So far Kirito just loves to be overprotective of people. And since Asuna is pretty much the definition of a dependent gf, it's probably just natural for him (like how he was with Sachi).

Guess that's just how he rolls, like said before there's no real depth to it.

The thing is... he likes her because she's strong person, someone he can depend on and someone who he could entrust his back to.

Uh...but she's not a strong person..at all (that's a farce she puts on).

She has strong character stats, and is skilled at the game, but as a person she's quite weak hearted (not too different from sachi the previous girl he had a thing for).

Sigh i guess its to be expected since the anime didn't clarify it all that well, but he never had a thing for Sachi the LN described it like this "two cats licking the others wounds" or something like that, they were friends but never more than that. Even Kirito in the novel said it was clear that there was no romantic relationship between them.

Oh well..I just figured since they are willing to sleep in the same bed...and the only name he ever brings up when talk about the black cats is Sachi...so yeah, my bad.

Though funny you could kinda describe Kirito and Asuna's relationship the same way. They seem to be merely licking each others wounds to me.

Its different, they are supporting each other like couples should, the biggest difference tho? is that they can stand alone so they can support each other through their own strength, its way different.

Uh...but she's not a strong person..at all (that's a farce she puts on).

She is the strategic, sub-leader of the strongest guild who earned the title the Flash because of her strength. As Kirito stated in ep. 8, their fast rate of advance toward the top of the castle was due to her effort which he couldn't compare to as a solo player. And, it was Asuna who comforted Kirito during his moments of weakness due to his guilt towards the black cat of the full moon. The reason Kirito formed a party with Asuna to fight at the front lines, after having stopped after the death of his previous guild because of fear, was because Asuna is a strong person who could fight side by side with him.

Having a strong heart means being independent and being able to live for yourself. You'll see in the future that Asuna has neither of these qualities.

Yeah but how does the anime portray it?

Kirito almost dies, Asuna comforts him, Kirito explains his painful past, Asuna comforts him. Kirito is forced to kill someone, Asuna has to comforts him.

Things you would expect but this is how the "romance" in their relationship actually came about. Prior there was no real affection shown (beyond normal friends of course).

It's a very lick wound situation, especially knowing at heart that Asuna can't even live without Kirito.

Asuna had been living by herself and fighting monsters in this game of death for 2 years and became the sub-leader of the strongest guild through her effort and strength! If that's not being independent or "having a strong heart" in your terms, then what is?

Strong heart to me means bravery.

Good that Asuna still shows she's not a pushover when it comes to fighting at least.
I think that she fawns over Kirito a little too much that it is kind of out of character. She's kind of lost the sense of a strong character. Instead of finding the solution or taking the initiative, she cries. Kirito does a lot of the thinking and it seems that Asuna seems to tag along.
Perhaps the change is jarring because some time has passed that the anime did not show us.

Nevertheless, a heartwarming episode.

no....shes acutally strong. she protected him and is the vice commander of the strongest guild in SAO....she probably like 3rd strongest in the entire game....

I don't think the commanders the strongest in the game ^_^ guessing you're putting kirito 2nd.

Asuna in her nightgown <3 and it was great to see her get serious again against those guys. Yui's so adorable too. Nice ep, I liked it a lot.

Pretty much she's a genius (at least in terms of this game) you are correct. And I'm not saying she doesn't have moments of bravery. But like said, she's a weak girl inside. Look how quick she is to cry and how dependent she is on Kirito already. And it only gets worse from here =p

Just about to make a similar comment. By the time the ED starts I feel like it should be B-Part start lol.

At this point in the anime, I feel we know nothing "in depth" about either Asuna or Kirito. Kirito has shared more of his RL self which in truth is very little. We really know nothing of who Asuna is in the real world. So, the sharp contrast between how she has been portrayed publicly and how she acts privately is to be expected. As the show progresses, I would hope we will be presented with information to flesh our the real world Asuna and see how much it differs from her vice commander avatar. The same can be said for Kirito.

Using this episode to say she is "weak" or "dependent" as if it is fact is being a little forward I think. Although I would draw the same conclusion and for all I know (haven't read the LN) that really is "her" in real life, it's too early to tag her with those labels.

Well there are currently 10 novels out and the anime will likely cover 4 of them (2 for SAO, 2 for ALO) so there is plenty of material if they ever choose to make another season, GGO (volume 5 and 6) in particular would be amazing animated :D

but the end was just... WTF?!?

VERY suspenseful way to end this episode

The first half of the episode was somewhat laid back and relaxing, but I'm getting a little tired that anyone with even moderate strength seems to be made out for some kind of EVIL plot aside from Kirito and Asuna. How they always manage to find where trouble is happening is a bit odd as well.

It would be nice to see some more put towards what the game is actually about [beating monsters and getting out alive]. The balance between fighting monsters and dealing with out of the way conflicts between the players [especially when most all the side characters don't appear again or have little to no impact] just hasn't sat well with me.

I'm not only talking about her strength as a player here. While is true that she depends on Kirito at times, but she's generally a strong person, "physically" and mentally. A weak minded girl does not go to the front lines to fight with monsters almost everyday for the sake of saving thousands of people. Even during the Gleam Eyes battle, it was Asuna who attacked first to save the ARMY soldiers, not Kirito nor Klein, knowing she could die. That is the very definition of have a strong heart.

She is a strong person, but she is still a girl on the inside, being emotional and having a weakness of ghost. But those feelings do not say anything about her independency. Humans tend to be both emotional, especially women, and have weaknesses, because they are not perfect machines made by GOD, and there are many out there that are independent. Because we have emotions and weaknesses, there will be times when we must or want to depend on someone.

Asuna aside, Kirito is not that different from Asuna. He too has problems and needed her comforts to overcome his trauma. They depends on each other.

What happens in the future can be discussed in the future. ^.^ This episode shows me that she is having the happiest time of her life. It's very hard for me to believe that she'll have a suicidal mind in the future.

Green attacks Orange, no penalty for Green.

Welcome to America, the land of the not-so-free. We proudly put our young people in jail for engaging in natural human behavior.

So yes, even if Kirito was a day from being 17 and asuna was 17 on said day, it would be illegal where I live.

age of consents are different from country to country, and well Kiri x Asuna situation would be illegal too if it was in my country.

Just skimmed through 12 pages ( 5->17), glad that the flame war didn't escalate and make this thread into a big mess like the previous thread.

To sum up, lots of pp think SAO is plotless, oh well they might be right, cause it's not much of a difference in the novel, where all the time skip happened in the first vol, and in the 2nd vol is where we can see Kirito's progress, side stories present kirito's progress throughout SAO, they aren't simply side stories though.

Don't complain about fishing part, if it was in the anime, it would make pp rage harder, cause they couldn't even stand the lovey dovey atmosphere of the newlywed couple.

Whoever watches this show with the expectation of sword fights is a retard ( As I've said before), romance elements hold a strong position in SAO [along with adventure - not action] (as Kiri x Asuna relationship will lead to the ALO part). Can't deny that their developments happened off-screen all the time, so the anime felt like it was rushed.

Not enough screentime for developments happens with most of the adaptation. If they can't bear with it, they should only watch original anime though.

And for pp who hate this ep, really? they hate Yui that much :(, she was so miserable and cute ...

Oh well the ani fails as an adaptation when it requires viewers to read its origin(LN) to understand the depth in developments. But it's a good ani to watch.

Hmm, they showed a bit of the non violent parts of SAO which I found pleasant, though, I really wonder the significance of Yui to the main story.

Anyway not a bad episode. And until now, I actually had a generally positive opinion of the Liberation Front. I'm not sure where it was explained that they were not so great people.
