I'm an awesome mom =P

My 3 year old just had a major surgery and he's pretty much trapped in bed (or the couch) for the summer. If I'm going to watch tv all summer, there's only so much educational kids stuff I can take. I need to watch stuff with him that we can both enjoy. He likes shows that are slice of life/harem (good boy, right?) and extra moe. He's watched shows like K-on!, Kanon, Fruits Basket, and Hyakko! with me. Right now we have Howl's Moving Castle on.

Give me recommendations!

Other than every Studio Ghibli movie (My Neighbour Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away being some of the top ones) you should probably try something like Shugo Chara and Princess Tutu.

They are magical girl anime, but I'm of the belief that boys and girls shouldn't be hindered by gender roles. So if he likes bright colourful anime with cute characters, then those would be tops.

You can also try Haibane Renmei, though there's only one scene with some blood in the first episode, it's pretty mellow and great for an adult to sit through as well.

Oh, and Strawberry Marshmallow, perhaps? It's a comedy about younger kids.

Kappa no Coo to Natsuyasumi and Steamboy are nice movies as well, though there is some violence in it.

Chi's Sweet Home
Princess Tutu - Aimed for girls, but it's really lovely and very fantasious.
Aria
Kaleido Star

If he likes fantasy stories, those we used to read when we were little, older anime like Cinderella, Candy Candy, Heidi and Marco, Dogtanian (just because it pwns)

And if he likes action, give him some sports anime. My 6 year old godson loves those.

My goodness that's a lot of responses.

@seishi: Aria puts me to sleep, but that's on the list. As is Azumanga Daioh. He's seen some of Manabi and thinks it's adorable (which it is >__< )

@tehnominator: I dropped Shugo Chara, but yeah I have no problem with those either. I plan on enrolling him in dance, so yeah =P

No Naruto (violence), no Strawberry Panic. I pushed my limits with him with Princess Princess. Not introducing him to yaoi or yuri!

Shows like Chi's Sweet Home are good too, cos he loves animals. We were watching Earl & Fairy and he gave me such a WTF face at the talking (and walking on two legs) cat.

As he likes moe I am going to secong Azumanga, Totoro, Manabi Straight and Ichigo Mashimaro.

I will also add Kamichu! as the main character is really moe and I would say it is suitable for children of all ages.

Also, as another, you try Hare + Guu as it has bright colors and is funny. It is a bit on the weird side though and I suggest you avoid the OVAs (Deluxe and Final) entirely as the first is more perverted and the second one is not as funny..

Same here. I can't understand how (or why) a 3 yr old would like harem.

If so, Yattaman?

I don't really see much that's good for 3 yr olds.

Yup yup, you all read right: THREE. No, he doesn't read subs but parents make their kids watch shows like Dora, Diego, and Nihao Pai lin (or w/v) so why not japanese too? >_<

Nothing with nudity or sex scenes! Geez! I thought that was a given. Kannagi had brief moments of what I call bathing suit nudity.

What is "SHnY"? Is that a japanese acronym for Haruhi? Haruhi yells too much =P My little one gets upset at yelling. Doesn't really mind violence, but why introduce him early? And loooooves when people hug and kiss on tv (again, please nothing with sex scenes!).

Dennou Coil may be a bit too advanced, but it's really good and has kids in it.

He might like Dennou Coil's first half or so, but it gets quite complex (and scary! Hell, even *I* was scared) closer to the end.

I'd also suggest some ones that have already been brought over to North America, like Pokemon, Digimon, Monster Rancher, Beyblade, Metabots, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. You could also try some of the sports-type anime (although, the only one I ever watched was Whistle!, which had a decent story but lacklustre animation, IMO).

Haha, you're a great mom. That's exactly what I'm gonna do with my kids when I grow up. :D

Lucky Star, I'd suggest. And Azumanga Daioh. I haven't watched it yet, but Hidamari Sketch looks friendly. Ichigo Mashimaro is really funny as well. And a couple fun movies are Spirited Away, The Cat Returns, Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro.

Sorry, I don't know what restrictions you allow your children. But they're all very friendly and should be alright for even the most strict parent. Hope I helped!

Nadia: Secret of Blue Water

Has an adorable tiger as the lead. Also the girl is African-American and there's a lot of traveling. France and Africa.

In 1889, the world is on the pinnicle of great discoveries in technology. In mankinds grasp for the future, a sinister foe known only as Gargoyle, obsessed with restoring the former Atlantean empire to the glory it once held, begins his plans to take over the world. Nadia, with the help of a young inventor, Jean Ratlique, and Captain Nemo of the submarine Nautilus, must fight to save the world from Gargoyle and Neo-Atlantis. Based on the Novel '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' by Jules Verne.

Castle in the Sky (movie)

A girl named Sheeta falls out of the sky and lands in Pazu's arms. Soon after a gang of air pirates led by Dola, as well as a mysterious man named Muska, are on their tails. The chase leads them to a floating castle that once belonged to an ancient race of people.

Kodocha

There are some hug/kiss scenes throughout and early on. Sana does seem to yell/be eccentric/randomly sing. This anime is so random and yet heart-felt.

