I don't know if there's another thread like this, but I'm interested in the topic. (I searched the first ten pages and didn't see anything.)

I've been watching mostly Shounen anime for quite a while now, and the fights can sometimes be very interesting in execution, especially when there's a special circumstance surrounding them.

I'm just wondering what your favorites are, and if you care to say, why?

My favorite by far at this point is Luffy vs Eneru.

If the fight is a spoiler, just hide the circumstances and the participants and post the name of the show and the episode number to make sure it's not spoiled for anyone.

Rock Lee vs Gaara

Sasuke vs Naruto.

Unfortunatley because of the poor quality of animation in anime, fights arn't usually as good as they can be but in the above two intances it was actually pretty good animation.

Luffy vs Lucci

Alot of fights from DBZ

Hawk vs Takamura

Are also pretty good.

The thing I don't like about fights in shows that tend to highlight them is that much of the action feels inconsequential because it's so stretched out. I really like the majority of the fights in Ninja Scroll; quick, stylized, decisive, and in execution they're almost exercises in suspense. I'd like to see more stuff like that.

I've never seen that show, but I think I know what you mean. The longer a fight goes on for, the less important, and in many cases interesting, it seems.
I really like Dragon Ball, but there are so few major enemies that they fight (aside from the Ginyu Force) that they have to make their only trait their strength or resilience because they have to focus on them for so long. If they had a trait like stopping time, dragging the fights on for about 20+ episodes would make things really irritating eventually because it'd just feel pointless and impossible.

It really depends. Stretching a fight can be interesting if it's made dynamic due to the actions and reactions of the contenders (as I believe it's the case with my two examples). Eight episodes of them repeatedly beating each other can be bothering, but eight episodes of them beating each other, falling apart, using tricks, making absurd strategies that might work or not, etc. can be a lot of fun.

You're right, and I like how your avatar sort of accentuates your post.
I'm honestly not sure if there are any shows that have 5+ episodes of characters just punching each other in the face, but the amount of time Dragon Ball drags out each fight makes it sort of feel that way eventually. It'd have been so much better if it was all like the tournaments or the fights inside of Babadi's ship near the end of the show, but with characters who were more fleshed out. The problem I had with the tournaments is that most of the opponents seemed really unimportant.

Nanashi vs Luo Lang (Sword of the Stranger)
the battle between space fortresses (Legend of the Galactic Heroes)
SSJ2 Gohan vs Perfect Cell (Dragon Ball Z)

Fate Zero second season, episode 24

Hunter x Hunter 2011, episode 47

and the last fight in the Gintama movie,
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Hunter x Hunter fights
for:
1) fluid animation
2) great choreography
3) continuous; only talk when talk is needed
4) people die, so the action can result in death; therefore, it's gripping
5) great mind tricks
6) always some sort of psychological warfare going on as well
7) Not horribly censored, especially for a sunday morning anime (oddly enough more violent that most anime in less strict slots, even with 17+ ratings), so it results in the same as #4
8) always different in theme and creative, NEN helps very much in this department.
9) the characters who are involved in the fight are already interesting, giving it some cool points

10) most important for me: Two-sided, and not turn-based, where one hits and the other receives, with role-reversals. It's all about dodging, blocking and hitting.
