Whenever I hear people talk about why they like anime, I always hear stuff like "It's so much better than my real life." So, why is anime better than our real life? Is the real world truly that boring? Do we under appreciate real life? Do we not really see the beauty in the real world? Without the real world anime wouldn't exist so doesn't that mean real life is actually exciting since it created anime or is it because life moves so slowly that we say things like that? Discuss. |

(some) anime worlds are obv idealized version of real life like who wouldn want to be with their nakama/ taisetsu na tomodachi catching pokemon and battlan gym leaders but alas we cant be porkemon trainers irl so we need to make do with what we have |

Because people are stuck in a cycle of all-the-same; no day feels special and we feel like we're stuck in motion. It becomes a drag and everything related to real life is a reminder of our suffering and identity crises. So people seek a way out: suicide anime. Or any other medium. Also people just like drawn shit because it's art and enjoy anime. As for anime grills, they don't really have physical imperfections so to a lot of people that aesthetic is over-all more appealing. As for a personal answer, the first paragraph is mostly one of the reasons I delve into literature, but also I never really found anything in the world "beautiful". I can appreciate art, though, but mountain chains and oceans, flora and fauna? Nah. "Under appreciate real life" my dude i don't even want to be alive, rl is overrated. |

Most people apply that quote to any form of entertainment, be it books, movies or video-games. It's only natural that entertainment take the more interesting and impactful parts of life/imagination rather than the duller parts that we experience every day. Also, anime and real-life aren't completely disparate; the anime that we experience becomes part of our lives. If people enjoy anime, that means that they are enjoying that section of their life. Also, what "beauty in the real world" are you referring to, lol? You need to wake up from your animus and face the real shit. |

For me it's about the SOL shows that depict ideal personalities of the characters. Like, wouldn't you want to effortlessly make friends with lots of girls and for them all to have colourful personalities and be cute & cheerful with you. In reality human relations are a lot harder than anime makes them seem. At least it was when I was in high school (and still now at Uni I sometimes wish people could act like anime characters). |

If you look at something like "I Don't Have Many Friends" it's something that would seem like a great world to someone who wants more friends (especially of the female variety). Serial Experiments Lain isn't intended for escapism and has a different target audience. Not everyone watches anime for the same reason. Someone who watches a lot of ecchi may claim that anime breasts are larger than real ones on average while someone who watches a lot of shoujo may claim the opposite. Josei and some mature seinen anime depict real life quite well and will interest people who like seeing how a different group of people will live their life, not because those lives are objectively more interesting but because they're different from their own. |

Guess I wasn't watching the same type of anime as they did then. Most of the anime I like is either more terrifying or dangerous than real life, not too far off from real life or is wondering whether a lifestyle different from ours is better or not. |

Because everything in fiction is better and more exciting. Real life is boring. The average person will have an average life and never have any type of adventure or excitement of any relevance. Also, 3D is ugly and imperfect.....2D on the other hand is perfect. |

Man you guys all make anime sound like some kind of virtual reality escape from the real word. I mean sure the real world is full of hate, stress, problems, and all sorts of negative emotions.... and sure we all want to live in this perfect world (heaven) and yea we all want things to go our way.... so you guys are basically saying that anime is only better than real life because every thing is always perfect and goes your way. I guess that make sense. Everyone wants to be happy. I still believe real life has some perks that anime doesn't have though. Like marijuana for instance. You never get that in anime xD |

I feel like the reason Anime is so much better is because it is an idolized world. An anime that can lift you out of the frustration and stress of every day life and put you in a world where there is excitement and adventure, good stressors is one to be cherished. Being able to watch anime, cartoons, etc. puts some of us in a state of mind that takes us back to a time where things were simpler and where the stress wasn't present. We forget there is a lot of things weighing on our mind and are overcome with a feeling of joy, and to some extent nostalgia. Being able to escape a reality that you are overwhelmed by, even just for a moment, means the world to some people. |

