At the same time, I don't like that kind of manga and anime either. An example of shoujo-ai anime would be: Maria-sama ga miteru and check out the list of seiyuu, oh wow!! Are they lesbians? Of course, not.

But still, they are all gay for Nabatame Hitomi...

If we're speaking of demographics and the aimed at audience for most Yaoi and Yuri, they're kind of completely different. Most Yaoi is drawn by and for a female audience. Most Yuri is drawn for and by males. This is good to consider since it changes what type of stories you encounter in these genres.

Also, there's an assumption here that all Yaoi and Yuri contains explicit sexual scenes, which can't be further from the truth. Sure, there's a significant number of titles that contain these, but it's certainly not the majority.

As someone who identifies as pansexual (or bisexual for the most part, I dislike labels lol) and a Yuri fan, and less so a Yaoi fan, I find it comforting to read stories which I can relate to. Having said that, it's hard to find good yuri that doesn't snowball into melodrama or good yaoi where the characters aren't just "females with male features".

If you consider yourself straight, and still enjoy reading these stories, in my opinion, it shows that you're open-minded and a better human being than most - for being able to recognize a romance between two same sex characters as valid and just as romantic as any between two people of different genders... *shrugs* But that's just my opinion :)

That's... kind of ironic, no?

I personally wouldn't read yaoi not because I'm close-minded, but because I don't find the relationship interesting because I can't relate to it.

(Not to say I read yuri either, as I don't find it any more interesting. I feel pathetic enough fapping to real porn, let alone drawn porn or even worse, drawn lesbian romantic relationships.)

Depends on what you're asking.

In Japan, there is a different industry entirely for manga aimed at gay men. Yaoi, in Japan, is made for women. And I've yet to hear of any gay man in Japan actively being interested in Yaoi.

In America, a different story entirely. Yaoi is appreciated by the gay or bi demographic in the otaku sub-culture. As far as male following goes, that's the majority of it. There is also a smaller percentage of men who just read it to one degree or another, but by all accounts are straight (this poster is one of them). I have my own reasons for it, I'm not sure what other straight men are motivated by.

Yuri is more interesting. My understanding of Yuri is that the industry is a lot more diverse than the Yaoi industry. Now, designations change all the time, but again my understanding is Yuri has been targeted at both men and women in Japan. Yuri has (or had) a much broader defenition, and could range from what we usualy associate with the term (porn. porn! PORN!) to flowery, over-worded, pretty stories. I have a feeling we can agree, however, that most of the Yuri out there today is targeted at men.

Yes.

If you like to see guys fucking other guys, and you're a guy, chances are your gay. Same goes with girls. I don't really see how you can't be. I mean Yaoi and Yuri are pornography, and I'd say 99% of the people who look at/read gay pornography are probably gay.

Nah i could see girls liking yuri (the yuri i've seen at least) and being straight. But a guy enjoying watching other guys do sex related things with eachother, ehh that's just gay lol.

Double standard yes, but it's true.

I enjoy yaoi and yuri, but I am not attracted to real women at all. Except for a few of them, they generally disgust me and I don't want to be around them. However, that does not mean I am not open to a relationship with a woman if somehow I happen to fall in love with one. Whatever works.

I generally find it interesting to see how they interact in whatever I read/watch, because men don't have that sort of softness and it gets kind of old after a while.

But seriously, I kid not. Try it sometime (unless said bar is in San Francisco. Then avoid that like the plague if you're straight).

This is an interesting thread. I used to say yuck for boy x boy relationship or anything that pertains to it, but somewhere in recent months, I find yaoi interesting, particularly in anime. Because of yaoi which has more drama, I begun to enjoy shoujo - drama/slice of life.

I think, what Krelian said is true.

Krelian said:
No, not really. They could just as easily be bi, and I expect plenty of people who watch that sort of thing are straight as well. It's purely imaginary and animated to boot, so it has a little less connection to actual sexual preference than one might expect.

And I think, yaoi and yuri were originally intended for females.

from wikipedia:
Yaoi (やおい)[nb 1] is a popular term for fictional media that focuses on homosexual male relationships, yet is generally created by and for females.

It is the pure truth. Because many women (me included) go to gay bars for the simple fact that nobody will attack them and they get free service. If it happens that a guy hooks up on a conversation it is a pleasant surprise to find they are, at least, bi.

