The ending was pretty much about how Aion is unstoppable because he is a part of god, and that only god holds the wheels of fate in his hands.

My friends didn't like the ending. I guess they don't like an ending where one of the main character dies.

Personally, I'd have been absolutely pissed if it didn't occur. They practically guaranteed that would happen even from the first few episodes, and some miraculous way of preventing it or saving them would have just garnered a huge, disappointing WTF. The thing I can better understand is people just not getting the whole bit with Aion, who is at this point being portrayed as the true devil, and thus cannot be truly destroyed or stopped, as his very existence is necessary to the world.

Sad episode. The ending definitely was a tear jerker for me. But yes, if it didn't happen I don't think I would have liked the anime as much. Rosette dieing makes Chrno Crusade considerably more realistic that way.

And yes, Aion wins the battle. But, of course, he won't win the war.

Aion's level of victory is debatable. He set the stage for the Great Depression (and through it, WWII), and he certainly supplanted Lucifer, but that's not necessarily what he was aiming for. While it's true that those facts make this the Magdalene Order's defeat, that doesn't automatically make it Aion's victory. In the end, it can be argued that he never really succeeded in what he truly wanted, which was escaping god's plan and overthrowing heaven. The world didn't truly change in the sense that he desired - it just went through one of the most turbulent periods in history before restabilizing.

Edit: And when you think about it, Aion was used just like anyone else, a fact that his later appearance in the Vatican proves. After all, he shouldn't exist any more after his "fight" with Chrno. The fact that he's still around means that god wills it, and that means that he's part of god's plan.

I'm tired of this scenario too. Miracles happen too easily in anime. Good that Chrno Crusade didn't fall down this path of ruin.

after i watched the end of this show, i read the last few chapters from the manga and the ending in the manga is ALOT sadder and depressing as one of the characters is sortof frozen in time and grows up on their own and having to look back on all that happened years after

This episode made me cry. For the reasons already stated, I was glad it ended in a sad way rather than with a cop-out. But that doesn't change the fact that it put me in a funk. That was... man, depressing. Really.

I agree with many of you.
This ending is the saddest anim ending that I've seen so far, but that doesn't mean it was a BAD ending. Quite the opposite. I mean..I would have loved to see a happy ending too, but this ending made it far more realistic and thus made the anime unique. And since they did die with a smile on their face...
And the thing with Aion at the end..I didn't really understand why he was there again, but after reading your posts here I started thinking about it differently and it makes sense!

I have to say that I never expected Chrno Crusade to be THIS good! I've just re-watched it and it's still worth at least 10/10!!><

(BTW.. Chrono and Rosette are, in my opinion, one of the best anime couples so far *_* Naaaaaw!!)

I really liked this anime, especially the end of it. Even if i'm a guy it was hard to keep tears inside, i'm not the sensitive type, but the endig of Chrono really moved me. When they held each others hand, and chose death together besides living with without the other. Absolutely 5/5

One of the most emotional series I've seen up to now. Allthough the last episode did the emotional part,I loved the serie all the way through. I was dispointed they didn't kiss, that would have made it complete for me.

if you look away from the emotional stuff: how did Chrno die? injuries or something?
And for Aion, I can really say he won this one. This battle was more of a tie,he didn't accomplish what he wanted, and Rosette did die with Chrno,so they didn't win in that way either. allthough she would have died anyway early because of the contract. For why you see Aion again at the end should make sense to most people from what he says. As God,or Heaven you might say, need demons like to him exist in order to have people to have faith in that God exist. it's a complicated story wich I will not continue on about at this time.
My point was anyway: Aion will keep coming back to make bad things happend, and God will send new apostles to keep it going. Entertainment for God?

I like this because they make it seems like God and the demons were the one's who were the shadows who made people go fanatic and go to war for the sake of christianity or whatever. 10/10 from me.

Yeah I thought he said that yet he had a contract with Mary Magadelene and was alive when she died.

Kinda sad, kinda anti climatic with the whole thing with Aion vs Chrono. It was an ok series. I disliked how useless Rosette became in the face of Aion for like the entire last 5 or 6 episodes. And Satella next time uh bring a weapon...that might help. Kinda messed up how they showed a quick glimpse of her corpse and that was it.

Also was like WTF at Chrono and Rosette missing for 6 months and not even attempting to tell their friends they were ok (well relatively speaking of course). Joshua's situation was really sucky. As for the Remington thing, I thought his revealtion was a bit late in the game but it sucked that he was stuck being all alone.