Of all the topics to stumble across this afternoon, I actually got an interesting one. Well, here goes! Note: I'm often going to substitute fiction in general for anime, but everything I say about the one applies to the other. TL;DR: Read the flippin' post To the people who say that the real world is better than anime: You're probably aware of this, but different people like different things. There's nothing wrong with the fact that I dislike sports, don't care for parties, find current events in the world depressing, and generally feel more at ease when I'm on my own. Some people just aren't energetic extroverts. Finding anime/fiction more entertaining than social functions isn't a bad thing. Like I said, you're probably already aware of that, but I just wanted to make sure that was clear before I moved on to the next topic... To the people who say that anime is better than the real world: If you had said the same thing a year ago, I would have agreed with you. It occurred to me around that time that one reason I liked fiction (including anime) so much was because nothing truly interesting happened in the real world, apart from depressing stuff I wanted no part in. Then, somewhat recently, it occurred to me that there IS something incredibly interesting about the real world: fiction. Fiction isn't some mystical thing that exists outside of reality: It's dreamed up, brought to life, and experienced in the real world. New fiction is always being created, people are constantly discovering new sources of it, and fans are perpetually discussing it. In short, you're looking at it the wrong way. Anime is not better than the real world. Anime is simply the part of the real world that you love the most. You see the creativity, humor, intrigue, romance, beauty, mystery, etc. in anime and relish it. The great thing is, you're not the only one. There's an entire subsystem of the world revolving around fiction/anime. You have people who spend most of their free time dreaming up dazzling ideas and bringing them to life in books, anime, video games, manga, and so forth. You have people who dive into the stories created through these media, then discuss these amazing stories and worlds with other, equally enthusiastic people. You even have people in the latter camp who become so passionate about fiction that they start making their own. Politics, school, work, and so forth may be boring/depressing/frustrating, but fiction makes this world so bloody fantastic! Personally, my two favorite activities are consuming fiction and creating fiction. I live and breath fiction. It is to me what drawing/history/sports/whatever is to other passionate individuals, and I love discussing it with those who have similar tastes. There's nothing quite like finding someone who loves the same things you do, regardless of whether it's anime, sports, history, cooking, or cars. As I said, I only came to this realization recently. I'm still clawing my way out of my cave and starting to see how much fun it is to discuss anime, video games, books, etc. with other people. I'll admit, it's not easy, but now that I'm making the first steps, I'm determined not to go back, no matter how nervous I get. I encourage anyone else who feels that fiction is better than reality to consider the same thing: Fiction is a part of reality, and it's an incredible part. Seek out others who relish the wonders of anime. Revel together in the stories, the characters, the art, the feels, the magic. It may not be easy, but once you make the transition, it's an absolutely thrilling experience. |

Important Note: I no longer - in any way, shape, or form - consider myself a moral nihilist (even in my old, convoluted definition of the term). I very much do believe there is such a thing as objective good and evil. In addition, I apologize for any of the posts I've made that are rude, aggressive, or otherwise unbecoming. I've always striven to walk a path befitting a follower of Christ, and now recognize some of my old comments here as misguided if not outright wrong. If you happen upon them, pray do not let them darken your view of the God I serve. He is kind, even if I, at times, have not been. |

Imagine if none of your favorite anime or video games ever ended !!!!! That would be simply amazing and you'd always be happy and never bored !!!! LMAO well yea its true, fiction can only last as long as the creators want it to and thats really the main downside other than it not being real lol well anime already NEVER bores me, but yea, theres definitely some i'd keep watching if they never ended |

a person living in an anime, unaware of any other world, would probably say whatever form of fiction that exists in their world is better than the life they live in. people always want more, and generally think doing a certain thing will improve their life. it's just a form of idealism honestly |