Sana Kurata has a charmed life. Not only is her mother is a famous, award-winning writer, but she's the star of the hit TV comedy "Child's Toy" while still in the fifth grade. But Sana's biggest concern is Akito Hayama, a pint-sized hellion who's organized the boys in their grade-school class into a mass of unending noise and violence. With the help of Rei, her manager, chauffeur and "pimp," Sana is determined to win back control of the classroom from her new arch-enemy. But as her crusade continues, Sana moves further into Akito's life, and finds that he might not be entirely bad...or entirely safe.

When they say Yu-Gi-Oh!, they mean Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duel Monsters. Yu-Gi-Oh!, on the other hand, might be too dark & violent for a 3 year-old.

Posting again. Dubs, huh? Well, a couple above as I said have dubs like Lucky Star recently and Azumanga Daioh. And all of the movies I had said. But Spirited Away has a bit of a bloody scene, nothing fighting or too harsh, though. Ichigo Mashimaro and Hidamari Sketch do not have dubs yet, though.

Castle in the Sky, too. That's a cute one. Fruits Basket's a good one, too, but again a tiny suggestive scene that's kinda suggestive but not really.

Sorry, not too much else for dubs. But I agree with Konfig, anything Ghibli you can't really go wrong. :]

I'm going to go with everyone here and say GHIBLI WINS ALL, but you probably want more.

Azumanga, Lucky Star, and Manabi are good, as has been said.

I would also recommend the first 13 episodes or so of Dennou Coil. You can stop there before the plot starts and it will still work, since the first half is episodic and has a very Ghibli feel to it. But once the plot kicks in, it'll be both scary and way over his head.

Hayate no Gotoku would be good. It's got the bajillion-way romance stuff going and is also a lot of fun, good for a laugh.

If he liked Kanon, then he might like the other Key/KyoAni stuff, too, namely Air and Clannad.

NieA_7 might be interesting, although I must warn you that it takes place in a bathhouse so there is some nudity relating to that (nothing too terrible, although you may want to preview it), and there is one episode where a character burns pot in the bathhouse thinking it's incense. Otherwise, NieA's a lot of fun.

Ouran Host Club fits the harem bill (reverse-harem, anyway) and has a lot of zany fun and crazy characters.

While I haven't seen them myself, I've heard that Honey&Clover and Nodame Cantabile are good in the SOL/Romance department as well.

Well, there's my two pennies. I'll finish up this post by saying that your son is AWESOME if he's got this kind of taste in anime at age three (get 'em started early! <evil laugh>), and I hope he's feeling better soon.

The Earth King has invited you to Lake Laogai. You will be honored to accept his invitation.

What is LoGH?

LoGH = Legend of the galactic Heroes.
But that was just a joke because the user above recommend it ^_^

Violent? Not really...Kino is just too out there for a 3 year old. He wouldn't get it.

Sorry but Kino no tabi IS violent.
This series talk about serious matter like Genocide or Human experience and we can see a lot of people get killed like animals or someone being brain washed and loose all of his consciousness.
This is not really physical violence but more psychological violence and for some people (especially the kids) those things are not bearable to see.

Really trust me, don't watch this series it may looks like innocent but this is definitily not suitable for a kid (especially if he is 3 years old) not because it is intelectual but just it is really violent.

Otherwise I recommend Aria the Animation and Dennou Coil, I think he will appreciate it even if this is not harem but there is a lot of moe ^_^

What are you talking about? Nobody gets brainwashed, and a lot of people aren't shown being killed. Animals neither. [Excepting maybe 2 episodes,] Basically everything violent is either done off-screen or implied. You make KnT sound like Berserk with peoples' heads getting chopped off or something. Kino DOES, however, go too far over the head of a 3 year-old [intellectually], which is something we can both agree on.

Also, maybe Shinigami no Ballad and Yoshinaga-san'chi no Gargoyle? From what I recall, neither had anything too violent.

I was actually talking about Kino no Tabi.
For the brainwash just rewatch episode 11.
For the Genocide just rewatch episode 12.

Actually 2 episodes is quiet something for a show which have only 13 episodes and I can bring much more examples if you want. Just like the 2nd episode which talking about slavery and cannibalism.

I told you this is not physical violence like blood shed or peoples' heads getting chopped off as you said but only psychological violence ....
But well think what you want, this is actually off-topic .

I second Keroro Gunsou. It's quite visual, should be able to amuse. Azumanga should be fine, even if there's a lot of language dependent humour, it's also visually expressive - all the cats, and Chiyo's "dad", just to mention a couple of things. If K-ON works, I don't see why Azumanga shouldn't.

Moh, I say go with all the Studio Ghibli movies you can think of:

My Neighbor Totoro
The Cat Returns
Spirited Away

You probably should stay away from Princess Mononoke though ^^;; Blood and gore in that one... And Grave of the Fireflies is pretty sad and more mature .__.

The next ones are pretty much romance ones so I'm not sure if he'll like them ._.;; But Fruits Basket was too so..

I think Toradora! would be a good one. Pretty funny too... It's a little bit more mature though.

Ultra Maniac maybe? I'm not too sure if you'll bother enjoy that though. It's not very Slice of Life-ish but it has a very laid-baid feel to it. The girl characters are pretty cute but not that much moe in it D=

Lovely Complex was a very clean romance and filled to the brim with humor in it...

Minami-ke was also very nice. It had plenty of silly humor in and it was a Slice of Life one. Probably should just stick to the first season though...

To tell you the truth, I can't think of any harem that doesn't have any sexual connotations in them ^^;;
