I would assume that they don't just watch on TV, since that would be inconvenient due to different people's schedules.

And if so do they have legal sites with full libraries of anime like k***anime?

Also are there many illegal streaming sites in Japan?

The japanese actually don't handle the internet very well so I'm not convinced it's that big of a thing over there. Also the policies against it are fairly harsh IIRC.

What does happen is a lot of people use VCRs to record their favorite latenight anime. There's even a weekly chart for that. There's also people reverse importing the licensed versions of an anime from the west because it's cheaper than buying it in japan.

That being said I'm sure there are some ways to illegally watch anime, like nyaa. I just wouldn't know about them and I'm pretty sure it's not nearly as common as here based on knowing how japanese kids and young adults treat the internet.
I probably regret this post by now.

I don't know how they watch anime, but it must be so much easier. Don't have to pay for DVDs/legal stuff, don't have to illegally stream it.

In fact japanese people have to pay much more for their DVDs and BDs since they're expensive as fuck. Not sure where you're getting the information that they don't have to pay for those in Japan.

Only in the major cities is where it is easy to watch anime on TV in Japan, there's also another hurdle in that some anime air only on pay TV channels or have delaycasts on those that aren't pay TV channels and yes they have their own illegal streaming sites. Even worse is that legal streaming OFTEN goes the delaycast route for a lot of anime especially NND and airs 5 days to a few weeks after the initial TV broadcasts including the delaycasts on TV.

I'm not saying they don't have to pay for them, I meant that they can watch anime on TV, at least when it's airing. Oh, I'm sure DVDs are very expensive in Japan.

as @Pullman said the japanese actually record the anime TV shows

Answerman said:

Anybody could be watching late-night anime. Almost nobody is actually awake when new episodes air, of course, but nearly everybody has a DVR or a DVD/Blu-ray set-top recorder. (People actually bought those in Japan.) And if you look around what's being scheduled, you can see that there are surprisingly few patterns to what kind of shows are being programmed when.

My friend who lives in Tokyo downloads his anime, he doesn't watch anime anymore. His download speed is ~160 mbps so he pretty much instant downloads episodes. I kid you not, I was surprised when he showed me his internet speed test and by the fact that he downloaded a 1.2GB game on Steam, that took me 20 minutes, within 1 minute.

I always thought they just recorded it on TV

that's what I would do if I lived there

plus I saw it on Lucky Star lol

Screw Lucky Star, you could've gotten that important information from a vastly superior comedy:

They record it on tv. The average Japanese is less technologically literate than the average western. I mean look how long it took them to get into the smartphone era.

Though some download stuff. Internet streaming is hard in Japan though, especially with copyrights.

Isn't that the Anti-Download law that was passed in 2012? Normally, they would go after the uploader of said copyrighted content, but now, they go after those who download copyrighted content.

I don't know much detail about it but afaic, despite the fact that japanese people really loves One Piece, they really sucks when it comes to pirating.

Torrent Freak had an article about it. I don't know if they only target file sharing sites within Japan, international sites, or even both. Even more strange, I do see some Japanese IP addresses when I torrent anime. Makes me wonder if those guys are actually risking themselves to download it.

They watch it on TV and sometime record them if the time/schedule not convenient for them.

Japan didn't go for piracy because there's no need for them to do so.
But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

this too bust nt as much any more as tv ratings show

bakc when i was younger a prime time anime that gt under 5.0 rating was seen as afulure and to day its very rare for even pocket monters or precure to even get 5.5 ratings hell in the 90's to say 2005 it was common for all prime time anime to get 10.00 ratings lot of the time

hence why getting a 5.00 was seen as a bad thing bakc then [ 5.00 is still 6 mlioon vierewe] 5.00 = 5% of the total population but there you go

Just like what I said, most young otaku here don't know they had their own P2P networks and apps, actually more than one, instead of only using bt.

You are aware that technology to record stuff off television and watch it later has existed since the early 60s right? Maybe they use a DVR or VCR.

Though, yes, I'm sure some of them may just stream it somewhere like any tech savy pirate.

Most Japanese viewers catch shows when they air, record them, or buy it on disc. There are a lot of people in the world who only stream shows, but physical media and broadcast TV haven't died out quite yet.

Fun fact, you can get many of those "expensive as fuck" Blu-Rays and DVDs for a fraction of the price on the secondhand market. There are used Anime shops all over Tokyo. I found stuff that resellers try to sell for $300 on ebay for like $40 in Japan.

There are lots of legal Japanese streaming sites, guys. Niconico has pretty much every currently airing show but there are also other services like Yahoo! (no, really).

Here's a list of what Love Live! Sunshine is being streamed on, for an idea of where popular series are streamed. Note that most of these are Japan-only.

So, y'know, the options are there. Most people probably do just watch it on TV or record it for when it's not 2AM but there are many legal streaming options.

they also use nico-nico...the ones that watch legally that is.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

As other have already said, there are many ways: TV broadcast,TV recording, streaming (nico-nico video),buying BDs and some probably also download illegal torrents. And I've also heard that video rental shops still exist there,so some people just rent anime DVDs.

I imagine they have smart TV's or DVD players that are Wifi enabled with the appropriate apps so they can stream anime or movies etc., the technology has been changing so more videos are watched this way, instead of just laptops, and much of that tech is being made by Japanese companies like Sony. So I guess they may do that more in the future.
