Do they look good? Do they attract a certain kind of person? All other fedora related thoughts are welcome.

Personally, I think they look hideous the vast majority of the time. In terms of attracting a certain kind of person, I've never really liked anyone who I've known to wear a fedora regularly. They weren't assholes or anything (in fact they were all genuinely nice guys), just very eccentric to the point of annoyance. That said, I'm talking like 4-5 people, so my sample size isn't very large.

This thread's creation was prompted by this tumblr, which I can't stop laughing at.

I'm kinda torn between this topic.

If you're wearing a suit, have a long face, short hair, the right kind of facial features, and a slender or lean build then yay

But if you're like 98% of everyone who wears a fedora now-a-days, aka, a hippy haired fatass who wears it with a T-shirt then definitely nay.

Also if you have a genuine reason to wear one like you're albino and you live in a fairly sunny area, that also allows a yay

Yes, however those who wear them well look very good. I once dated someone who wore one well.

A friend of mine keeps saying a fedora would fit me well...I'm not so certain about that myself though.

And of course there's plenty of people who look ridiculous in fedoras, but the problem here is not the fedora, the problem is those people who wear things that don't fit them just because they think that's cool or trendy or whatever. It's the same with every other kind of clothing or accessory.

Good in the old days - back enough that most people who would be okay wearing them are dead or near their end.

Fedoras nowadays are just worn by hipsters and idiots trying way too hard to look "cool" and making themselves look like dipshits.

I own a little collection of hipster fedoras.

The problem is not the fedoras themselves, but that a lot of people don't know how to dress up to them. Take the link in the OP, for example. You have a bunch of guys in T-shirts, which of course is going to make them look like a teenager or a nerd/hippie or some combination thereof. Then, you have the guy with a vest with a leather jacket, sunglasses, and a fucking skull on his fedora -- he looks like douchebag, no surprise. The guy in the black coat and red shirt would have looked like a chauffeur with or without the fedora. I think the guy in the white shirt (6th pic down) is the only one that looks coordinated.

I was considering buying a fedora.

Thank god you showed me this blog. I mean, I don't buy in to that "nice guy" bullshit, Libertarianism or telling people just how geeky I am, but I would rather steer clear of anything associated with these kind of people.

I have to wear a trilby/fedora-like monstrosity at work. Even I readily admit I look ridiculous with it on.

The only person I've ever met who actually suits a fedora is a middle-aged teacher I sometimes assist. But he looks like someone fresh out of the 1920's, he even has a pocket-watch. So the way I see it, go all out with the look, or don't wear one at all. Very few people can successfully incorporate a fedora into their style.

Most of these dudes wear a collared shirt. My views on fedoras are that if you wear one, it could only look good if you wore clothing to suit it. If not, you'd look like every terribly unfashionable nerd that comes to mind when people think of a fedora.

It just depends on who is wearing it, what they're putting it with, yadda yadda. I've seen some guys look 10 times sharper with one, so most of the time I don't mind them.

If you can pull one off, by all means wear one.

I was completely serious.

People who claim to be nice guys and complain about how they can't pick up women are pathetic idiots. Not that I am not a nice guy (I am obviously) but I don't expect to score with women by virtue of that fact, nor do I resent women for not dating me even though I have that characteristic.

I am a Libertarian, only in the traditional sense. I believe in personal freedom as far as things like gay marriage and things like smoking marijuana are concerned, but not that economic stuff; socialism is not oppression, as far as I am concerned.

I do not make a point of telling people how geeky I am either, in fact many people don't think I am much of a geek at all because I have little interest in things like fantasy novels or tabletop games. But yeah, using such labels as a way to define yourself is kinda silly and I try to stay clear of such behaviour. Think of me what you will, but I am my own person as far as I am concerned.

I don't like them on people at all (on average joes, not counting Hugh Jackman and other stars who've actually worn them nicely). I've only seen a fedora look acceptable on one person, but this person also wears his fedora literally every single day and he has been since for as long as I've known him (since 7th grade) so maybe he actually didn't look good in it at the start, but I've just been so desensitized to it that it doesn't look bad. No, he actually looks ok it in. But everyone else really doesn't.. even the people in the collared dress shirts. They just end up looking like they're trying to be cool and failing miserably at it.

A nice suit and a fedora looks amazing on everyone, I went to a choral event once and there was this sweaty obese phillippino guy in a pinstripe suit and a fedora that looked baller as hell. but even if you're a greek god don't wear one with a graphic tee, that's just trashy.
