Why is it only popular in Japan? I'd love to go to a cosplay cafe one day. Or even work there!

Cause in America, society doesn't care.

/sarcasm

Anime and cosplay isn't as popular over here than it is in Japan. Like the only time people really bother to would be at conventions and hell, maybe even Halloween for the lulz.

People would probably just consider you a weeaboo or a nerd or something along those lines if they saw you wearing a nekomimi maid outfit in a small cafe ending your sentences with "nyaa".

After anime's golden age in the US during the Toonami/early Adult Swim years anime's popularity died down considerably in the United States. Fact. It will probably make some kind of comeback once the world markets become more favorable, but probably never to the point of making cosplay cafes a profitable enterprise in the US.

Also what the guy above me said has a lot of truth too.

Well, there's already a Maid Cafe in California. Royal T. Cafe (Opened in 2007 and is still running today as far as I know), and it's seen some success . Nothing significant mind you, but it just proves that there is a market for such a thing. That being said, Royal T Cafe seems to fail to have any connection to the anime industry aside from being maids, more of a 'Stuff you'd see in Japan' type deal. If one opened up, and appealed to the anime fan in Cali, it might actually have a positive effect on the industry. Maybe not catering to fans exclusively, but even those who are just curious might support the cafe's endeavors. A "Nice place to visit and hang out" would have to be the goal.

C'mon MAL, have a little hope for those of us not in Japan. XD

That risk applies to just about any anime fan who even mentions liking anime.

Lmao, 'weaboo' was created just to segregate portions of the anime base. I love it when people throw that word around, like it makes them better. Ah, elitism. Isn't. It. Wonderful?

Nah make one in New York City. Population of 30 million np np. Even if there was a .01% of otaku who are willing to go to these maid cafes then you have 3000 of us. Considering that the area of New York City is really tiny, I think you would get a lot of patronage here in NYC. <3

Highest chance of a successful business. Best chance of concerts, conventions, and there are two ro three established businesses and warehouses in San Diego to begin with that's centered around Japanese culture. Think of it as 'complementing'. Can't afford to go to Japan? No problem, just go to California instead.

Close, but not quite. New York wouldn't offer the same financial stability. California is the number one spot for imported goods from Japan. It facilitates and it already has an established presence, albeit benign at best.

A little cooperation from other established businesses wouldnt hurt, a team effort of sorts to raise popularity of the anime culture.

You can try other major California cities. Los Angeles has quite a sizable anime following with many good places to open up shop. San Francisco can work too. San Francisco is also a great location. Don't know much about that city though... other than it's pretty fancy compared to other Cali cities.

If you ever visit Las Vegas, there is one there. It's called Anime Ramen. It's new and when I walked past it, there was a maid with purple hair and cat ears serving someone.

So many otakus that I know want to work there and/or visit there often to eat. o_o But honestly... I can't bring myself to go in there. LOL.

I don't really think thats true. I can't speak for the other states, but no one really cares about what another person is into. If anything, they'd be curious about what type of cafe a "Maid Cafe" is lol

Does that social stigma really exist? Doesnt it depend on the people you hang out with?

Its the same here. It has a negative connotation. The social effects of going to one would be devastating for most. Its not why I won't go to one personally, but it would be a big issue for most people. Which is why I said its pretty niche. Most of your customers would be from hardcore animu fans and people who give no fucks.

Mm. I guess that true, then the goal needs to be revised.
In that case, if the "Anime"-ness of the cafe was toned down, and made so that anyone could go there, would that be better?

Well IMO, I think they should get rid of some of the moeness nyan stuff and focus it a little more on maids, I think there could be a compromise. Sort of fancy like look.

Then it'd be like a regular cafe?

I mean... If I can get the same things at Cafe A (a normal cafe), and a cosplay cafe, wouldn't most people just go to Cafe A?

Unless the food there is exceptional, I'd probably only ever go to a cosplay cafe for funsies... but since I'm not a hardcore enough anime fan (nor do I find any pleasure in females serving me LOL... might be different if they were male honestly), then I just have no reason to go. D; that's all.

It is part cultural, part limitations of the participating nation.

First off in Japan, the idea is cool to the guys. In the US most guys might indulge a cafe full of sexy cheerleaders, but they probably just want girls in shorts and skimpy tops that are clearly busty, hence restaurants called Hooters.

In Japan the girls ARE generally cuter (and I don't care if that seems unfair, sorry ladies deal with it). And they seem to be good at looking 16 when they are really 26, which tends to give them a great amount of advantage over a Caucasian girl. So you get a lot of mileage in the whole deal.

Anime is even not mainstream in Japan (regardless of how peculiar that sounds), but at least it is part of their culture, so overly cute girls in cute anime looking outfits serving over priced snacks is not impossible there. Over here, if you want to serve over priced beer, we tend to prefer girls walking around butt naked making out with a metal pole.

Like I said, it is part culture.

I went to a maid cafe at Anime North one year. Can of coke, small slice of hohum cake served by a cute girl in a maid outfit for several bucks, and I was not able to get a picture with just me and her. Had to settle for a group picture that I was not even allowed to take with my camera.

To be honest, I thought it was a dumb way to ditch 5 bucks in the end, but my buddy and I went so we could laugh that we had done it.

I'd rather have been served a REAL lunch menu, with prices you would get in a REAL cafe, served by a girl in a cute outfit, that could permit a picture of me and her at the table in a harmless pose and not be expected to move along in under 5 minutes. Otherwise, I'd rather not bother at all.

Never been to one in Japan, so I can't comment on how they are run there on home turf.

I never go to strip clubs so I can watch average looking bored mature aged women get undressed while I drink a beer that cost me twice what it should for a reason. Frankly it's not worth it.
While not technically anime, currently I am a big fan of Hatsune Miku.
At least I can go see her in concert.

I'd so go for the lolz. I'd take friends that didn't even watch anime because I think it'd be an amusing group experience, also... I couldn't handle going on my own. I may watch anime, but I would be uncomfortable/perturbed having a girl in a neko costume saying ~nya at the end of her sentences serving me if I were alone.

You should know by now that people care way too much about what others think about them. And really, unless the food is exceptional or I have a maid fetish, why would I risk my social status going to a maid cafe?

I've been here and actually thought it was really cute! I went because of the food, though (many people told me to go for food, never actually told me about the nurse/doctor theme).

Buuuut I personally thought the theme was really cute, kinda like how I love 50's restaurant themes! I guess it is westernized because I felt more comfortable going in here than I ever would to a maid cafe.

Yeah where I live is like that. Not even sure if they know what otaku is. But they'd think I have no life. Everywhere is different. I don't tell anyone I love anime and manga. Not that my friends would care. But I don't see why non-anime fans would even care that a cosplay cafe existed. So what if they judge them(people who go or work in the cafe)? It doesn't matter because if you go into a cosplay cafe most of them will be a anime fan. Therefore you're not alone.

Actually going to Japan was a real eye opener when it came to Cosplay cafes. Because they basically don't exist, every single one is a Maid cafe, there are no other actual kinds. After a week of semi-detached searching I found a Lucky Star one outside of Tokyo, but my friend wouldn't cough up for train fare and we never went to one despite me being stoked about the idea before going. And Akihabara bridge was deserted by the cosplayers when I went as well.