Also, Yaoi was an artistic movement created by women and for women with nothing better to do. 70s ftw. I passed many exams due to this knowledge. As for yuri, I have no idea and I find it totally unnecessary. If it appears, I focus on the art and "plot" (whatever), take off the sound and ignore the details of the fluids.

Furthermore, if you like lolicon you're a pedophile, if you've ever enjoyed a hentai involving incest you want to sleep with your family members, and if you have a rape fetish you should go to jail. What you enjoy in fiction, ESPECIALLY porn, is exactly what you enjoy in real life!

(That was sarcasm, for those of you who aren't sure.)

Wow, that was taken completely out of context, was it not?

How many people that look at gay porn are gay? Lets take a survey. Being gay is different than having a fetish. The pedophilia thing I'm not even going to touch.

Is Yaoi really porn though? I am female and i dont read yaoi/yuri normally but I have read and viewed shows with those themes before. I am straight even still after watching and I did enjoy alot of those shows too.

Even if there is explicit images or scenes in a show showing sex I dont think it is necessarily "porn". Porn is something that is intended to stimulate you and that is its sole purpose. Like hentai is about sex or whatever fetish is portrayed, its not about story.. sure some hentai might have a story that might actually be pretty good but isnt it just as a rule one sex scene after another? The Yaoi/yuri stories I have seen or atleast browsed through arent all that way. What I mean its not all about the sex.

However I do agree with you on this point that if your looking at gay pornography or any other kind of fetish porn then you are probably into that or at the very least curious.

Being gay is definitely not the same thing as having a fetish. My point is that enjoying gay porn is the same as any other fetish -- it can play a part in your sexual prefrences, but it doesn't have to. You can enjoy rape porn while knowing that rape is a horible crime that should be punished, and you can enjoy gay porn while having no desire to sleep with a member of the same sex.

(My appologies for the rather extreme metaphors, by the way. They're the most prominant things that come to mind when it comes to things you see in porn, but don't necessarily actually want to do.)

wow, i've just learned quite a great deal of new vocab :) Thanks, I love enlarging my sexual dictionary.

Obviously this topic is under much debate, and I suppose to a lot of people the concept of not being gay but being attracted to people of the same sex getting it on with each other is pretty incomprehensible (not necessarily saying that this concept is true/not true since I haven't even come to a conclusion what my opinion is).

The only tidbit I can put into this discussion is that there is a difference between lesbians and girls who are willing to admit that they find other girls are hot. (referring to a previous post i'm to lazy to quote :[ ). Lesbians are attracted to the same sex, while girls who find other girls hot is more like admiration. You can find girls hot and still be straight, since what your thinking is more along the lines of "omg, she's so hot. I wish I was her" rather than "I'm going to rip off her clothes and do her like there's no tomorrow." I'm not quite certain if this type of mind stream is the same for boys. I just know this cause practically every girl I know, including myself, thinks other girls are hot and are perfectly straight (though I'm not quite sure where I stand considering I enjoy my yaoi and who knows what that means-i'm a straight transexual? :S).

Anomalous: I personally enjoyed your metaphors. C: Your sarcasm tickles me.

describes it best. :<

I read pretty much any sort of paring and hold is on the same level. man x woman, man x man, woman x woman, ??? x man, ??? x woman, ??? x ???, etc. I don't think I really care in my fiction.

But in real life, I tend not to get along with women. I prefer men, but on "The Kinsey Scale" I am most definitely a 1. Women are not that interesting to me in real life. In close proximity they rarely get me going. Some women are absolutely beautiful though, and usually only from afar. That's why I like yuri manga, they (sometimes) insert better personalities, and it has nice boobies. I like boobies. But if the right women came along and I was single I'd go for it. I don't expect to ever be single again, since I am marrying a man, so I don't have to worry about women or men (and I consider all other women and men to be of equal interest, ie. "huh, I didn't even notice them. They are nice looking but so?")

I don't like real porn at all, of any gender. it scares me... The people always look ugly to me, no matter what. I like manga and art, so it's nice to read.

Also, I think in a way I just like romance stories where they have sex. Sex is important and I'm obviously a pervert and like it.

But a certain someone's penis is best. /end
