You know how if an anime show takes place in a country that speaks a language other than Japanese they'd just go ahead and have characters speak in Japanese regardless for the viewers' benefit. However, there are other cases in which foreign characters visit Japanese and speak in their native language, yet voiced by a heavily accented Japanese actor, providing a cringing effect. Now, imagine if a anime set in the United States with every character being American took a more "realistic" approach, and all spoken dialogue is in subtitled English, still having Japanese voice artists. What impression to you think the show could have on the anime fandom, especially the English speaking one, and how marketable do you think such a show would be?

what if there wan an anime that was set in an american town in japan where the characters actually spoke engrish but it would be dubbed in english so the characters would actually speak japanese, that would be subbed in engrish, which is from the original english dub (but the SEA version where engrish is mainstream), in japanese voice over... and the voice actors would be japanese, of course

The show that has done this the most is BECK. They actually hired people that knew how to speak English well.

Engrish sometimes annoys me, sometimes its funny, sometimes its cute.

For example the ED of spice and wolf is adorable

Everytime the english guy in Kabaenri said something was hilarious af:

The engrish in FSN "i eme the bono my sod" is just so cringy it destroys the atmosphere for me

A whole anime in engrish would sound like the second type to me, i think it would be funny

First Squad: The Moment of Truth was originally released in Japanese but the director considers the Russian dub to be the official version. They do use actual Russian voice actors, though. There are also music videos like Good Morning and Bohemian Rhapsody that are entirely in English because they're just an anime music video of an English song. Ikoku Meiro no Croisée The Animation always has a little thing said at the beginning of each episode spoken in French by a real French Canadian living in Japan.

What if we get a Japanese company that hates America but still wants some cash so they demand that only Japanese people can voice the English dub but only if it's their 2nd language

In Aikatsu! the character Johnny Bepp (supposed to sound like "Johnny Depp") speaks mostly in Engrish, probably because he thinks it sounds cool.

Utsu Musume Sayuri was in Engrish for the whole time. Granted, it's a 3 minute meme show that has a MAL rating of 2.05.

I have an even better idea
what if there was a show that took place in japan where the characters spoke entirely in Japanese with english subtitles at the bottom. You know how some shows often have Japanese but it sounds cringy because the people don't know how to speak it or are learning? Well what if all the people were proper Japanese VA's speaking Japanese. We could call it an "anime" even.
every single one of my forum posts is dumb and invalid except for 1, I don't claim them it was a different person it was all fake

Beck has a lot of Engrish. It's cringe-worthy.

i ain't keeping a poker face, it's my nature

What but novelty is the point of that? Engrish in anime usually appears for like 20 seconds an episode at best, and if I were a Japanese watcher I know I wouldn't want to listen to 65% unintelligible words.

Get your little kiss! T.K. is best girl.

Also, extremely technically, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is entirely Engrish, as the film's dialogue was recorded originally in English because the director stated that the popularity of English made it logical to assume it'd be the standard language in the film's time period.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

I wouldn't call it Engrish, nor would I call it cringe-worthy.

It's perfectly competently written. It's just that the acting isn't the best. I don't know if I should blame the actors or the directors for this. On the one hand, finding actors that natively speak English probably isn't particularly easy in Japan and expecting the few they DO find to be phenomenal actors is going to be secondary. Granted, they probably could have called up FUNimation and more or less literally recorded everything over the phone, but I digress.

On the other hand, good actors can and will put out poor performances if the direction is poor and I would imagine a director that doesn't speak perfect American English would have trouble directing lines in English.

The only truly bad English we got was from Ryusuke and Maho because their actors clearly didn't actually speak English. Of course, if they wanted to do things 100% correctly, they would have cast native English speakers that also spoke fluent Japanese since the two of them are portrayed as being more comfortable speaking English due to growing up in New York. I understand that casting actors who speak Japanese with American accents for two of your lead roles isn't the easiest sell to your audience, but it would have been way more authentic.

I prefer when they dont speak engrish at all, i dont mind it in OP's and ED's.

Wow, no one mentioned Afro Samurai, which is 100% engLish and it features Samuel L Jackson and has badass fights.

Oshii is probably the only director that loves dogs. He thinks he's a dog himself.

That's right, its slime! It will dissolve your clothing slowly before my eyes!

Psycho Pass Movie - about 40% of the dialogue is in pure, distilled Engrish.

I'm surprised only one other person has mentioned it so far.
