What everyone else said Layout sucks. I also don't like rating -/5.

Honestly, an odd-numbered scale is better. On a 10-point scale, 5 and 6 are the same value.

I'm pretty sure MAL would just masacare hummingbird. It would be like if the USA went to war with Canada.

I'm using it as a backup list.

The UI is definitely better, and the community is rather unique since the community (before MAL joined) know each other fairly close. While my visit in HB they've been doing alot of inside jokes that most 'new' registered people to HB wouldnt understand. I've been using MAL for a few months now and i could easily tell the difference between the two sites.

What made me not like it was the forum layout and the very cheesy quotes that appear on every page.

This. And how needlessly large the boarder was, it was even more annoying that it was on top of the page, they could have put it somewhere else.

I don't like hummingbird, it's layout feels more tablet friendly. I prefer the layout of MAL because it's self-explanitory.

It's probably just going to be a back-up list for me now.
After a lot of MAL members began plaguing HB and turning a lot of threads into, "MAL Security sucks, HB 4 life" shit it really just made me stop going on the site.(I mean, DDoS attacks aren't exactly a joke. )
I appreciate it more when the communities can just talk about more than just bashing a site, which a few did, but a lot of it was fighting. It might calm down sooner or later, but for now I'm just going to stay away.

I have two main issues with it. I dislike the interface, MAL is much more convenient and accessible to me. And the other reason is that every time I try to load my list, it crashes -_-

I'm sticking to MAL.

Hm the layout was okay but I prefer MAL's since I'm used to it. The site was very slow, but that may be because of the influx of people from MAL. No customizable lists sucks. One thing I liked better was the posting system.

As for the community, it seemed more laid back, and there was less you had to do for your post to be considered 'good'. This has its ups and downs.

Nice backup list as well!

User interface looks annoying to my eye, tries to be complex and ends up being annoying and the forum looks annoying. It will only act as a back-up for me. Only thing I like more in HB than in MAL is the Upcoming section. Other than that, it pretty much is just a back-up site.

I never thought about leaving MAL, because I'm too used to this site and I'm not the kind of person who easily changes her habits. I had nothing to do while waiting for MAL to be up again, and I thought about taking a look at that site. I read amazing things about it... such a complete database! such loving users! such intuitive layout!

I entered the site and I couldn't even navigate. I couldn't understand anything about the layout. Went to the forums and found the same users that use/used to hang around on MAL. Clicked on a random username to see the profiles layout and found out that... they don't even have a manga database.
I instantly clicked the X button.

Hummingbird at the moment is still far too bare bones for me. It's pretty, but that's about it. MAL not only provides much more data, it also displays it all in a more efficient way. Plus, no manga section as of yet = only half as useful.

Not me. I was playing Burnout Dominator and NBA 2K12 on my PS2 during all this time. What I knew about their design and everything is from just one visit when I went there to make a back-up account for my list due to the hacker. But for everyone else, I'll agree with you.

While it's pretty slick, there are too few options, no manga list and it's also a lot slower. Plus, it has no MAL Updater-like tool so there's no way it can compete right now.

From my observation, it is a nice passive-aggresive community.
There is some pent up anger atmosphere and a low tolerance to sarcasm.

It's like a crapsaccharine world waiting to blow up. Creepy.

Other than some sparkly designs and the developers actively taking feedback from the community, Hummingbird is nothing next to MAL.

Granted, I've been on Hummingbird long before I the hacker started his low-blow attack on us, but it feels like they're trying a bit too hard at this point. Seriously, it feels like everything they do is to try and move one step ahead of MAL. Even the devs seem to keep asking "Okay, what else do we need to do before you switch from MAL?!" "We have gigguk guys, so come to us! He's obviously the authority on anime for you dweebz!"

And the community? Pssshh. As much as I get annoyed at the elitists antics and blatant baiting on these forums, that's what makes MAL fun and interesting and the users cool people to talk with. I may not like your opinions on certain anime/fandom stuff, but I still at least respect each person as a member of this community. But pretty much every thread on Hummingbird degrades into a listing thread without much room or motivation or willingness for debate.

And it pissed me off to no end to see Hummingbird making fun of the fact that MAL was hacked with its own little "hacked page." It'd be funny if they were the next target.

I like that Hummingbird has three ratings in form of smileys. Good, bad or Average. Every rating system should be simple like that. Also, people seem to have good taste over there as Spice and Wolf has the 8.8+ rating it deserves.

I doubt that will last long. The trolls aren't sinking in to HB yet. They're still a bunch of naive chickens that are wandering around unable to do much.

Like AndyRayy said, what makes MAL good is our elitists, trolls, baiters and the normals. Unless they can get an equally good bunch of elitists, trolls and baiters and change their interface, they've got no chance against MAL.