_Ako_ said: Because what's ever inside your brain is perfect, whereas if you put that into action in real life, it might get shitty... Anime provides something that real life doesn't. And, a lot of it. the reason what ever inside your brain is perfect is because you are free to think whatever you like inside your head. you feel "safe" there. Because You are in a sense the God of your own thought, only you control them and choose what to and not to believe. You have total control and aren't effected by outer forces. But then when you apply the rules of the real word to your thoughts you find negative emotions because the rules of the real world aren't made to satisfy you and make you happy like anime and video games and books and stuff ( whose purpose is to make you happy so they can make money off you henceforth is the reason why everything is perfect in these things because they want you to like it!) whereas in the real world the world itself does not cater to you but on the quite the contrary is a place where all 7 billion+ of us with all our differences have no choice but to negotiate and make sacrifices and meet the rest of civilization half way in an i scratch your back you scratch mines type of society where you can't be the God and have everything your way which fuels anger hatred and jealousy. Where even if you work to get everything you want you still lose out on time and self. Even if you get lucky and get the best parents others will still judge you. An unfair place "Imperfect place" of course when you compare that to an anime world that is without rules except those that are artificially created of course you'd choose the anime world over this one...the the magical thing is...everything we know and everything that exists in our head is only because of the Imperfect world...and what is super cool is that perfect things are created from an imperfect world. Just remember one thing that the real world has that anime will never have...a future that no man knows no matter how smart he gets or try to predict it because of the unlimited amount of variables and limited and lost knowledge we have at our disposal. (and the miracles of life) Which make life exciting and also scary...and also kinda like an anime lul. |
Sry guys, I'm the main character of this anime. |

Do you really meet yandere and kuudere people? Dandere, deredere? Anime just offers a variety of weird plots and characters. And those hairstyles, too.... I will admit the people you meet in anime or exceptionally entertaining...and it does take you to these hypothetical places that you normally wouldn't come across. Which is why I like anime because it's so mentally stimulating taking you to a world where anything is possible so it makes you look at your life and the real world in different perspectives. So thought provoking! Now does that make it more interesting than real life? I'd have to disagree and say no because everything in an anime you could have thought of yourself.I mean it is just a script written by another human after all. So technically when you watch an anime you're really in a way just listening to another person (or persons) thoughts. It's just another form of the social experience except if a different form which allows for different results. Now as for the hairstyles....well....believe me if my hair grew that pointy...you'd probably see alot more goku's walking around in the hood LOL. but since it doesn't eh I guess we will just say different is better in this case of anime to real life comparison. But still anime if just a derivative if real life so they only draw them like that because of the fact people are sick of the "uniform" look of the world standard "GROOMED" business model. |

ALtheCHOSEN said: So, why is anime better than our real life? Because real life is boring as shit. ALtheCHOSEN said: Is the real world truly that boring? Yes. ALtheCHOSEN said: Do we under appreciate real life? No. ALtheCHOSEN said: Do we not really see the beauty in the real world? Who or what is "the beauty" of which you speak? Probably boring if it exists though. ALtheCHOSEN said: Without the real world anime wouldn't exist Cool story bro. Without the real world, nothing would exist, and there would be no thoughts or opinions. Your point? ALtheCHOSEN said: so doesn't that mean real life is actually exciting since it created anime or is it because life moves so slowly that we say things like that? Discuss. No, are you retarded? The entire concept of fiction is that it's not reality. Not that anime is exciting in the first place. We say things like real life is boring because real life is boring, why the hell else would we say it? |
Be thankful for the wisdom granted to you. |

Life itself is not exciting and scary. We all have this kinda blurry shitty, idea of what life is, but it still depends in how people interpret it. In short, people uses something to either cope with something or to escape from something. |

ALtheCHOSEN said: Everyone uses fiction as a means of escaping, whether that be through books or movies or whatever. Maybe your life is good and you wonder why others dislike their lives. My life is uneventful and anime is an eventful thing in which others act out what I could be doing but don't feel like doing... usually with some twist mixed in (because we all know Kuroko no Basuke is sooo realistic). Though they may be scripts, we take interest in things that others think up and execute. Why do we read books? Why do we watch movies? Why do we play games? Why do we watch TV shows? ...Because they're interesting, of course.YaoiMaster said: I'd pick Yashiro over anyone in reality ^-^ I do not use anime as an escape method.