The last bit was interesting but kind of WTF worthy. I mean in real life, John Paul II didn't die just severely injured ( he was never physically the same after the incident) but this is alternate history so did he die? I wouldn't mind if they made a sequel spinoff with Remington and some new nun and/or priest from the Order dealing with the fallout of the situation and Aion once and for all.

Rosette attacked him with her blood, injuring him. Later on Chrno said that his injuries still hadn't healed. At the end, Rosette wanted to release the seal so he could heal himself, but Chrno said no. So I'm pretty sure he died from the injuries Rosette gave him.

Very first post here, so please dont blame me. ^^

But i dont think so, that Chrono died by his injuries. I thought this was explained in anime... Since he lost his horns, he had no power, and he'd died without the contract with Rosetta, which gave him power to live. And when Rosetta died, he had absolutley no power, and he was injured too. Okay... we can say, that injuries also was one of the reasons he died, but it is not the main reason. I personally think , if he made another contract with someone else, he could live, but he chose to die with her. I still wonder, he's a devil, so i think that he can't enter Heaven, whatsoever. What do you think about this ?

Sorry for my bad english, it's not my motherlanguage.

Edit: I think i found some more rational answer for that at-the-very-end-Aion problem. If you can remember, sometimes before in the series he did not show up "truly himself". I mean by this , that sometimes he just sent a ghost or shadow(call it whatever you want) of himself. Maybe that happened in the last episode too, maybe...

Also, pretty interesting, is Minister Remington also a devil? He says that he's also a Sinner , but im not quite sure if he really is. It'd be the answer how he got so fast to San Francisco.

He did die from his injuries. He got severely wounded in the battle with Joshua, even before he got his head blown off. He was taking a large amount of her life right there and then he got his head blown off, and instead of healing it, he turned into stone. When he does finally heal himself, that takes away a very LARGE amount of life from Rosette, but I think he only healed as much as he could, because then he went back into the other form. He never looked healthy again, he was always tired and exhausted.

Then, when he goes to Central Park and throws his horns at Aion and then Aion impales him back with his own horns. Rosette says then that she will give all her life to him and she heals him and he fights as a Devil, taking away more and more of her life, and then he defeats Aion.

But then he spits up a ton of blood and collapses because he also got injured in the fight. I am pretty sure it's THOSE wounds that he did not heal, so he turns back into his little form and they go and live together for six months until they die.

He still had injuries at the end because Rosette offers to give up the rest of her life for him, but he says no because he doesn't want to live without her.

As for Ewan (Remington); He was not a 'Sinner' like a Devil, but a sinner because he had sinned.

Ewan was an Angel sent to them to 'watch' over things, but he wasn't supposed to get involved or DO anything. When he did finally come and fight, he sinned and then he lost his being an Angel, but was still stuck being an immortal, without any powers.

yeap, that was sad, but their death, Chrno and Rossette's, was the most beautiful death that i have ever seen in an anime.
they died, but it was together and it was peacefully... and that's what stopped me from shedding my usual amount of tears when some important/main character dies in a series ^_^

After watching a load of shit-tastic series and just about giving up on anime altogether, I have to say thanks to a friend of mine for recommending this to me. Chrno Crusade might not have been everyone's favorite, but it certainly has become one of mine.

Aion is one of the best villains I've seen to date. The rest of the characters... honestly I'm very easily annoyed, so it's such a rarity for me to have loved all of them. I cried like a baby at the end.

LOVED this. It'll stay with me for quite a long time.

This anime almost made me cry. I had tears in the eye I could barely hold back. I can't remember any anime which made me feel that way. Truly beautiful ending.

Though I have a question. How is it that Aion is way stronger than Chrono, although he too doesn't have his horns anymore?

I didn't really like any of the characters in this series other than Azmaria and Joshua (When he had the horns, and wasn't in fettle position), so the ending wasn't so sad at all for me, mostly I was kinda pissed they didn't wrap it up by Chrno seeing her dead or just some more after ending scenes showing what the characters went on to do.

Edit: Ignore most of that, for some reason I I thought I watched all 24 but, I was only on 22 xD.

Sad ending was sad... I was barely able to hold back tears when Rosette cried, saying she didn't want to die. Well, at least she got to die together with Chrno. But I thought it was a great ending - it's good to have an ending where evil "kinda wins" once in a while.

