never watched it.