Chrno Crusade was great. It had lots of awesome and epic moments and nice fights. Animation, sound, music, characters were all great. The story was good and I never lost interest. Not to mention some episodes were simply hilarious!

edit: I did feel that the episode 23 felt a bit rushed though, and the final fight between Chrno and Aion was anticlimactic.

A shame even Satella and her older sister had to die as well... ;_;

Chrno is the best. I actually liked that they died, to be honest. I mean, it makes me horribly sad and I cry hysterically every time, but that's what the anime tells you will happen the whole entire time. There is no, "We will find a way to save you, Rosette (from the contract)", it's just about saving Joshua. If they hadn't died, it would have been a bit cliche and misleading. They have a beautiful ending.

I always think they could make a sequel where it would go into whether or not they went to Heaven/Hell.

My next new hope is they will remake the anime more true to the manga, like they did for FMA, but I doubt that will happen. But I can hope!

Good ending, which ended in the way "If the anime gets very popular we might continue the story, but if we don't, its still a good ending."

Fun to see Rosettes reincarnation, the angel lady who will take over rosette's job. :)

Wonder if she is the main character in the next anime if it will ever come, and if she will pact with a devil too. :/

I have to say that in the first half of the show I think it was pretty slow and not all that interesting. It really picked up well in the second half as the plot was advancing at such a rapid pace.

Ending was obviously incredibly sad and the battle between Aion and Chrno did not bother me because both of them had been weakened a great deal without their horns. (something people seem to forget)

Aion is the devil and his appearance at the end confirms it. He can never truly die because God needs demons so the world can realize the "holiness" of God.

Oh and to the person who was wondering if Chrno would be allowed into Heaven I have no reason to think otherwise. He clearly had repented for his sins and it would go against everything the religion stands for if God would not forgive him. He used to be an angel at one point in his existence.

overall I think this is an 8/10. First have is 7/10 and second half was a 9/10.

Great ending. I think things rly had to happen that way. cuz in the end, the whole picture is way bigger than just Rosette or Chrno alone. This is the battle between good and evil literally. Rosette made a contract and I definitely didnt want any deus ex machina coming in there and magically getting her out of it. The danger she put herself in with the contract is what gave the show a lot of its edge. And of course Chrno would choose to die with her than take her last bit of life to heal himself and live on.

Also I think Aion is like a force of evil. and evil will always exist. He's not human so you cant rly demand that he "die and go to hell". HEY, maybe he DID and they just sent him back to continue his work, ha now think about that! But srsly, the same way people keep getting the stigmata and being chosen by god etc, Aion has his stuff to do too.

I dont see it as anyone winning or losing because this war is something that's rly gonna go on till the end of the world. Just because main chars die doesnt mean we "lost". And the villain is just there cuz he has some.. unfinished business lol.

8/10. Would be more if things didnt take so long to get rolling. I'm noticing that abt a lot of anime lately...

I just finished it and I have to say that the ending was well done. I liked the tragic end of Rosette and Chrono, which is also in the manga and yet a bit different. Also the warning towards mankind. It really makes you feel small... Nice use of previous events. Likeable characters and development... The first half was quite boring, but the last ten episodes were definitely the best. Finally, an anime-only ending that actually is closed.

8/10. Only thing that lacked was a real-real good story and animation. The sad yet happy ending was really nice.

Well. Sad, but great ending to overall good show.
I am not of those who feel sorry for characters usually, but I must admit Rossete crying about not wanting to die really touched me. Damn, those were some serious emotions. Oh well, it's gonna stay in my memory for a long time, just like many other classic endings.
As for Aion, I really liked that guy. Great villain, really likeable character. As for his "winning" in the end, I wouldn't really call it a winning, more like fulfilling his role on this world. As long as there is world there will be evil, no matter what.

ok thought i would clear one thing up chrono may have been a devil but what everyone fails to realise is that his body didn't vanish after he died. every other devils did even Aion, but hes didn't. which implies he has a soul and can theoretically get into heaven and probably did. Well he F**ken better have. Yes Aion was the devil and can never die. i thought the ending was horribly upsetting but it did emphasise that god will not help us, hence rossette died. he didn't jump out and give her, her time back the rat but hopefully theirs paradise on the other side and that where all just being tested. which is the real world we live in

One of the best ending a scenarist has ever come up with for an anime, ever. It truly transcends the original setting and delivers ten times more than what it was designed to be. Terrific.
